Acer Predator Helios Neo 4060 i9 $1799.40 - Would You Buy It?

Predator Helios Neo 16-inch i9-14900HX/32GB/1TB SSD/RTX4060 8GB Gaming Laptop

Would you consider this laptop at a price of $1799.40?

It will be a general use laptop (occasional gaming, emails, browsing etc), and will be plugged in often enough that I'm not worried with battery life.

Depends what "occasional gaming" means (it doesn't matter how often you game, but what games you play).

Otherwise it looks like massive overkill for your needs. You can get a refurb dell for emails and browsing and buy a console for far less.

    • About once a month or so I meet up with friends and we "lan" and get some dinner. Playing a bunch of shooters (CoD, farcry, battlefield, whatever seems like a good deal on steam really), Diablo, Dota, age of empires, starcraft, etc).
I actually have a PC with a 3070 which I take around to their place but since I'd like to get a laptop for my wife and myself to use around the house, take elsewhere, and she also enjoys playing games with us I thought Id stick to a laptop.

    • And thank you for the reply!

    • Dell refurbs with the same specs are not this price, and they are refurbs. I spent months looking at the refurbs and you'll get something similar, but not with an i9 and not at this price point.

      • The point was to buy something with different specs. A $500 dell refurb with 32GB RAM will handle email and browsing needs. The only concern is gaming, where for $2k a 4070 comes into play for better gaming while still meeting the other needs.

It says 1999 in the ad?

Regardless, I have the 4070 version of this hooked up to two additional 32" monitors and it's a fantastic workhorse. I use it for Adobe suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightbox), 3D modelling in Fusion, CAD work, and some gaming in LoL, Fortnite, etc, and it is awesome. I really like the 16" screen too, though it's not for everyone. For the price, they're a great machine, though a little heavy if you need to move it around a lot. It does have two Thunderbolt ports on the back which is great.

As much as I hate Harvey Norman, it was a warranty replacement and that was the only place Budget would allow me to get a gift card to to replace my old laptop. I can't fault the machine personally. You'll get people tell you there are other options, but for the price it's awesome.

    • The 16" size is something we actually prefer, it being a little larger but with the portability of a laptop. It will mostly be used around the house so weight isn't overly concerning.

I was after something with dedicated graphics so we could game together and I could bring it to the LANs I spoke about in the comment above. A 15-16" screen above FHD and a decent keyboard.
I'm happy to hear it worked out for you, thank you for the reply.

i9 and a 4060 is such a weird combo, even more so for a 'gaming' laptop

If you don't need the CPU grunt, which it sounds like you definitely don't, you're better off finding a more balanced build with at least a 4070. $1,800 for a 4060 is not good value.

    • Without knowing almost anything about CPUs, It did seem that way. The screen resolution, storage, and potential build quality were some of the draws. (I haven't seen this laptop in store).

  • Sounds like you might prefer a mini PC, rather than a laptop. If your plugged in most of the time but for an occasional Lan party. You could build something for much cheaper, more powerful and have the budget for a nice keyboard/mouse and small monitor if needed. It's also not a laptop, so you don't have to deal with it cooking itself to death.

Even a handheld gaming device would work great with a dock, but you might find the performance to be a little underwhelming.
