Gas Connection Ping-Pong between Engie/Red Energy - How Will I Get Billed?

Hi forum members, I moved to a new house in Dec and took advantage of Engie signup offers to move both electricity and gas connection with them. Electricity moved all fine, but Engie informed me that gas connection move was taking time and wait until it was sorted.

Then in Mar, I started getting snail mails from Red energy, which was the previous retailer at the property that we are an unregistered user and should either get a retail connection with them or move to another retailer.
Called Engie up and they confirmed Red have not moved the connection over by doing a final meter read and to contact them to do it.
Again called Red last week and they confirmed I'm not an active user and Engie shouldn't have any problem with taking over billing.

Finally, spoke again to Engie today and they confirmed they've got active billing from Apr onwards. Now my question is how will I get billed for Dec-Apr. Will I get a bill from Red? Or have I inadvertently enjoyed 4 months of free gas supply? Anybody faced this scenario earlier?

Cheers!

    Not me.

What are some scenarios you have faced recently?

Sounds like someone really screwed up somewhere, it shouldn't be that hard to get a meter read. Technically you should pay Red for the gas usage from Dec-Apr if Engie only got the billing rights from April onwards, but I'd raise hell if they charge you too much or they don't have a read from when you moved in.

It depends who's fault it was too. I had a problem where the previous owners didn't cancel their account therefore it couldn't be transferred to me. Once they finally did it, they tried to send me the bill to pay and I told them to get bent, it was their mistake and everyone (including me) had been trying for months to contact them. The bill was in their name so there was nothing they could do about it. That it took them 3 months to start sending the letters makes me wonder if it was a similar case - they should send them straight away. So possibly the old owners paid your bill for a while.

Faced this scenario with AGL electricity. I signed up to cheap rates with Origin when I moved in and AGL refused to let the electricity go to them. A bill was sent to my address for the "householder" to pay and the highest rates available. I called AGL to let them know about their mistake and they asked for all my details so they could create an account for me. I refused and eventually the supplier was switched to Origin. AGL shot themselves in the foot with that costly mistake because I got given free electricity.

You'll get 4 months free gas. I think this is a pretty common scenario. Had the same thing happen to me but it was for a few weeks. In my case, EA (who would be Engie in your case) even stated on the phone that it'd be free. You did well to get months worth.

    • Aha. Let's see if it goes this way. I even asked Engie if they'd backdate the billing from Dec, but they said it can't be done.

I bet this is the source of the problem, Red energy seems to do whatever they can to get out of special meter reads and will try to delay until the usual quarterly read by the gas infrastructure provider.

They are one of the few retailers who will take over the entire quarter when you move to them… Wonder if they will try to bill you the whole current quarter or release it to engie at the end

    • Why do they try to get out of it, don't they just pass on the charge to the user?

Had the same situation, moved into a rental and signed up with AGL. months later Energy Australia started sending letters in the post that we are using their gas with no account.
Called AGL and they said the order had been processed incorrectly and instead of setting the account up as a "Move In" it was processed as just a change in providers.

They sorted it out with Energy Australia and got the final gas meter read done and now finally can see that the service has been transferred across with it showing in the AGL app

I'm with Engie and it appears they won't accept a meter read from the account holder, it has to be from the meter reader. Other providers (eg: AGL) will accept a photo from the account holder.

When I signed-on with Engie the electricity was done within a week. The gas was 2 months.

    • Engie sent a meter reader and charged me for it (well they are paying anyway as it came out of the sign up credit)

remove gas, problem solved and you will be saving a lot.

    • Something we're thinking of, the supply charges are increasing every time!

not everyone wants a useless, woke induction stove

      • I have no issues with my induction stove. Both of us cook a lot. Had gas previously. Maybe you just need to buy a good one?

  • The bill gets sent to the property owner! Wait to hear from them. If you have purchased the house, you will get the bill.
