EOFY Deals on Motorcycles?

Is this such a thing? Has anyone seen motorbike EOFY deals or bought one in this manner?

I guess my question goes deeper than just the above.

I'm conscious EOFY is around the corner, and I have a job starting soon that will be 22km each way, thus I'm looking at different modes of transport.

On the train and bus, it could be from 1hr to 1 hr 30 mins each way (accounting for missing one train and having to wait for the next one). I guess public transport fares being as cheap as they are now in Brissie means the return trip would cost 50c x 4 trips = $2 daily.

On the bike, I'm estimating commute to be about 35 mins Max each way (from previous experience) regardless of traffic.

Petrol @$2.2/L (to account for variations) works out at $5 per day. Ofc there are also purchase cost/rego/servicing/tyres etc.

Car is not listed due to excessive parking costs at trip end.

Which one would you choose and why?

I purchased a motorbike several years ago. I still own it but it is only for weekend activities. I had originally planned to use it for my commute but truth be told it's a pain in the butt. By the time you get your helmet, jacket, boots and gloves on and pack everything into your backpack it gets old quick. Plus how often does the weather change from the time you get into work versus leaving. It can be absolutely belting down outside and you've still gotta chuck your gear on and ride your bike home. Of course it is just as miserable catching public transport in the weather but at least you can take an umbrella..

I've done over 150,000kms of motorcycle commuting - and would never do peak hour/city commuting again. More traffic on the roads, more distracted drivers on their phones, more risk absolutely everywhere. I know this makes me sound old, but since the advent of smart phones and all those apps sending push notifications, the roads are genuinely a more dangerous place.

FWIW, what turned out to be my final motorcycle commute ended with a car turning in front of me - a very low speed t-bone - and me getting a very questionable traffic ticket for the pleasure.

Sorry to hear abput the ticket. I suppose I should mention that used to commute from Oxford to Central London on a Tenere, so I have commuting experience.

      • Thanks - and sorry for venting!

It's good to hear that you have experience commuting; I do too, but won't do it again.

Back to your original question - most of the time the only "real" motorcycle clearances/discounts are provided by the manufacturer at the end of the manufacturing year. The best discounts are found on old MY stock (more commonly, 2+ years old). I'm hesitating to call them a bargain, as usually there's a reason a model has sat on the dealership floor that long.

No Bikies option? This is a thread that would actually warrant it!

You can use the time on the train to do productive things such as shitposting on ozbargain.

All that time saved commuting isn't going to help much if you're ever in an accident

    • That's a perfectly logical point.

    • Just get permanent disability insurance and you many never have to commute or work again.

  • never seen anything crazy tbh. theres usually 5-10% wiggle room but at best you'll probably just get some bundled stuff like riding gear or mostly model being runout before new ones, where they pile addons like a 'trick slip-on exhaust' or 'carbon trim'.

unless you're in the L/P license gilded cage market, where resale value is artificially propped up - if u want a discount, never buy a moto new. they lose 40-50% immediately and a majority of people buy them and barely use them and quickly regret their decision ie. straight onto the used market with not even broken-in kms on them.

    • Thanks for the insight mate.

  • Bikes are struggling to sell atm bit of a worldwide trend. Be paitent and have a look around. The tarrifs are only going to make it worse for manufacturers.

    • +2

If anything, heavier tariff in the US will make manufacturers more keen to sell to us, ergo better pricing.

Whatever/whichever you buy, buy one with at least two exhaust pipes, one on each side, even with 4 pipes two on each side=BMW

Tbh, I think I'm looking for someone to convince me to go with my heart rather than my head.

I've seen and read reviews of the ZX4RR, and I really want one, but my brain cannot comprehend why one would choose the ZX4RR for 15k when the ZX6R can be had for 16.5k.

      • And neither of those bikes are what anyone would consider “commuters”.

        • -1

True, but I'm not looking for a commuter bike, I'm looking for a bike to commute on.

          • -1

@DukeNinja: I'm not looking for a sausage sandwich, I'm looking for sandwich I can sausage???

Doesn't make sense. What is your majority use case for this bike? You are doing mainly commuting? Do you want to do occasional commuting? Do you want something that does commuting AND track days? commuting AND off road riding? commuting AND Uber Eats in your spare time?

You cant put up a post and say "I want to commute to work on a motorcycle" and then get all weird when people suggest commuter bikes or suggest your preference bikes are not going to suit what you are looking to do with it.

You would get over riding a ZX6R/ZX4RR on your daily commute pretty quickly. They dont like traffic. They are hunched over riding position. They are not as stable in slow traffic. They are geared wrong. But, if you are doing 10% commuting and 90% mountain road and track days, it makes sense to get them. if it's 90% commuting and 10% track days, get something else.

Buy the ZX6R and take the bus to work…

      • Plenty of folks choose a sportbike to commute on — you do you.

Mind you, given the state of some roads, a big traily like you had — "adventure tourer" today — might be the go.

  • How much fuel will you actually save vs the extra cost in rego and insurance? And riding gear?

    Moped?
    Electric motorbike?
Second hand nissan leaf? Dont worry about the range if its just commuting.
Pushbike? You can ditch the gym fees. Yes, 22km each way is a fair hike, but might be an alternative to public transport that costs very little. There's always PT if it rains.

Ultimately I dont care what you end up doing, just thinking of other options.

Thanks all for the replies, appreciate it.
@euphemistic I have all the gear, having been riding for over 2 decades.

I have thought about pedal cycling, but I would feel much less safer. And there is the added need to have access to showers, which may not be possible.

      • +1

Pedal cycling 22km for a commute is a pretty big ask and would definitely require showers for an office worker.

My commute is around 8km and takes just under 30min. The 15km alternate route home along 90% cycle paths is about 45min but well worth it for not having to deal with any traffic.

  • In my very limited experience, I’d agree with the others about end of year/plate clearance. Or potentially a new model/upgrade release for the best bargains.
