Hasn't he been doing this for years? All the animal rights 'documentaries' use his music. I can't listen to Memory Gospel without picturing a dog being thrown into a rubbish compactor now.

Been re-released with more tracks and even more liberal use terms

      • even more liberal use terms

I like what you did here

        • Clickbait, perhaps?

  • +6

How right is right. Do you have to check with Moby on his definition or is AI's view ok? Just Curious - not planning to promote anything here. Defining things like how long is any piece of string….

    • +1

"Well, Moby's lawyers, it's still a form Socialism… We think of it as a third position beyond the left-right spectrum."

"You know, our leader was actually a vegetarian!"

    • +3

The terms on his website are fairly unambiguous:
Can I use mobygratis music in political campaigns or advertisements?
No, music from mobygratis cannot be used in advertisements or campaigns supporting right-wing politics or causes.

So the common rule of thumb would be if you think it might not be allowed, then don't use it. Most people have a working moral compass.
However, in an example almost highlighting the opposite, the LNPs media team has been recently caught out copying a popular US vloggers style of presentation, and then blocking him from the official LNP website, so he couldn't see it and formally complain.

      • For a Greens supporter - Labor is right wing, Liberals Extreme Right Wing, Pauline off the chart etc

So where on the spectrum is Moby

        10 is < 20 but > 5

        • +4

I’m a greens voter and I don’t think Labor is right wing. Words have meaning, if someone thinks it’s relative to the individual then they’re simply wrong.

          • @freefall101: Some people's view of Green voters is that everything is right wing compared to them.

          • @freefall101: You're right in a sense, but words don't generally have an objective meaning. A fact is a fact, or should be, but we don't live in a world where even that is a true statement. As dumb as that sounds. The thing the right has been so successful at by creating all their own think tanks which are beholden to money, is you can just invent your own "facts". If everything is up for debate, and nothing is objectively true, you can never make progress.

            • @tuffasaurus: The courts get to decide when it comes to copyright usage though, not the man on the street. It doesn't matter that a whole lot of people have detached themselves from reality, there is a historical meaning here that's clear to most people.

While the US courts might have been stacked in a particular direction, I'm fairly certain none of them would try claim that being anti-abortion isn't a right wing cause. Although who knows with that country these days.

And what is 'funny' about that is that he said he would have been ok with it if they had asked. But they didn't, the LNP just hoped 'not to be caught'.

Not a bargain - there's never been a price on these samples.

    • +10

Free is the definition of a bargain

      • -6

        No………

Cambridge - "something on sale at a lower price than its true value"

Collins - "Something that is a bargain is good value for money, usually because it has been sold at a lower price than normal"

Dictionary.com - "an advantageous purchase, especially one acquired at less than the usual cost:"

        • +8

          First point.

          Bargain.

      • +2

As someone who pays for samples to make music with, reducing the price to zero is quite the bargain

  • Is there a download all button?

    The tolerant left

    • +11

Bit butthurt after last night's result, are we?

      • -2

Translation: you're butthurt I'm calling it as it is

        • Ahh yes, because lefties are well known for talking about how tolerant they are of political ideologies and actions that directly oppose their own principles.

    • +6

I'm pretty far left, no one has said I should or need to be tolerant of dipshits.
If you want to live your life without hurting anyone else, I will defend that to the end. If you think you should be allowed views that restrict other people's happiness and we should just accept that because we're "left", well sir, you are incorrect.

    • +2

      The tolerant left

Unfortunately, the risk that comes with tolerating the right, is that they slip a little further right - and then you end up with a fully racist fascist leadership like Pauline Hanson, Trump Musk, Farage etc. - look how quickly the US moved from a functioning Republican party to Trumpism, it only took a decade and the previous Republican party now exists in name only.

At least if you tolerate the left, and they slip further left, you just end up with the Greens 🤷

Most people sit somewhere near the centre, and one of these two outcomes is distinctly not like the other.

      • -2

None of those people are fascists. I doubt you could accurately describe fascism (which originated from Mussolini and the left) without googling it. And obviously have never heard of people like Mao or the Bolsheviks. Educate yourself before commenting please.

        • So what do you want to characterise them as, if not fascist ?

          Bigots ? Neo-fascists ? Ultra-nationalists ?

I'm fine with any of those terms - pick one, and then tell us what your point is. At the moment it sounds like you're ok with a slide-right as long is it stops at bigot and doesn't reach fascist.

          Educate yourself

I'm highly educated, but thanks for the suggestion.

          • +1

@Nom: Bigot is subjective and meaningless. Fascist is simply wrong, as mentioned. Elements of nationalism apply I guess.

My original point is that treating people with respect even if they don't think exactly the same as oneself is a good thing. But there's a tendency on the left to seek power, control, authority, therefore people like moby cannot tolerate differences of opinion, and view anyone that thinks differently as the enemy. That's not a healthy way to think. Just my opinion.

            • +2

@CaptainJack: They're his own music samples, not life-saving medicine.

He simply doesn't want his name to be associated with anything that he fundamentally disagrees with. It's not that complex.

      Grow up

      • +6

The irony is that this poster is probably as old as Moby was when that track was written about him.

  • +16

Guy is giving away n his samples. Why all the negative comments? Take and enjoy. You hang so many so called influencers trying to sell you trite content with questionable value for money.

    • +3

Exactly. This guy is giving up a life of work for free, so people can use it to be creative. He gains nothing. Why the hate. You don't have to like his music to accept this is a selfless act.

  • -8

Go woke Go broke…Now he has to give away for free his samples to stay relevant….Probably was getting USAID to stay afloat.
Cue the self righteous defenders of Cultural Self immolation by a thousand cuts.

    • +5

Weird take, but ok. You do you.

    • +5

Are you on the wrong site ?
This is OzBargain - it targets the Australian market. We don't have USAID or weird "woke" culture wars in Australia 🤷

    • I'm pretty sure he's doing very well and that's how he's able to give away music for free for the past 2 decades.
