  • Does the nonstick coating on the basket have PFAS and degrade if you put it in the dishwasher?

    • +1

      Probably.

I sorted that problem using silicon baskets and a stainless steel grill stand, so the food doesn't rest on the PFAS.

great idea, i do the same. i also use the silicone mats and paper liners too.

JSYK, that nonstick finish on paper liners are PFAS too 😉

            @wisdomtooth: fml, i can't win. lol
i'll just use the silicone now.

            • @Hugh G Rection: Is the silicon chemically stable under heat though?

              • @happyangus:

Yes, silicone is chemically stable under heat — that’s one of its key advantages. Specifically:

Thermal stability range: Most silicones (especially polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) remain stable from -50°C to around 200–250°C. Some high-temperature formulations can tolerate up to 300°C intermittently.

Chemical structure: Its Si–O backbone is more thermally stable than the C–C backbone of organic polymers, meaning it doesn’t break down as easily when heated.

Oxidation and degradation: While silicone resists heat well, at very high temperatures in air, it can eventually oxidize and form a silica-like residue. In inert atmospheres (e.g. nitrogen), it lasts even longer.

Bottom line: silicone is one of the most heat-resistant flexible materials available, which is why it’s used in things like bakeware, automotive gaskets, and aerospace insulation.

          • @wisdomtooth: Fark - I bought a stack of those thinking I was avoiding the non stick …. probably worse quality than the surface itself

      • Could you please share links to the baskets and stands that you got? TIA!

        • +1

The baskets I bought on clearance from Catch, but Kmart has some for $5.50.

The stands I got from AliEx.

    $76 not bad

  • cue PFAS debate…

though i do wish there was a semi affordable stainless steel option

  • The one you ended up bought, HealthyChoice, the description states

Non-Stick Coating: The cooking basket and grill insert feature a non-stick coating for easy cooking and cleaning

    Is that also PFAS?

Im in the market for air fryer and looking for some healthy option
