PayPal: Can You Add a Bank Card in USD, and Avoid Paying PayPal Exchange Rate?

Hi all

I have been looking on the PayPal website, but I couldn't find a definitive answer. Apology for asking if it is obvious.

I compared the exchange rate between AUD and USD, and PayPal is noticeably more expensive than my bank.

It is possible to add a second card in USD to a PayPal account, and pay directly in USD using it?

Optionally, do you have any recommendation for third parties providing (virtual or not) bank cards in foreign currencies?

Thank you :)

You can set this as a default option for any card or at the checkout. I think they call it "Currency Conversion Options"

I have my HSBC global debit card (which holds a variety of currencies USD AUD SGD JPY HKD EUR)

It's linked to PayPal like any other card but when paying at the checkout you just choose to pay without PayPal conversion - the link will be displayed right before you pay. Nor does PayPal remember the setting, you will have to remember to disable the conversion each time you check out

just link with macq or ing and you get good xchange rate anyway

I don't like paying with PayPal when making international purchase, but I convince myself saying that it's still better than sharing the card info directly.
Some years ago PayPal changed conversion option for per merchant rather than for per payment method. The problem with this is, this conversion is only available for automatic payments, that too, for second payment onwards, and you need to proactively change this conversion every time you start new subscription with new merchant.

In other words, you are always paying it with PayPal conversion rate when it's one time payment or if you forget to change conversion method for automatic payments.

It baffles me when someone negs, but without providing any kind of argument. Let me know if anything I stated above is not correct.

There may be other ways of achieving what OP wants, but not through PayPal directly.

  • Thank you for your answers :)

  • I put Wise virtual card in Paypal. We can have several "bank accounts" from different countries under our name and a lot of other currencies in Wise account. I have Revolut account too.

I have AUD and USD balance in my Wise account. Everytime when I pay for PureVPN purchase (USD) and AliExpress (set to USD), I pay through Paypal. No currency conversion as Wise use my USD balance. For example USD 50 through Paypal, that means USD 50 taken from my Wise USD balance. I can have max 3 virtual cards and get new virtual card numbers if I want to delete or replace the virtual card numbers.

    • Lot of occasions I had issues with virtual cards related to 3D secure authentication. It was more of the hassle than convenience, so I dropped it, YMMV.

      • Which company or card did you use? For online purchases, mostly I use my phone. I think it's rare for me to face 3D secure authentication. If that's the case, I think I just need to open my Wise app in my phone. Not much hassle for me.

  • I have an overseas bank account with a card in USD added to my PayPal and it works perfectly fine. As does my Australian credit card set to USD under "See currency options" during PayPal checkout.

I recommend checking out the wiki page on debit/credit cards without international fees, as it has a good comparison table.
