Dental Pods - Ultrasonic Cleaners

Hi Ozb,

I was wondering if anyone here wears splints/night guards for clenching?

If so, how do you clean your splints?

I was told to use antibacterial handwash and a soft toothbrush.

Once a week I soak my splint in Polident for 5 minutes.

I've been seeing Zimadental pods on my FB feed and was wondering if it's any good? I've read a lot of reviews and not sure - seems pretty mixed.

Thanks guys :)

I use invisalign (already finished) just in the on-going over night maintenance use now - which I believe is similar in idea to clenching splints.

    Look up polident.
Its available on amazon for $3.65 sub and save. I usually buy 3-4 boxes at a time.

I wake up, run a cup of hot-ish water, put 1 tablet in and let my invisalign soak all day till after dinner .
Pour out the solution, soft tooth brush to clean it under fresh water ready to go.

I tried 2 different Amazon ultrasonic cleaners , and the cleaning was sub par compared to the tablets

    • Thanks for the reply, I forgot to mention I use polident retainer/mouthguard cleaner once a week.

I only soak mine for 5 minutes as I'm worried it will dissolve.

Oh really, thanks for letting me know. I haven't purchased any ultrasonic cleaner yet so not sure of its efficiency but online they seem to be the real deal.

      • when i googled clenching teeth splints the product looks very similar to the invisalign (and i suspect all the other random copies) - i would be extremely surprised if it dissolved/ affected the structure/strength of the product, even over time. I assume you would have gone to a provider to get your splints? Maybe ask for their advice.

polident does also come in a 5 minute version - i never bothered to check what the actual difference is (there prob isnt a huge diff).

  • Soak it in dilute white vinegar. The acid prevents any calcium buildup

    • Thanks for the reply, I've heard some people do this but it is dependant on the material. I've heard some people's splint ended up dissolving.

I was thinking the polident tablet and an ultrasonic cleaner should hopefully get rid of calcium buildup more effectively than handwash and a toothbrush.

  • My ortho advised me to clean my plate with toothpaste. I just dip in vinegar for an hour prior to cleaning.

I was advised never to wash it in denture cleaner as apparently it will go black.

This is an old school orthodontic plate with a steel wire with plastic moulding

    • Thanks for the reply :)

  • I used to wear a splint as I was grinding my teeth, I used to just put toothpaste and dip the brush into Plax, and then scrub it

    • Thanks for the reply :)

  • I bought a cheap dental pod from Amazon, which lasted a week before smoking every time I turned it on. I then bought a zima one, which was more expensive but has been flawless for 2 years now

    • Thanks for letting me know :)
