Do You Still Need to Do Car Transfer Form When Selling a Car with Major Mechanical Issues?

Basically the repair is not worthy the costs. Do you still need to do the transfer paper when selling the car?

Model Y with broken washer pump?

    • No it’s the other one, BMW X1 died with blow head casket and TCM faults at the same time. Literally can see the black smoke coming out

The faults happened 1 weeks ago, registration expires today.

    • That's the end result of using SCA windscreen fluid in Muskmobile.

      • BMW is owned by who now?

    • Stop trolling do you really want another bad product review?

If you don't transfer it and it's later back on the road, it's very possible you'll be receiving lots of tickets through the mail

Why wouldn't you do the paperwork?

    • Thanks so paperwork is required even after the registration expires? (Which is today)

      • Er…yes. It's still a car after rego expires

        • Ok cool thanks

        • But if rego expires and you hand back in the plates…how will you get tickets?

    • Why is OP worried about this?
The buyer pays the transfer cost
But in OP's case they can take the plates back to ther motor registry and get a refund and the remaining balance.
Then just sell the car as is for parts. No transfer needed because no plates

You must transfer it out of your name, or youll be on the hook for driving unregistered if someone gets it going.

    • Absolute BS. The driver will get the ticket, not the reg owner. It's possible the reg owner might get a "own unregistered motor vehicle" ticket, but a receipt showing the sale will show ownership lies elsewhere.

Driver in balaclava runs a red light, at excess speed, with unregistered car …. OP's car …. wonder who would get the fine ?

        • If there's no plates on it how can you tell who the owner is?

        • -1

Must be an ANZAC dawn service somewhere

      • Ok. Be on the hook for any offences recorded by cameras then.

  • In Qld you’d need to deregister the car before selling it if you’re not supplying a safety certificate.

    • i thought that's only more so on advertising for sale , not if private cashie type of a deal

      • That’s how it is no matter the sale type, legally.

Do you still need to do the transfer paper when selling the car?

    My understanding is

    • Yes, if the number plates are attached to and sold with the car, then you need to transfer.
    • No, if you take the number plates off the car and return them to the motor registry. You fill out a form, the car registration is cancelled, and you'll have no future liability.

Best to call the motor registry and get correct advice.

    • Yes good idea I will call on Monday and also asking about the return of the plates

    • Best to call the motor registry and get correct advice.

Too hard/lazy, advice from online forum will have to do!

Remove the plates and sell unregistered.
When you sell it, give them a receipt and keep a copy for your records.
Hand the plates back to your local vehicle registry.

    • Can you sell an unregistered car legally? If yes then I will do that

      • You are missing the point entirely.

You can sell a registered car

You can sell an unregistered car

        That wasn't your question

If you sell the car and don't advise the roads authority, they will have you as the last registered owner. That will absolutely haunt you if subsequently the car goes back on the road.

  • No opinion from @SYLTB ?

    • They must have chipped/tuned and abused it heavily, bang & pop up, chat chut etc otherwise a German car would not blow!
Also, see the OP's other posts where she has no idea what she talks about! Lol

        Right…… backs away slowly

  • Sell it unregistered or can sell without a roadworthy by transferring car to their name, but then they have a month to get roadworthy (in victoria)

  • If the engine has a VIN on it and they might sell the engine or use it, you'd think the whole car should be in their name when you sell it?
