Beware NRMA Does Not Send Reminder if Your Green Slip Expires

I thought my green slip expired in May so when I got a reminder email from NRMA in April didn't actually open it. For all May there was no emails so I didn't even think about it. Then I got a letter from ServiceNSW on 9th May saying I hadn't renewed my registration so I quickly checked only to discover the renewal date was April 30th. There was also no text or message from them. So be careful, they will not remind you after the date has passed. I can now understand how mistakes can happen

    Thanks Pam

    • What’s a green slip btw?

      • +4

Also known as CTP for non-NSW folk

      • +2

Compulsory insurance. Back in the day, it was printed on flimsy green paper, and the safety report was on pink paper. People still managed to get them mixed up.

so when I got a reminder email from NRMA in April didn't actually open it.

I found the problem you ignore reminders.

    • -8

      100% correct !
Because OP ignored the reminder that their car registration is expiring as well!

Then I got a letter from ServiceNSW on 9th May saying I hadn't renewed my registration

      They go hand in hand.

If you got a reminder that your registration has expired, then you certainly got a notice some 6 weeks prior to renew!

It goes like this dear OP

1.You get your car registration renewal notice
      2. You go and get quotes for your green slip
      3. You get a car safety inspection
      4. You choose the cheapest green slip and pay it
      5. You pay your car registration renewal before the expiry date!

      And for Ops's information……
Service NSW typically sends registered vehicle owners a paper renewal notice by post six weeks prior to the expiry date. However, delays, address changes, or opting for digital notifications may impact this process

PS The fines for driving an uninsured and unregistered vehicle exceed $1600!
So get your act together OP!!

Thats on you, not NRMA. So selfish of you to use a platform they can't reply to, to air your grudge. I am with NRMA and my Green Slip expires next week. I have had three reminders, including one this morning, so your excuse is null and void. Don't blame others for your own mistake. Pathetic.

Busy posting on a bargain forum?

      • Use OZB search facility as there are allot of posts about people not renewing their rego.

        • +10

I’m getting to the point I am using “I failed to pay my rego” posts as a weekly reminder to check my clocks are all synced up… the two most accurate time pieces known to man, a nuclear clock and the weekly “forgot my rego” post on OzBargain a close second.

          Also… *a lot

      • In the time you made this post and replies, you can now setup a reminder for most of the things you forgot in your phone (be organised).

      • +2

You're essentially saying something that everyone knows. That's a freaking life rule not an NRMA rule. If you ignore something because you're lazy, it's probably going to bite you in the ass.

In your case it wouldn't have mattered how many reminders you were sent. You would have ignored every single one of them.

        Start adulting better.

  • +8

The most important thing is to register for registration reminders through Service NSW. Then you can't renew the rego without a Green Slip so you get 2 reminders in one.

      • +1 for this because it helps justify the value of Service NSW while pointing out… No, I'll leave it at that.

A Pam post with a sort of lucky/happy ending? Unbelievable

    • Will we have to pay extra or is the happy ending included in the basic service?

  • +5

They do send you a reminder. About a month early. Same with rego. In NSW you'll also get a notice saying your rego has expired. Greenslip wont remind you as they just assume youve gone with someone else.

Imagine if there was some kind of app or even physical book that listed every day of the year, perhaps separated by month, where you could input tasks. Such an invention would change the world (for Pam) one day at a time…

I nominate to call it the Pamendar once it finally gets invented.

Someone's running out of ideas for PamFi…regurgitating recent forum posts is a bit pedestrian for such a prolific creator.

  • Add reminder in your calendar = profit?

    • +13

Yes, it was your fault. If you made the booking, the least you could is keep track. Show some responsibility and start to adult.

I understand that people often need reminders about things, but I think that sometimes people have unrealistic expectations of who should provide those reminders.

I am sure a doctor reminds himself he has an appointment and meets his end of the agreement by turning up/making himself available at the agreed time. He does not expect his patient to remind him to do this.

Similarly, you need to create your own system to remind you about agreements you have made so that you can hold up your end of the agreement by doing what you said and turning up on time/doing what you said you would do. This is what grown ups are supposed to do.

If a service provider is providing you with a reminder, it will usually be for financial reasons and not a curtesy or random act of kindness.

If only your phone calendar app allowed you to set multiple reminders on an event, or adding an event to the calendar and reminder apps with different notification times.

No, no, it’s the hospitals fault.

  • +4

Haha… oh Pam, you are the gift that keeps on giving…

Yes, they do send them out, it is literally in their best interest to send them out.
You also get your rego papers sent out to you, so you would 100% know to expect a CTP not long after, or to source one yourself.
You set reminders in your phone or on a sticky note and put it somewhere you can’t miss it.
Lapsed CTP or rego is on the owner not your CTP supplier.

What the title and crux of your post should be is “NRMA sent me a renewal, but I put it aside and promptly forgot about it… how do I go about blaming NRMA for me forgetting?”

  • i literally have the email reminder in my inbox
why would they remind you after the fact its expired?

  • +12

when I got a reminder email from NRMA in April didn't actually open it

    lolwut

    • +7

      And yet, it's still somehow NRMA's fault…

Do you forget your Birthday as well?

  • Saw the post. Made some popcorn for the replies.
Thanks OP for the post and the OZB’s for the LOLs.
Off to find things to blame for my mistakes.

  • +2

Pam, put all your periodic important payments (car reg, car & home insurance, EOFY super contribution, etc) into your calendar, with a common format, naming and colour, and a countdown of reminders (eg 1 month, 2 weeks, 1 week, 3 days). One month to remind you to keep an eye out for the bill, after which you start looking for better options. Two weeks to kick you to settle on what to do. One week to get it paid. 3 days in case you forgot.

PS. What’s a green slip? Can’t we use nationally recognised terms, like CTP, registration, RWC, etc., rather than some localised terminology based on the colour of a paper document that probably no longer even exists?

  • +2

How do you even function in society? Do you even remember to wipe your own bum or do you need a reminder for that as well.

  • It seems everything that you fail to do correctly in your life is someone elses fault, perhaps it is time for some much-needed introspection. Being a constant victim is a choice you seem to be willingly making rather than learning. Once you realise you are the perpetrator rather than the victim perhaps things will improve for you.

  • Try adulting from time to time. Own it. It's not society's job to look after you.

  • +3

I am pretty sure the Green slip expires the same time as your rego, I would think that would of expired too. You cannot renew your rego without paying your green slip first.

  • +1

So, now that you know that NRMA, don't seem to send you reminders, are there any actions that you can take so that you won't miss the deadline again next year?

  • This post can't be for real.. no one can be this clueless and then blame someone else for their (profanity) up.

  • Don't you generally renew your greenslip at the same time you renew your rego?

  • Did you perhaps opt\out or block them?
I searched my emails and can see them over the years, noting the subject is CTP not GreenSlip.

Here is the specific subject of the AUTO renewal I received "Your NSW CTP Green Slip Insurance renewal documents"
Reading the email it has payment options, and I have separate emails for the confirmations.

If you are in NSW, for Rego reminders you can chose between Digital or Paper notifications.

Digital send push notifications to your phone and EMAIL, 6 weeks out, 3 weeks out and then the day after it was due.
If you select paper you get the single paper reminder 6 weeks out.

If you didn't receive either NRMA or Service NSW emails, then check your email provider, spam settings may be too high,

  • How dare you all insult Pam, she is a cornerstone of this forum. I'm with you Pam, companies should send a letter to remind you to check your email for their previously sent reminder!

  • Just thought I would point out,

Pam doesn't seem to be blaming anybody else for what has happened to her. She does seem to have accepted that it was her error that caused her to miss the deadline.

I think that Pam has realised her mistake and is just making others aware so they can avoid making the same mistake as her.
