Media Center PC

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a way to stream all my movies in a directory through a HDMI TV, currently I run Windows Media center on my downstairs through my Xbox and it works perfectly.

I'm looking for a cheap alternative for the upstairs TV, preferably something that will run Windows Media center or an Android alternative that will be able to stream movies from a directory or windows media center.

Thanks in advance!

  • I've heard running a plex server (http://www.plexapp.com/) on your main pc and then using roku boxes as the client works well. They are tiny and reasonable cheap.

Just an example of one here, make sure you look into it a bit more to find out what's best for your needs though.

  • A Raspberry Pi running XBMC using wireless should do the job.

I've found the Pi to be relatively slow and still a bit buggy with the XBMC distributions.

I'm 100% with ryangus. A WDTV Live is the best answer for this IMHO. There's only EVER been 1 movie of mine it would not handle, and a quick re-mux fixed that. It has always played everything I've thrown at it (and it is a LOT) 100%.

If you have a PS3 maybe try streaming from a PS3 Media Server application running on your PC.

PS3 would also stream from Windows Media Server too.

PS3's are sub $200 now and you get a blu-ray player.
