Was $10.50 (11/1), then $9.90 (13/3), now going to down to $9.30 as of tomorrow (13/5) 14/5 as part of the 'lower shelf price' for the immediate future (email says at least 2026).

This is my preferred brand of value 1kg cheese blocks, over the ALDI $9.29, Coles $9.90 & Woolworths Hillview 1kg $10.50, which I rank last.

PS: If you look up the address on these cheese, it's the same address for Saputo Dairy Australia Pty Ltd which also produces Cheer, Devondale, Great Ocean Road, etc.

    • Do you know who makes the Coles one? And/or the Aldi one?

      • +2

I believe Coles are also Saputo Dairy and ALDI might be Bega?

        • Thanks!

        • I think Coles is Bega for both the basic and tasty

If you're really invested, for most Australian dairy products sold in supermarkets (at least for the major brands), they will come from an export-listed establishment.

Look for the "EST: XXXX" (where the XXXX is a number) on the packaging label. Usually it's near the address on the label or as part of the inkjet Used-by/Best-before date code.

Compare that number to this list: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents…

      Profit.

      • Thanks. Coles cheddar is 659 - SAPUTO DAIRY AUSTRALIA PTY LTD

No EST on Woolworths white label block in my fridge though.

Any thoughts on comparison to Coles tasty?

    • Coles Tasty is $13.90. Even if you thought it was better, it's not 50% better!

      • "Will buy any old rubbish as long as it's cheap" - OzBargain FTW

        • So which cheese is the worst in your opinion?

@smartazz104: This while label stuff is even worse than the Hillview(?) rubber from Woolies

          • @smartazz104: The $9.90 Coles Cheddar.
Every time I have to do a spend amount at Coles, I still avoid this cheese, spend it on other items instead, and stop at Woolies on the way back!

I do strongly recommend eating cheddar cheese when it has warmed up to room temperature.
It really does give you a proper profile of the flavour and enjoyment.

In this price bracket, I still value taste.
I am happy with the 1 kg Coles at $13.90 listed maturity/flavour "3".
If Mainland Tasty was anywhere near that bracket, then I would be still buying it.
It isn't and I am not going to go to a mild, bland cheese, no matter how cheap.
Of course prices can and will change and then I may have to look elsewhere.

Many years ago we would buy cheap nameless cheese at the Adelaide Central Market cheese stalls.
I am not sure whether this is still a possible option to consider, but I am putting it out there if people want to consider this option too,
Another option may be to buy cheese direct from cheese making farms or places, but I have not done this in a long time.

    • This stuff is difficult to cut because it's soft and tastes god awful

  • OP, what is your preferred brand of full-cream milk?

  • In other words it will be out of stock.

I bought a block of this recently. the "extra" is untrue imo

  • +3

Yeah, not a fan of this. Plasticky taste. The Coles 1kg home brand one now around $14 is pick of the bunch.

This is not a good cheese. Not even close (as you might expect). Spend a bit more and get something that is fit for purpose.

Any comparison between the Extra Tasty, Light Tasty, and Colby?

    Light Tasty: Protein: 30.2g - - Fat: 22.9g
    Extra Tasty: Protein: 23.4g - - Fat: 24.1g
    Colby: - - - - Protein: 23.9g - - Fat: 32.8g

Far as I can tell they all taste the same, but texture-wise Colby melts stringier due to its higher fat content and Light Tasty is a bit dry and crumbly because of whatever they do to 'boost' its protein content.

So basically comes down to personal choice of 'standard' Extra Tasty cheese or the fat+ or protein+ variants.
