  • Does it include any drinks?

I got excited, I thought this was the good food and wine show

No unfortunately not, you still need to purchase drinks once inside. Typically so you can try many drinks at once you order paddles of 5 taster serves(80ml each) and they cost $12.

Have a look at the FAQ for more info
      https://gabsfestival.com/faq/

      • 80ml pours? Bummer. I stupidly got excited by this two for one offer and bought a ticket for the wife and me.

I should have read all the details. I did see that it was $2.50 for a taster and $12 for a paddle of five beers. But I didn’t realise that the tasters were so small. I hope that the coupons and discounts that come with it will make it worthwhile in the long run.

Oh well, it will be an experience, I guess.

I can see why people would think it's a bit of a rort at normal prices. Other alcohol tasting festivals like pinot palooza and the gin tasting festival recently give you free samples so are much better value alcohol vs spend wise.

GABS is now large enough though that I don't think it's a one to one comparison. The Brisbane one for instance takes up a large chunk of the convention centre hall. You do have other entertainment beyond just the drinking but I also don't think there's anything quite comparable to it. You can go to individual breweries and have tasting paddles too, but more like ~20 beer choices not 120. If you were to transport you and your mates to say 5-6 different breweries to have a somewhat comparable experience I would hazard a guess it would cost more than this ticket. Even still many of the breweries that do attend are interstate.

If you and your mates aren't really into craft beer, for sure this isn't great value bogof or not. But if you were already planning on going with mates this is a welcome saving imo.

Also just on the size, 80ml is small but you also realise that 5x80=400ml or about the size of a schooner for $12. Many craft breweries already charge that much for a schooner their speciality/small batch brews. You also don't want more than 80ml for some of them either … I tried a spaghetti beer just for the heck of it last year and while it was experience I'm glad it wasn't bigger..

I refuse to buy any ticket that offers nothing except the opportunity to buy stuff once I get inside.

    • +5

yep same they rort the exhibitors so much they could make the entry free

    • +1

It's like scams. The idea is people who are willing to pay a ripoff entry fee will also be willing to be pay ripoff prices for random craft beer.

  • +3

I don't get it. What's the entry fee for? Just to have to buy stuff?

  • +5

Wasn't this free for Melb? Went there last month and everything is overpriced

  • $54 to get ripped off? No thanks.

  • Its not really worth it as an event, better off going on a pub crawl.

I was a little excited and thought the GF and I might go. But then realised I'm just paying for the ability to buy drinks.

A bit like Meatstock but at least Meatstock had music and a lot of other events. (Unfortunately shite beer - "Better Beer" isn't - but that's another story….)

    • +2

All I've heard about meatstock is it was $60+ entry fee then $20+ per tiny paper plate of a BBQ sampler, then getting shouted at by Bliss n Eso

      • We went to Sydney (so think the music varies). $70 each to get in and yeah not cheap for the food. Mostly good food though. The music for the whole part was okay and the last band was excellent. Also they had Australia's strongest man/women and my GF and I were surprised to find it fun to watch. Other things as well so wasn't just $70 wasted. Good experience but next year I'll check the beer. Supposed to be craft beer and "Better" definitely isn't. 2 years ago was Pirate Life and that was great.

  • RIPPPER!!!

I was just about to buy tickets this week, just got 6!

Bloody awesome event, I was dubious too without any free drinks but well worth it if you like beer. I’ll go every year for sure

    • That's the spirit!

This event is for the craft beer lovers and I think it's worthwhile since you get many great breweries together in one place. It would have cost heaps more if I were to travel to these breweries one by one. Also these breweries usually have GABS special just for the event. And you can get the drink in taster cup for $3-$5.

People calling it overpriced seems to be clueless/ or just the wrong crowd and probably better off drinking xxxx at home.

      • You can just go the beer Emporium to try the GABS craft beers too, they got tasting platters there

        • Nvm went yesterday and found out they've closed down gg

  • Well done if you held out, now $15 tix until 8am 17/05

  • I managed to grab extra Sydney GAB tickets, selling them $10 each PM me, limited stock
