  • Definition of welder. I make things stick together

  • Genuine question… Why would you buy this at 3x the price of something like this one? - for occasional DIY usage.

Any number of reasons. As a generalisation, the amperage rating on the generic chinese welders is completely fraudulent. 270 Amp is also impossible using a 10A outlet/ wall plug.
You'll also notice no mention of duty cycle rating meaning that it may be able to produce say 100 amps but only for a short period.
Furthermore they often don't weld at the set amperage. Set it to 120 amps and you may only be getting 80-90 which can be a real nuisance.
Lower quality of the fittings, the wire thickness, the circuitry, torches, clamps, electrode holders etc. Some of them don't come close to meeting electrical safety standards making them outright dangerous. Not saying that is the case here, you have to do some research. Vevor are usually at the better end of the generic chinese quality spectrum so do some digging, watch youtube reviews etc.

In this case the Unimig has HF start which means no scratching/ lift starting if you plan to use for TIG though if you're serious about TIG then go with a proper AC/DC unit with pedal. A nice to have nonetheless. The Vevor is unlikely to have gas management and slope settings so forget it for TIG. Pre-flow, Post-flow, up slope, down slope etc.

The Unimig is probably overkill for occasional DIY MIG or stick though a good investment if you want to properly get into welding and develop your skills.

      • Thanks I actually bought that Vevor one after a little bit of research, but I have NFI what is important and what isn't. Its got a 15A plug BTW.

I just wanted to be able to weld a thin SS exhaust using gasless MIG, and it did that admirably.

I have tried TIG before using a proper massive welder. Its bloody hard to do well. But this Vevor using the included gasless MIG was actually really easy to use and produced a serviceable result.
