Smart Lock for Outdoor Back Gate Recommendations

The specification is:

Need pin pad with handle from outside (can be digital - although will need charging - if there is a soln to that all ears).

Easy release handle from inside with ability to have key lock (for the night or when we're away).

Price doesn't matter. Looking for quality and something I won't need to replace.

  • Smart Lock and Outdoor doesnt goes together, need some sun/rain cover.

    • Most smart locks have a degree of water resistance as far as I understand

      • +1

they do but when it goes through the rain and sun, degrade it in no time.

      • "degree of water resistance" =/= outdoor

      • IP ratings for external panel only. Internal one is not.
Anyway I recommend to have covers for both to extend its life.
I have installed Eufy 3in1 in an outdoor gate before with 2 cover boxes and it works well for 1.5 year now

  • What sort of gate lock are you wanting though? Is something like this an option?

Maybe consider a chain with a smart padlock ?

    • Hey that's great, first open seems to be the right one or direction. It's a door that faces onto the alley but we use it frequently. We are changing the door so can pick anything. Chain is too cumbersome.

      • +1

If it is a door, then it provides flexibility. I have a Eufy S231 for my garage door and its great. I have an external garage and was sick of having always remember my keys plus check if it was locked or not.

I bought a cheap amazon one and it stopped working after a while plus was limited to bluetooth only. So I got the Eufy and very happy. Better WiFi, Better App. Doesn't fit in my the rest of my house eco system (Tuya) but I can live with that.

If it were an actual gate, like latch my side gate or back gate, then it could be a bit harder to integrate something "smart".

It'll be a door! Sorry didn't clarify that. Yeah (profanity) the cheap Amazon ones. Don't want to faff around and change it after x years.

          • @jumpingwillow: Yeah, well the cheap amazon worked but I think it got water in it (wasn't waterproof) and then wouldn't charge, went flat and was useless.

I like the Eufy one much better.

    • Damn the SL lock is sold out from that place

      • This on Amazon looks similar to the SL lock.

Don't believe it's double sided. Your first recommendation was on the money - Double-Sided Waterproof Gate Lock. Shame no stock.

  • What about one of those old fashioned push button mechanical ones?

  • +1

Wyze Auto-Lock Bolt is IPX5 rated; you'd use in conjunction with a keyed passage lever set

Thanks looks great, I didn't mention one thing, the fence is jumpable so ideally the inside lock can be dead locked? This looks like anyone on the inside can just turn the lock to open it?

      • +1

I think that's the case; you may need to add a key-locked passage set. There are smart locks that work with deadlatch rim locks (e.g. Lockwood 001) but they're not IPX rated

  • Nothing lasts forever even the mechanical keypad. Smart ones can last 3-7 years but the convenience matters

There are 2 sided locks. Depending on your gate structure (metal frame with timber pailings or all timbers or all metal….), modifications required.
It's better if you can send a picture

    • Hi there, thanks - https://imgur.com/a/jVbkhNF something like that, 50mm thick. Nothing is installed yet. But that's broadly the design. Aluminum wood look fence plus a door which will have frequent use.

    • Starting to think if can't get a decent smart lock, may just go with old school one. The lockwood letter number one is ok but issue obviously is, once you're inside you can just flick it open.

      • There are 2-sided digital gate locks from Locks Galore. It's great

        • I ended up with a manual hinge lock
