Best Steam Rice Rolls in Sydney? (Cheung Fun)

Recently been craving steam rice rolls so i went to get some at Kowloon Cafe in Sydney.

Was delicious but they only have plain and beef brisket I'm trying to find a place that does fried dough and prawn and others.

I will be going after work so unfortunately I can only really go to places that still serve it after 5pm well 6pm and later realistically since I will be travelling from blue mountains after work via train.

So far I have got taste of Shanghai Burwood and Eastwood recommended and Steamup Cantonese Restaurant recommended.

I'll take any other recommendations even if it is only available before 5pm maybe I can get it on the weekends when I'm off work.

Thank you fellow Sydney foodies.

Any yum cha place in the world has it.. I’m sure there’s some in Sydney

    • The problem is not every place does these well. If you are unlucky enough to order some in the first few minutes of the yum cha restaurant opening, you might find it is oddly cold which is a dead giveaway that it is a reheated frozen product…

Most people don't know this evil secret though, because it keeps the costs low.

      • Also I don't know of any yum cha that is open late at night like 6pm onwards

Claypot Kitchen in Macquarie centre or Chatswood Westfield. They do the fried doughnut version and the doughnut is pretty fresh. Feel like the sweet soy sauce could be better though.

They open till late 7:30pm generally and 8:30pm on Thursdays.

    • Any idea if the train line is working over there.. Google maps says you need to take a bus from blacktown but I prefer train

To Macquarie need to use metro. (Down this weekend for maintenance though)

Chatswood you can use a train to get there (not sure about maintenance on this line)

  • Taste of Canton in Zetland is another one

    • Is it still operating.. Google maps says it's closed

  • Cheung Fun is ok…but its no siu mai or har gow as far as the yum cha taste pyramid goes

    • Correct, Cheung fun is a step above the basics.

    • What's the best place to get these

  • Greenwood in North Sydney

Try "Traditional Cantonese Taste Eastwood" shop. It specialises in Cheung Fun. The store in Chinese has the Cheung Fun name in it.

    • This place used to be so good till it changed hands after it got famous in some newspaper articles. The last few times I went it was very disappointing.

  • I am surprised most places do not make these on demand with actual fresh ingredients.

Believe it or not they are mostly frozen and imported, reheated in the trolleys…

Personally, I make my own and use the steamer on top of the rice cooker.
