What's Considered The Best Hoisin Sauce?

So I'm about to try the Cheung fun steamed rice noodle rolls from Amazon now I'm trying to figure out how to make the delicious sauces like peanut sauce and hoisin sauce

Which brand do you guys prefer for the hoisin sauce and the peanut sauce

Or it really doesn't matter they all are very much the same?

Your life is a mad rollercoaster of emotions.

Anyway, make your own. It's worth it. Do a big ol' jar and keep it in the fridge until it smells weird.

I guess you could say I am an alien or in a state of eternal freefall ;)

I am gonna try the cheapest first which just so happens to be the coles brand.. I will probably regret this

  • 'Tung Chun' hoi sin is by far the most popular one in Vietnamese restaurants.

    • how are the resturant ones so runny and lighter than that? always thought they dilute it

  • The one with the boat lady on it.

  • More than particular brands I love a blend of hoisin, soy, and teriyaki. Maybe add a dash of agave / maple / sugar. Experiment with ratios, usually heavier on the hoisin.

  • It’s not peanut sauce it’s usually Chinese sesame paste, that is eaten with cheung fun after you pan fry them a bit. And the you mix with hoisin in whatever ratio you prefer.

I like adding sweet soy sauce (Lee Kum Kee branded one) note this is not kecap manis they are two very different products. You can buy both these condiments in most Asian supermarkets. Lee Kum kee is probably the more standard brand to buy and probably on the pricier side, but less likely to go wrong with that brand.

Make sure to keep a layer of neutral oil on the sesame paste so it doesn’t go rancid.

  • tung tung tung tung tung tung sahur

  • There is no 'best' for everyone.

It is only you, your taste buds and budget.

Store bought or make your own, then chose 'best' for you.

Stop asking for the best of anything…you are an individual…..aren't you?

Btw, Coles one is as good as any others, as most of the time you will not know any better or different - it is used with other flavourings most of the time, not as a stand alone sauce.

  • i usually buy the Tung Chun one but you can't go wrong with Lee Kum Kee either.
