In first with the obligatory "I'm locked out for 24 months" comment.

Cos I am, and we are. :(

  • What are 'eligible purchases'?

    • Everything i guess dont know about gift cards tho

      • Gift cards are fine

You should be fine purchasing gift cards at most merchants (e.g. in-store at Coles or Woolworths). However, purchases of gift cards at a handful of merchants would (according to the terms and conditions) likely not count as eligible purchases. For example:

          • If you purchase a gift card in-store at an Australia Post outlet, it is likely to use MCC 9402 (Postal Services – Government Only), because my past in-store transactions (including but not limited to Post Billpay) have also used MCC 9402, so therefore so it is very likely be an ineligible purchase. It is very likely the Australia Post online store uses the same MCC and therefore count as an ineligible purchase.

          • If you purchase a gift card on Giftz via PayPal, it should use MCC 6012 (Financial Institutions – Merchandise, Services, and Debt Repayment). That is very likely going to be classified by St.George as a cash-equivalent transaction. If you instead directly use a St.George credit card by entering the card details into the checkout or using Apple/Google Pay, it should use MCC 5947 (Gift, Card, Novelty, and Souvenir Shops) and should be fine.

          • If you purchase a gift card on GoodFood.Gift, it likely still uses MCC 6540 (Non-Financial Institutions – Stored Value Card Purchase/Load). That is very likely going to be classified by St.George as a cash-equivalent transaction (and this is something I discuss in more detail here).

The St.George website only lists transactions that are not "eligible purchases":

Eligible purchases do not include interest, fees and charges, cash or ATM cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, gambling transactions, a purchase from or payment to a local, state or federal government or government related agency, BPAY or similar transactions (such as Post Billpay), refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account.

      • The Post Billpay is not eligible? This is rare..
What if I use paypal to pay through Post BillPay?

I honestly have no idea, because I do not know whether St.George actually enforce this (and if so, how they enforce it).

          • If St.George determines a Post Billpay transaction by the reported transaction description, I have no idea whether they only check for the one reported for direct card payments, or also check for the one reported when paying via PayPal.

          • I have no idea how MCCs are assigned to Post Billpay when using PayPal. When I last tested out Post Billpay online nearly two years ago, I was using a card directly on the Post Billpay website and noticed that a car registration notice reported MCC 9399 (Government Services, not elsewhere classified), whereas an Origin Energy bill reported MCC 4900 (Utilities – Electric, Gas, Water, and Sanitary). Other merchants (e.g. Prezzee, Chemist Warehouse, eBay, Giftz) typically report different MCCs when accepting card payments directly vs via PayPal, so there is a good chance that the same applies to Post Billpay online. However, I have never tested Post Billpay online via PayPal, so I have no idea how MCCs behave in that case.

Does St. Georges refund annual fees easily?

    • I had no issue getting a full refund on the card fee after 3 months but YMMV

      • Including the Qantas rewards fee?

        • Just the annual card fee, not the Qantas program fee

      • How did you get a refund? Genuinely curious as I have never tried asking for a refund even after churning through so many CCs.

  • So not locked out if used a Westpac promo? Just the sub-brands?

    • Westpac has a separate cooling off period

These are the terms for the Westpac Altitude Rewards Black credit card

Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 24 months, are not eligible for this offer.

  • I have online account with st george as i used to have their credit card before. Would that be considered as an "existing" customer? I dont have any current product like savings/credit accnts with them, but i can login to that online account still.cheers!

It doesn't specify in the terms if you have to hold a product but I would open a free Complete Freedom transaction account to be on the safe side.

Thanks mate! I just opened that Complete Freedom accnt. Ill wait a few days then apply for this Qantas card. Cheers!

you might even be eligible for the $40 cashback offer, if you haven't held a Complete Freedom account in the last two years.

          • @dorikin: yeah ill try that, thanks. but im still waiting for the card. its almost 2wks now since i applied

  • Good deal. Went to apply and remembered why I didn't do it 12 months ago. Hard for ex members which blocks online applications - might not happen for all but "go into a branch' being only option is a bad start. Almost a red flag after virgin money experience. Still a good deal just more difficult for some.

    • Half retract the above, was in a rage following conversation with 'Margaret' who refused to help. Called back 5min later and next person asked me security Q's and gave me customer access number in under 5mins.

Have to wait until Monday to call up and change my address though hence still frustrating.

  • The 0.75 point rate is a real stinger, as all of my statement periods are under $5k hence eligible for the full 1 point per dollar as per NAB.
