Advice Gaining a Refund from Retailer on Apple AirPods

Hi all, I would like advice (and apologies if this is the wrong section).

I purchased some AirPods from a retailer. On the day receiving them I tried them, and they give me tinnitus (ringing in ears) and ear pain and I just can’t use them.

I messaged them on the day receiving them about this. They keep saying it’s “change of mind” and flat out refused to assist whatsoever.

Is there any advice on how to move forward with this? I normally wouldn’t care but they were $300+.

I mean, is the product faulty or did you just decide they’re not suitable for you post purchase?
Say you buy a car and then decide the seats give you back pain, should they refund you in full and cop a loss?

I don’t know, that’s what I’m trying to get clarity on.

The difference is I can’t really even use the product. The example above you could still use the car or put a pillow on the seat to make it comfortable.

  • they give me tinnitus

Do you normally suffer from tinnitus or were the airpods randomly creating this annoying condition?

    • Not normally. The AirPods give me ringing in the ears though. “Apparently” other people have had the issue as well. I guess I’m just unlucky tbh. I’ve normally used over the ear headphones before with ANC and they didn’t do it like Bose.

As a tinnitus sufferer I'm not sure how Airpods would trigger it, nor how you could prove the Airpods were causing tinnitus or if you actually have tinnitus.

Try calling an Apple Store and ask them how they would deal with it.

    I think you are SOOL

    • Apparently it’s a thing all over the net https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255843380?sortBy=rank I guess I’m just unlucky.

Apple wasn’t the retailer though - I guess I could try.

      • Possibly if you can show Apple will take them back the retailer might do so as well or Apple might give you a credit note as good will.

    • Just curious is it true tinnitus is like constant torture,? Also was it caused by listening too loud music?

      • Mine used to come & go. Now it's a constant high-pitched tone mainly in my right ear. Similar to cicadas in summer.

I believe mine is a combination of working in noisy workshops / with noisy tools and loud music.

Fortunately it doesn't stop my sleep.

        • Thanks must be annoying, what is usual age for onset?

Some Apple products have a 14 day Satisfaction guarantee. Maybe worth checking with Apple if they do it for airpods

In the unlikely event a product is not what you expected, you can return or exchange it with a receipt within 14 days of the date you receive the product from Apple. The product must be in its original condition with all of its included parts, accessories, and packaging and we’ll exchange it or offer a refund based on the payment method.

Not sure if this is only purchased from Apple though, but worth asking?

    • Thanks - Apple is wasn’t the retailer though?

It’s only if it’s purchased through Apple - and the only real reason these days to go direct through Apple tbh since better deals had by gift card discounts or price matching/beat or both

Im sure you know more then one person in your life. Let someone use it and see if its faulty.

  • Put a claim that audio has a ringing noise and you want a refund as they are not acceptable quality to have the ringing sound. Let the retailer figure out it is no the airpods.

Is there an issue with the item?

    No? Change of Mind.

    Yes? Refund.
