[Possible Hack?] Vodafone Free Day

Found a possible hack when purchasing a new Vodafone plan. Purchased the highest plan on the 18th, then noticed my billing cycle resets (and I get billed) on the 19th.

Contacted to cancel 'at the end of my billing cycle' as I only wanted 1 month, they ended up immediately cancelling and no charges at all.

All in all, I had access to 800GB of data (student discount), used ~100GB data to download what I needed to, and paid nothing.

YMMV, use method at your own risk and be prepared to potentially pay the minimum charge (1 months cost).

Vodafone have a 30-day "network guarantee"
    https://www.vodafone.com.au/network

They also run a credit check when you sign up.

    • It didn't even bill at all; didn't claim the network guarantee

My bill cycle started the day AFTER

well, all that mess around, for 1 day free access, with the risk of losing your number.

you really needed that 100GB data? there's WiFi just about anywhere. At work, at home, in most telstra phone booth, it really isn't that appealing.

    • with the risk of losing your number

You wouldn’t port in lol, just a new number to churn some data. They have upwards of 5Gbps in some areas in Melbourne

Wifi usually sucks, ping is better but especially hotel wifi is slow

      • Vodafone's 5G network defo doesnt have upwards of 5gbps, basically anywhere. They don't have NR-DC enabled on their network, and only operate 600mhz of fr2 mmwave in very select areas, which is hard to connect to since it requires an LTE anchor.

https://ausphonetowers.com.au/ to find where you can get 5Gbps

Untick all bands except >3.8Ghz, untick Telstra/Optus

As you said it's very select locations, but possible. The Como Melbourne (hotel) for example I managed 5Gbps on an iPhone 15 (which theoretically maxes at 10Gbps)

For context, the tower is literally next door and supports 4x MIMO 600Mhz

          in Melbourne there's:
          The Como (mall and hotel)
          The MCG
          The Alfred (hospital)
The Royal Melbourne Hospital / The Royal Women's Hospital
          Luna Park
          A random mall in Richmond

The only realistic place you'll comfortably access it is when staying at The Como Melbourne, though there's 5.9Gbps theoretical almost everywhere, which gets you >1Gbps with good signal.

          It requires an LTE anchor

It worked as 5G SA in my experience, but 5G NSA isn't an issue - 4G is lower bands and goes much further than 5G high frequency.

          • @Dyl: The 'capacity' amount is highly unreliable, and talks about the capacity of the antenna, which it often gets wrong. At most you'll be hitting rank 4 for rx, on a 64TR aau. I highly doubt you reached 5gbps on a normal iphone 15, as those do not even have mmwave combos for australia, even on a USA model.

It worked as 5G SA in my experience, but 5G NSA isn't an issue - 4G is lower bands and goes much further than 5G high frequency.

            I think you're refering to n78, not NR-DC (fr1+fr2), so in vodafones case n78A + n258.

            • @Quarter Pounder: It mentioned n258, unsure about the rest ((star)3001#12345#(star) on iPhone to check it)

Speed test on the roof top was just under 5Gbps, though that's with a literal line of sight of the antenna

It says theoretical 24.6Gbps or something for the tower, but I don't think any retail modem supports 4x MIMO DL (it's unrealistic), ~5Gbps absolute maximum with line of site and a 10Gbps+ modem is more real-world maximums

In doors it still managed 1-2Gbps in that location

              • @Dyl: I'm interested - can you share the link of the speedtest. Over 1gbps on vodafone's n78 is unrealistic, on a normal ue too.

                • @Quarter Pounder: n258 not n78

                  • @Dyl: You're dreaming - on a iphone, there are no mmwave combos supported on AU carriers in the carrier profiles.

                  • @Dyl: There is no mmwave combos on iPhone 15 in AU even if you bring an USA model iPhone 15 to AU there is still no mmwave combos in the carrier profiles.

Also, Vodafone AMBR cap only goes up to 3000 anyways so I don't think it's possible to even reach 5 gbps especially they also operate 600mhz of fr2 on mmwave in a very few areas and Vodafone doesn't even have NR-DC.

Oh wow never knew telstra booth has free wifi, what is the wifi pw ?

      • i think it's open, and free for all, doesn't even require Telstra ID.

speed isn't amazing but hey it's free.

        • Haha yeah free is free!

  • I had a 365-day prepaid vodafone and they kept giving me extra data for free during the year, so I didn't manage to use up the whole package. The data continued to work until day 367 even though it "knew" it was expired.

    • This was postpaid, they sent a bill a few days later for $0 for 18May-18May

(I only got it to download some stuff while away from home because hotel internet was slow, asked them to cancel at the end of the billing cycle thinking I’d pay a month, it got cancelled instantly and not charged)

  • This is why nice things simply no longer exist
