GoToGate Cancellation Guarantee Worth It?

Hey,

I need to book a flight and noticed that on gotogate.com they offer something called "Cancellation Guarantee".

Cancellation Guarantee

Cancel up to 24 hours before departure
Get a voucher worth 90% of your flight ticket
Save your trip for later

Save your trip in case something happens

We understand that travel plans can change quickly in these times. That's why our Cancellation Guarantee lets you cancel your trip up to > 24 hours before departure – regardless of reason.

After cancelling your booking you receive a value code worth 90% of the flight ticket price. The code can be used when you book a new > trip on our site and is valid for 12 months.

Does this sound like a good idea? Then keep in mind that the Cancellation Guarantee can only be purchased at the time of booking.

It almost sounds to good to be true for $60 per flight.

I don't imagine I'd need to cancel but I have a chronic illness so the piece of mind for $120 seems worth it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

If you want peace of mind, don't buy flight tickets from dodgy third party travel agents with non-existent customer support.

    • Their 1.1 ⭐ rating is worse than UnitedHealthcare.

    • The problem is if I book directly via the airline (Thai) the price is $50 more which I can stomach but the flexible ticket options they offer are a lot more expensive and the terms suck. (Pay a extra $200 for the ticket then you can cancel for a fee of $300).

Will the "voucher" GoToGate offer be available for regular discount prices on future flights (found through regular searches)?

Or will you need to go through a special process, link, etc. to redeem the voucher where GoToGate offer "special" prices (i.e. inflated prices) for your future voucher flight?

This is also what I was thinking of. There has to be a catch because it is too good to be true.

            @capslock: Take a look at 8.3.2:

The voucher can only be used on our Portal in accordance with the instructions that are received with your voucher. The voucher cannot be combined with other vouchers, with cash refunds or with promotions and cannot be used if entering the Portal via price comparison sites.

cannot be used if entering the Portal via price comparison sites - It seems like you will have to accept their regular portal/site prices, and not their competitive search prices to use the voucher.

      • Yes, but you won't have to deal with Gotogate to make any changes to your flight (and be hit with fees) and your sanity is worth far more than $50 I would've thought.

I had to get a refund processed a couple of years ago by G2G after the airline rescheduled (the fare they offered was several thousand dollars less than going direct, so was worth a punt). Basically, the airline wouldn't refund until they got the word from G2G while G2G wouldn't give them that word until the airline indicated a refund was authorised. A total s***show.

  • Ive booked using dodgy 3rd party travel agents before to save sizable amounts but wouldnt trust them with this.

    Just get travel insurance.

    • I don't think travel insurance exists that lets me cancel for a pre existing condition though.

But they don’t say when the refund will be processed. You could be waiting months or years.

THIS. If you need to cancel and rebook the next day, for example, you need absolute clarity on how long it will take to process this and for you to receive the voucher. There is no value in taking this out if the process is going to take days.

I would recommend asking Gotogate this question before you consider it.

    • Probably issued in a few weeks with a 6-month validity or something ridiculous to ensure you can’t use it easily.

  • How much is a flight for tomorrow when booking direct with the airline, and is there availability?

Sometimes the cheapest last minute flight may actually be cheaper than an in advance flexible fare, and might be a better option for flexibility.

I would never use third party sites to book a flight. It is not worth the hassle.
