Why I Don't Recommend HP Laptops to Friends and Family for Personal Use

Not sure if I missed something and I've always known consumer Dell and HP driver and BIOS long term updates are non existent, but can't seem to even find anything to download now? Lenovo consumer support pages are leagues better.

Was trying to check the latest BIOS update for this laptop I'm repurposing, but man there's not even one support option…really?

yes more of a rant, but this post also serves as negative content related to HP for engines to crawl :)

It's HP. They want you to download their HP Support Assistant to do anything so they can lock it all down whenever they feel like that.

Same crap with having to login to your HP account to scan locally on your own multi-function printer.

    • Thanks, just tried it and found it to be useless as well. Currently factory reset back to 22H2 and it says "You're up to date with software & drivers"

had a "wireless keyboard_filter_01" driver missing and google provided the direct link from HP for another hp laptop and worked a charm, hope it doesn't break when it goes to 23H2

Why do you want to update your BIOS? I've never updated mine and I doubt your friends and family won't either.

      Curious, why wouldn't you?

Software/firmware should be updated to fix issues and vulnerabilities, if they aren't done so automatically.

Some modern branded pre-built computers have software that also push BIOS updates in case you didn't know.

      • What av software is good nowadays?

        • I personally use eset smart security and adblockers like ublock origin but will install avast on computers that are being donated (since its free).

Just advise them not to click and download from random links, Windows 10+ is pretty secure out of the box and it will normally warn you before opening a suspicious file.

Looks like the Laptop is 10 years. As expected and I agree with HP in not supporting it now days.

Definitely end of life already, but I've easily found BIOS updates for 2012 era machines released in 2019. Before giving it a 2nd life to someone else, it should be with the latest updates available.

No reason HP cant, when their machines are similarly priced with other brands

Agree with this - it costs manufacturers next to nothing to keep old documentation and drivers online. There's still plenty of things an old PC can do, even if you can't (or shouldn't) hook it up to the internet anymore.

Actually going around and taking down older support pages is just plain hostility towards keeping old devices alive.

For example, my dad still has a laptop that was released in 2009 - and I can still download the latest drivers for it, over 15 years later!

Probably opening a can of worms here, but as an Apple user, what's a BIOS update? :P

    • +1

It's the basic software that exists on the motherboard to ensure all connected hardware works together. Mac's don't have it as Apple uses custom or very specific hardware configurations. I think Apple uses UEFI but as a user you don't need to worry about it as it's all handled by your macOS updates.

With PC's being much more customizable and not limited to one OS it basically enables the computer to turn on. I wouldn't say there's ever really a need to update the BIOS of a computer for security reasons, it's more that a newer BIOS will support more up to date hardware, so it's more relevant on desktop machines when a new component gets released - ie. the latest AMD CPU's (Ryzen 9000 series) will work on older motherboards with an update.

  • You are a good friend. Agree with recommendation.

  • HP sound like Telstra

  • Also found HP sell a ton of laptops, even midrange worth $2k with dim 250nit screens and its not clear to the average consumer that it's a crap display, plus they have a pretty bumpy past /reputation
