Need a New Laptop - Budget $1500- $2000

Looking at getting a new laptop as i will need to hand back my work one in a few weeks.

I will have a budget of $1500-$2000 for a decent personal/business laptop. I don't want a gaming machine, but something that will last 3-4 years, has good speed, lots of RAM and decent storage, would need a min of 2 USB ports. I know that JB, Good Guys etc are always pushing sales especially now the EOFY sales are kicking off but I don't just want to get a model that has a discount as its being discontinued if you understand.

Any help here would be great

Microsoft Surface Pro is always my go-to. Had 3 generations of them and won't change.

Pair it with a decent Dell dock for home use.

    • harder to recommend with Qualcomm ARM chips. business models are available with intel x86

OP has been on OzBargain for 13 years, so you could be wrong…

        • I'm 12 years now.

Is OP's real name Gina, James, Elon or Tim???

          The plot thickens……….

I have to admit defeat again. ;)

  • We're approaching EOFY so if you aren't in a hurry, you should be seeing some good deals in the next 5 weeks or so. The best deals are typically from the provider (Lenovo, etc.) and on this site as well. Also, if you need extra storage, a number of 16" laptops have an extra M.2 slot which lets you easily add storage capacity to your laptop

Lenovo usually has steep discounts if you purchase on their websites. If you want a business (durable) machine then get a Thinkpad. Otherwise, their consumer range (Ideapad / Yoga) are also solid.

    • There are also junk Thinkpad ranges now, E and L series not as good as T series.
      Lots of businesses buy Ideapads.

  • has good speed, lots of RAM
So a 486 DX4 with 2MB is good if you are from 1995.
So a AMD threadripper and 128GB is good for the next 5 years.

General terms mean nothing when asking for specific help. Indicate what your actual requirments are like Work Processing of a 10 or a 2K doc. Simulation of ABC using a Blender. Transcoding GIF to H265 etc.
I know people who a decent storage is 512GB, but others are 16TB, while mine is 8TB includes slow online storage of files I do not use for extended periods of time.
As for CPU if you are web browsing to 2 sites then a 4 core is okay, but if you are using a hard core spreadsheet with macros and vloookups and graphs then 8 core and then if you are using a cad then XYZ and then if you are a dev then ZY.

As such I recommend going into OW or HN pr BL or JB and see what they can do for you.

That is more like 1991. Even Amstrad units had 4mb of ram in 1991, and those guys were dodgy.

        Sorry missed by 4 years.

        • All good.

I was working for Brashs when they introduced computers.

I am pretty sure it was 1991, I recall at the time, we had Amstrad, Commodore and IBM.

Most of the desktop units had 4mb, except there was an Amstrad XT for $999 with 2 floppies?

I don't think it had a hard drive. Apple later entered into Brashs, and We stocked the Classic and LC series, which I think had 2mb ram
