Comparison of where V10 sits versus the other models

Model Weight (kg) Suction (AW) One-Handed Use Comfort
Dyson V6 2.04 kg 100 AW Excellent – Light and easy
Dyson V8 2.56 kg 115 AW Good – Comfortable for most
Dyson V10 2.68 kg 151 AW Fair – Slightly tiring over time
Dyson V11 2.99 kg 185 AW Moderate – Heavier, not ideal overhead
Dyson V15 3.08 kg 230 AW Challenging – Hefty, better with two hands
    Gen5detect 3.5 kg 262 AW Hard – Best suited for two-handed use

      MVP

That's an okay summary, but I own the v15. It is not challenging at all. It is very easy to use and it's not like I am super strong or anything. There is absolutely no need for two hands, whether it is on carpet or tile floors. I will say that if its a full load and you are using it for an extended period of time, it may be a bit tiring.

The only thing with is that the V15 comes with a trigger instead of a button, so it induces finger fatigue. A trigger lock can solve the problem, but it can be flimsy.

    • +3

      a better comparison v8 onward

I have the gen5detect, never find it hard. My wife that weights only 45kg never finds it hard to handle either, only ever used one hand.

    • +1

      I own V6, V8, Gen5detect.
V6 - it's light but emptying bin is a pain
V8 - Best overall imo. It ticks every box and is very powerful and light weight.
Gen5detect - More suction but not worth the extra weight.

For a guy, the Gen5detect weight is not an issue when doing carpet or tiles.
However, when holding it for a period of time to clean the car, or keyboard, cabinet, etc, you get a sore arm real quick :P
Everyone in my home reaches for the V8 (when presented with two options side by side)

      • V8 or V8 Absolute ? I have thick deep pile carpet and also tiles to vacuum. Lots of ladies hair to be cleaned. Will the extra head unit worth the extra ?

        • Seems like you get "Fluffy™ cleaner head" with Absolute, I find I don't use that at all. Most of the time I just use the "Motorbar™ Cleaner head" since it works on both carpet and tile. Also not a fan of Fluffy since dirt, mud etc will sit on Fluffy head and spread dirt/germs, so it constantly needs to be washed if you want clean floors. The Motorbar has bristles so its MUCH MUCH better at picking up lots of hair.

Also just add that you can't get aftermarket gen5detect batteries, so be prepared to pay $200 for a replacement after 5 years (if using it a few times per week). One of the best things about the V8 is the aftermarket scene, you can get lots of aftermarket batteries for it (around $50). On top of that you can also get Ozito/Ryobi/makita to Dyson V8 battery adapters pretty cheap… This lets me use multiple Ozito batteries to vac my car and when I need to replace the batteries, they are quite cheap. 3x Ozito 4.0mAh for $99. Basically the Dyson V8 with snap on battery adapter has made it another power tool in the house :P

        • Thanks, I am sold now

          • +1

@yht: I would never in good conscience recommend the v8, suction and battery are junk. Anything under v11 is a waste of time and money IMO

  • +1

V8 and v10 are almost identical in weight, that's an odd rating between the two

    • -1

      ChatGPT rated these

      • Okay so it’s made up, thanks for your input.

  • If you're looking for a cheaper alternative to Dyson, what's the go these days?

    • Heard good things about Shark cordless vacuums

    • Yes shark especially with the auto clearing of the collection container attached to the vacumn

Hard rubbish. I picked up 3 Dyson's yesterday…and I dont go looking for them. Just see them taking my daughter to the park.

All of them work 100%. All just had a clog in the bottle neck behind the powerhead, and or the little flap at the opening to the filter.

I give them away to Salvos etc.

I've "Repaired" maybe 20, and the most I have paid in parts is $1.35 (V10 trigger from Ali Express).

PS. I hate Sir Dyson. The batteries in these when "dead" are still 99.9% new. Just the Bms bricks them. If they spent an extra 8 cents making them (Bms resistors) the battery life would be 10 fold.

You can reflash the BMU / balance the cells. It's called "FU Dyson"… Very fitting.

This purposed landfill action is what we SHOULD be putting people in jail for.

Sir Dyson is an environmental douche bag.

  • I've had my Dyson V10 since 2019, one of the best vacuums I've ever owned. Still run well.

    • Agree, I've had V8 since 2015. Brilliant machines.

    • Same here. My wife looked at the newer Dyson's V11 & V15 and said they were too heavy.

      She prefers the V10.

    • 2018 here. Sometime in late 2020 part of the unit that keeps the dust bin from coming off when you open it broke (which meant the dustbin would come off when you opened it to empty it), took it to the service center and they replaced the main part of the vacuum (cyclone body + motor?) for like a fee of $60 or something, also put in a new filter. So basically a new vacuum.

It is still going strong, battery doesn't last as long as it used to but lasts plenty long enough for me to vacuum the entire house and still have charge left over to do other things if need be.

      Great vacuum, worth every penny.

  • +1

I have V10 cyclone and have had to replace the main body twice in 2 years. Support’s great but it takes 5-7 days of disruption in your cleaning also now I’m skeptical as my warranty ends in September.

    • If your issue is with the trigger, we probably had a similar defect

      • Triggers are 2 for $2 on AliExpress.
Takes 30 mins (assuming you have little tinkering skills). If you do…5-10mins.

        • +1

but it shouldn't break to begin with… it's not about having a cheap workaround, within regular operational parameters items should work as intended

          • @FrugalDealSeeker: 100%… The genius of sir Dyson is how he can build the cheapest piece of $hite and sell it for so much….

The guy doesn't even spend 2 cents on screws (plastic catches are the go in Dyson land)…nor does the muppet spend 2c on balance resistors (so the average jo throws perfect batteries in the bin). Id give him a multi billion dollar fine and some jail time to reflect on his knighthood.

Is the absolute worth it over the standard V10 package? is it only the two extra heads that are different?

    • +2

No it's isn't in my opinion.

I bought the absolute thinking the soft motorhead would be superior but it's rubbish. The supplied motorbar with de-tangling veins is fantastic and rarely requires any maintenance to clear hair.

In saying that I did have the motorbar body break last week but that's from my kids constantly jamming it on the charger.

    • If you have timber floors then the extra head is worth it.

    • Yes if you have timber floors , the other head is fine and won't damage the floor but it is way noisier.

  • Is the code only valid for V10 ? I am looking for V8 absolute as it is a good replacement for my dc45

    • +1

They have a box damaged v8 for $369 for ebay plus or $389 without using code: PLUSSS
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/156549945159

Absolute is $499 with code ebay plus:
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/155664663098

I would get the cheap one, 3rd party roller with built in light is better IMO. Can't speak to longevity however:
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/165345485199

I've bought box damaged from Dyson before, it's brand new with full warranty. My box had no damage but wouldn't have minded if it did.

      • Thanks, does anyone knows if the 45 days free trial will apply for ebay purchase or only direct from dyson website ?

        • With Dyson Ebay store it's 30 days money back guarantee, they have it displayed fairly clearly in the terms for each item

      • Whats the difference between red and silver V8 ?

        • Red one is "Origin" which is the bare bones variant - minimal attachments
Silver one is "Absolute" which comes with some extra attachments - soft roller head + hair screw tool
Internally the vacuums are identical, delivering the same performance. The colour scheme is just used to differentiate between the many variants of V8

  • Do any of these have the LED head light?

    • I believe only v12, v15 and gen5 have the green light thingy

  • I have a Dyson V10. On max suction it dies in less than a minute and the battery light flashes. On medium it will run for 20 minutes+.

    • +1

See my comment above re Dyson being an environmental douche bag / criminal.

The cells inside are likely out of balance. You can rebalance them (just keep within 0.3volts)…Sir Di1do Dyson makes it brick itself if outside that range.

BUT..sometimes it's simply hair stuck behind the rollers, clogs in behind the powerhead/ little flap at the start of the filter.

Use the key slot on the side to remove roller and look for hair jams. Hair causes extra load on the battery and will cause it to cut out on high speed.

    • +1

You probably need to wash the filters, especially the long conical one that goes on top of the vacuum.

IMHO Dysons are overrated. Their slogan used to be "The vacuum that doesn't lose suction, not even a little bit", but that's no longer true since they decided to put in HEPA filters, and filters naturally get clogged.

The good thing is their filters are washable, but I find that they get clogged too often for my liking.

  • I had a V10 Absolute and couldn't believe how bad it is. Much prefer the dual roller Ryobi.

  • +1

stopped buying dyson, gets clogged too frequently tangles in the motorhead and some part of it dies after 12 months either the battery or the motor head or the motor itself, had 3-4 of their products in the past, their warranty is great but for something priced this high, you expect better.

    • +1
      • Motors are fantastic… for pulling out and using to light a Webber (and you are paying solely for the motor r&d).

But…as a vac .. useless… Suck up a single leaf, hair ball or shredded paper through that little vac tube and you have a nice zinging POS.

  • Konichiwaa
    Pencil Vac

  • Can anybody share the rules for PLUSSS and SSNOW ? Thinking to join ebay membership for $4.99 a month for buying the damaged box dyson. Not sure if it is worth it to spend $4.99 if either code has same discount.

    • SSNOW for me seems to be $50 off
      PLUSSS $70 off

      • Cheers

  • +1

Why is this a deal? A quick search on ozb had v10 for $100 less, that was a deal

  • My V10 died after 1 year of light use. Dyson had to send me out a replacement main body, but it doesn’t seem very robust. My robovac does most of the cleaning, and the V10 still died.

    • Which would simply be a broken plastic trigger lever…which makes the remaining 99.9% of the functional unit useless.
