New vs Used Medium SUV under $30K

Hi everyone,

I’m in the market for a med SUV with a budget of ~$30K drive-away. Initially, I considered used models like the 2022/23 Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester, and Honda CR-V.

However, I’ve noticed that new models such as the MG HS, Chery Tiggo 7 Pro, Jaecoo J7, and Haval H6 are now available within this price range, offering the advantage of a new car warranty.

I’m prioritizing:
• ANCAP 5-star safety rating
• Value for money over a 5-year/100,000 km period, considering purchase price, running costs, and depreciation
• Reliability and ownership experience (new car warranty ticks this I believe)

Not considering EVs at this stage to keep the upfront costs lower.

Would appreciate insights from current owners or those who’ve compared these models. Any experiences, pros, cons, or things to watch out for?

Thanks in advance!

    I'd go for the new

+1 for the Haval H6 its a fantastic and reliable vehicle. Its reinforced by their 7 year warranty, whereas Hyundai for instance can only back themselves for 5 years.

Is this another forum post pitting new Chinese cars against used, established brands?
i would never buy any of the new cars you have listed.

      Good on you

As a general rule: Never ever buy a brand new car, and brand new laptop/computer.
I would not buy new or used any of them in your list, I would say buy a used German car.
If you are going to buy one of them, the new ones in the list much better than used ones there.

      Down that drink everyone.

Which German motor are you referring to?

I'd always buy a brand new laptop/computer. Being covered under warranty makes it an easy changeover (which can be harder to do if you're not the original owner) and batteries are the worst part, which always degrade over time.

Buying secondhand computer parts you have no idea if they were being powered by a crap PSU or were used in crypto. There's not much reliability to be had out of used.

I would've thought the trusty 15-year-old platform would be right up there for reliability.

Ticks are not representative and only there for visual appeal (except the last one).

Yes, I'm going to be that person. Because it's the most ridiculous tax break there is, and this is ozbargain where we're here to save money.
