Need a Vacuum Cleaner That's Good Quality and Has HEPA Filter - Recommendations?

Hi all,

We've just bought a new home and are getting fresh flooring laid, including engineered timber and medium-pile carpets in the bedroom.

The home is in an area that was previously adjacent to heavy industry, and there is some concern that there is lead and other heavy metals potentially in the roof dust, as well as some dust in the general area. We're looking to remediate this when able (exploring options now), but prevailing advice is that you can keep the home safe by not disturbing the attic space/minimising access, as well as regularly cleaning dust from the home with damp cloth dusting and using a vacuum with a HEPA filter.

While we would prefer a stick vac, my understanding is that these often don't have the suction and performance capability of a cannister vac, so I am very open to recommendations of either type. I think robots are out as they also don't get the depth of cleaning we need to feel confident.

Our budget is up to $1000 or so, but preference would be to keep it sub $600 if possible.

Aside from direct recommendations, do you have any resources of people who do reliable and quality vacuum reviews and recommendations? Especially if they're Aus based?

Many thanks!

Have a Miele C3, and highly rate them. Yes they take bags, but I normally get them when they go on sale or sometimes see people selling them on gumtree

Miele cat dog owner here, Mine is 20 years old and shits all over any stick vacuum I’ve used /own for how well it grabs dirt

      • The thing is the new Mieles are 850 watt (or about 1000w when they are the turbohead versions), because of EU limits that came in a couple of years ago. I am not sure if the new ones are magically able to improve motor etc efficiency to keep up with the old higher powered ones.

Do a lead surface test available from Bunnings and get the soil tested. Best to know what you are facing rather than wonder.

    • Thanks for the advice!
We did have professional testing conducted, and there was confirmed lead/heavy metals in ceiling spaces as well as internally in the home, but we have since refreshed every surface with new paint and flooring, so there shouldn't be any to start with inside the actual home. Soil testing results coming back shortly!

      • Did they provide an idea of levels? There will be some background level just about anywhere in Australia that will be detected. Significant levels are more concerning.

        • All I got on preliminary results is 'above testing baseline' but the full results with actual numbers should hopefully come back with the soil results. Very interested to see!

Recently got a Miele C2 and it seems really good.

  • Go for a ducted system and you won't have to worry about what's blown out the other end.

I'm assuming installing a ducted vac system would blow my budget substantially…

  • No personal experience yet, but the next vacuum cleaner we get is going to be a backpack style on. Currently using a Dyson stick style one but when I need a bigger one it won't be something that I need to drag around constantly like a misbehaving dog on a leash.

I've looked around the forum a bit, and Pullman models seem to be commonly recommended.

    • Agree people seem to like the Pullman. I wonder though if the thing sticking out behind you will tend to bash into shelves etc around the house

It'd be like wearing a backpack in the house. I think you get used to it fast unless someone was a real klutz.

They're the same size as a small day pack. I checked one out the other day- cleaner in the gym was using one. Seems light but well built.
