Recommendation for Heat Pump Dryers

Hello, quick question upgrading my old Fisher & Paykel Heat Pump.

I've been steering towards Bosch but wondering if anyone has had experience with them or perhaps other brands that are better?

Keen to know.

All brands, including Bosch, have a range of premium and cheap versions at different price points and sometimes different manufacturing countries. This is far too open ended a question just naming brands without models, especially with no budget stated.

Even so, every single model of every single product ever made will have a mixture of positive and negative reviews depending on individual experiences. I've always said I'm partial to LG products because I personally have never had an issue with them and they work well. Others haven't had the same experience at all and would never touch them again. YMMV.

Since you want a quick answer, probably can't go wrong with a Miele: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/miele-9kg-heat-pump-dryer-twv…

What advantages does the Miele have over say a train? Which I can also afford

What's wrong with the Fisher & Paykel one? If it works fine and you're going up in size, I'd just go the same thing.

I bought an Esatto one due to budget thinking it might not last long, 4 years later it's still used several times a week (I don't do line drying at all, solely dryer).

  • I have a German made Bosch heat pump, bought 4 years ago and no issues so far. 1 downside is the lack of reverse tumble feature for bed sheets, causing it to bundle into a ball and not dry in the middle. As with anything Bosch, it has to be German made as the brand has different tiers (Serie 2,4,6,8).

I have yet to try to the Esatto heat pump dryers but it's worth giving it a go as its 1/3 the price of a German Bosch.

In my household we have German-made Bosch washing machine, induction cooktop, heat pump dryer, dishwasher. No issues in 4 years ownership so far.

    • interesting i did just get delivered a Bosch series 6 with reverse tumble but it make a noise that does not sound right also the touch panel buttons are a bit sticky

      • That doesnt sound right at all. I have no issues mentioned above.

I have this machine, https://www.bosch-home.com.au/en/mkt-product/exclusives/WTW8…. It seems like its made in Poland, even though the sticker label says Germany.

        • Yeah i bought the model just below this cause it had reverse function, how do you find the bed sheets with this one? still roles into ball?

          • @SpeedAU: Mine still rolls into a ball. However, I dry the sheets separately now with woollen balls and it helps it dry evenly with less tangling.

This is common misconception with Bosch but I can assure you not a bad thing as Bosch at least make their own products and a lot of their own parts.
All the Bosch Heat Pump Dryers are manufactured in Poland, your Induction Cooktop will be manufactured in Spain and if the dishwasher is Series 6 or 8 it is German.

          All Heat Pumps - Poland
Induction Cooktops - Spain - B/S/H ( Bosch ) actually manufacture their own induction elements which is why they assemble in Spain.
Other brands outsource their inductors commonly from a French company called Brandt and then charge a premium for their brand name and just assemble the cooktop in Germany, Italy etc. so not actually giving you better quality or performance.
Dishwashers - Series 2/4 Turkey, Series 6/8 Germany.

With the key aspect being these are all Bosch factories.

@Retailing: Yep good pick up. I just checked my appliances again and country of origin does vary.

Bosch serie 8 front load washing machine - Made in Germany
Bosch serie 6 dishwasher- Made in Germany
Bosch serie 8 induction cooktop- Made in Spain
Bosch serie 8 heat pump dryer- Made in Poland

  • We got the Beko - BDP710W, it's been great, paid $831 for it nearly 3 years ago, it's cheaper now, unlike most things.

  • I have sold and owned a few major brands and I would recommend the Bosch Heat Pumps.

Bosch manufacture their Heat Pump Dryers in their factory in Poland, they are also created the option of a Self Cleaning Condenser.

With the current Bosch range, any top end model of Heat Pump Dryer that has a model starting with WQG235 means you get the Self Cleaning Condenser and the Reverse Tumble function on the Bed Sheets setting.
The most common model sold would be the WQG235D8AU as it matches the German washing machines in Series 8 and looks to be on sale with Appliances Online at $1,553 or most physical retailers are advertising $1,699 in which The Good Guys website automatically beats the price by $10.

    • I have a 10kg Fisher & Paykal washer, so I was thinking to get at least a 9kg dryer, but obviously not stuff it full.

Should I be looking at going for the 8kg model as you suggested, or the 9kg one I've been looking at? https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/product/bosch-9kg-series…

They all say made in Poland and series 8 so I'm a bit confused! Any recommendations are appreciated!

      • You will be fine either way as the drum is actually the same in both being 112L. Manufactures often do this as it saves manufacturing cost and are just programming their dryers to run a certain way and more often it is actually brands trying to achieve a higher star energy rating.

The Series for the Bosch Heat Pump Dryers has more to do with matching the look of the washing machine and you then pay for additional features such as an Auto Cleaning Condenser and Reverse Tumble.

The model you have linked ( WQG24201AU ) is one of the better options for price to function and has nice touches like interior lighting in the drum.

What you are paying more for with the next models up which within Series 8 is ( WQG235D8AU ) is the better motor "Eco Silence Drive" which is a brush-less motor that spins using magnets, this means it is more reliable and is what helps make it more efficient and is the type of motor they use on all of their washing machines.
You also have the Auto Cleaning Condenser which is technology Bosch created, it uses the water from your garments that is stored in the top left tank and uses it to rinse/flush the condenser/fins at the bottom left so that you do not have to frequently clean/wash a 2nd sponge filter as you would have to do with the lower models and majority of brands on the market. There is also the Reverse Tumble function which is on the Bed Sheets setting as it is always the bulky items and sheets in any brand of Heat Pump Dryer that have difficulty with these items tangling in a ball and the reverse tumble helps with this.

    • They are also created the option of a Self Cleaning Condenser.

And a cursory google search would reveal the steaming hot mess that self cleaning business has been.

      • Sold them for years and have owned this system myself.

The rare occasion where someone has had an issue, it is obvious from photos provided or the service agent report confirms it that the filters in the door have not been maintained regularly as with all heat pumps you are supposed to clean them after every use of lint build up.

The other factor is with Bosch you can actually run a "Appliance Care" program to clean the system manually as you would be recommended to do with a washing machine for example with a maintenance / drum clean cycle.

Self Cleaning Condenser is also something other brands have copied like L.G.
The L.G version is laughable as you need to frequently drain a hose that is tucked under the front of the dryer because they can't get all the water back up to the tank, it even says in the manual if you don't do it frequently it will make your clothes smell from the stagnant water..

        • It's not that rare, and its why competitors (like Miele) put a giant foam filter in front of that condensor, and give you access to it, despite the same pre-filters.

Again, a cursory google search will reveal many, many people that have had issues with it. Many many stories of replacement, and should you need to do a deeper clean you're talking about cutting out panels and installing 3rd party hatches (an entire industry that wouldn't exist if there wasn't a problem with this kind of feature). Or several hours of more thorough breakdown and backflushing.

          • @Ademos: That is overseas and on older gen models… has nothing to do with the models sold here in Australia.

            • @Retailing: Nobody is making a unique hardware model for our tiny market, and the newer gen hasn't been around long enough to prove it doesn't suffer the same issues. Some of the most scathing reviews of the system are on the australian productreview site. There is nothing to indicate it's different, no marketing, press release, notes, nothing that says "this is changed".

              In short, sorry, but no.

              • @Ademos: You are talking about people cutting panels and installing 3rd party hatches, I have seen this on youtube for example and as I previously mentioned is from an older generation and also from the UK/Ireland market which the self cleaning section was different from the models we have ever had here.
There doesn't need to be a marketing or press release? That is laughable as brands don't give you adverts on the small updates, even the automatic dosing (iDos) has been updated but you aren't going to see a press release about it haha
The people who actually sell the product would be given this knowledge or if you actually did a bit more research you can actually see the difference from the previous WTX range to the new WQG.
So in short, look harder? look at the actual product being sold here? Or better yet just buy the model down in the range if you want a manual filter to clean?

                • @Retailing: I think I'll listen to the 400 Australians on the internet that have had issues, over the one salesperson on ozbargain that claims they didn't, and keeps insisting we get magical Australian models.

                  • @Ademos: You’re not reading what I said.
Not saying they haven’t had issues as every brand has faults but what I said is the issues I come across are from misuse / lack of maintenance rather than an actual fault with the system.
And no it’s not magical it’s called reality, but you have no clue as you are using google to look at older generation models where the system was sealed and were not even introduced to our market.
Been in the industry of over 15 years so deal with it first hand and not just spreading misinformation or needing a press release to come out, the information is there but you don’t know what you are talking about or looking for.

                    • -1

@Retailing: Blame the user for a shit design. Yep, you're a classic retail stooge. Thanks, but I'll buy a brand where I don't have to be forensically, anally retentive whilst retrieving lint from the primary filter.

The new system is sealed. It has no access, unless you cut it. It still has no final stage filter, like better brands, who had heat pump dryers out well before them.

I'm done with you. No futher replies will be seen.

Here's a better option No running costs at all since it's power by free and abundant energy from nuclear fusion. Also doubles as children's play equipment.

    • Those are only good for Goon of Fortune. Useless in winter and most of the year.
