Need better wifi to play remotely or no solution in Australia

      • my steam deck does run ps5 remote as well. :D but i install all playstation games I have on steam locally so I don't have to stream it :D

    • +1

Lmao do you really? As if you need PS+

    • +11

I don't think you need the PS+ membership to use the portal but if the game itself requires PS+ membership (i.e. most if not all multiplayer games) then you'll still need PS+.

Excerpt from the PS site below :)

Is a PlayStation Plus membership required to use PlayStation Portal™ Remote Player and PlayStation® Remote Play?

No, using PlayStation Portal™ Remote Player and PlayStation® Remote Play does not require a PlayStation Plus membership2. If you are using Remote Play to play a game that requires a PS Plus membership to access multiplayer, then you would need to have an active membership to access that game’s multiplayer features.

PS+ cloud gaming isn’t even available in Australia because they don’t have the infrastructure here.
So you WILL need a PS5 to use this.

    • I have a Portal and it works just fine without PS+

  • +15

Using perk code bring it down to 260 at JB
You can always find these at or below 200 on marketplace though.

  • +1

Thanks got one for 260. A second hand with box is 255 at CEX so I think this is a bargain.

The coupon is 10% coupon by the way. The 20% coupon I tried did not work.

  • +1

Love mine. PS+ isn't mandatory but you'll definitely need a wired ethernet connection to your PS5.

    • +1

Just joining the choir to say I love my Portal too!
Because of the floorplan, I needed to setup an additional Access Point for a smoother connection even though PS5 is wired.

  • +2

I have just returned from the states today and my cousin had a portal which I really liked.

I ended up getting one at best buy, open box for $185 AUD

I think both my sons and I will get good use out of it.

As others have said, definitely need an ethernet connection to your PS5 but I am impressed with the performance and utility.

I definitely wouldn’t play fast paced online multiplayer games on it but for single player it’s perfect.

  • Yeah are these things hack able again? Something about firmware 2.05 and below had an exploit?

Screen and controls look great, fair price now, but for those without PS+ or a PS5 already, I would only want this if I could use it for emulation…

  • I am new to this.. i might consider it for offline use while away.. do i need to buy games separately or i can download games i have already purchased on ps5 and play them offline?

    • +7

it is basiclly streaming your ps5, you ps5 needs to be wired and on, you portal needs to have fast and stable wifi all the time.

      • +1

        Cheers

      • PS5 doesn’t need to be wired, and only on standby. Will wake up on its own.

        • +2

wired to get better result. of course wifi will work

          • +1

@ce5himm: Wired always wise if possible, but my ps5 wired or wifi, same result - solid with no noticeable lag unless really needing every drop in online COD or something.

    • +1

Sir, this is a cloud gaming device.

  • +1

Love mine. Some claim wifi issues, but if your wifi is good, it’s literally a ps5 in your hands.

    • how do i know my wiif is good or not before buying this

      • +2

Download the free remote app onto your phone, tablet or laptop. If it works fine there, it’s good to go.

      • +1

I did exactly what @muzzakus said. I downloaded the free playstation remote play app on a few devices I have at home and it felt okay. My PS5 is connected to the router via a physical cable though

    • Last I read the connection is not direct to the PlayStation remote. The game first go from your PlayStation then to Sony server and finally to the remote. Wifi is least of the problem.

      • Incorrect, the signing in and authentication is performed by Sony servers. From there the stream is peer to peer. In a lan, no Internet traffic, on wan obviously it goes via the internet.

If double Nat or some other unusual internet setup, establishing a connection may be troublesome.

Can you still not connect BT headphones that aren’t PS brand?

    • +4

Correct, that is a scummy move. Understanding BT sound is laggy so some could be disappointed, but let people decide.

  • +2

Some may wonder why get this when you can get it free on your phone. But as usual the accessibility of pickup and go is invaluable and the fact the full fat controller is part of it.

It’s actually a controller with a nice big screen if you think of it that way.

  • Darn, really want the black colour

    • On investigation, black shows scratches more. I also found the buttons harder to discern but not sure that's an issue in real life
Whereas white the lights are harder to see (again not sure that it's a real life issue) and presumably the dirt is very visible.

I voted scratches were the worst issue so now I'm thinking white.

  • Thanks. I checked for this when the perks coupons were sent and it was full price. If you didn't post it I wouldn't have known.

  • Now, which router? Mine is ancient and not going to cut it.

10% doesn't work on the be92u for some reason. Fuming!

Anyway I'm thinking 4x4 on 5ghz will be better than 2x2 5ghz with 2x2 6ghz as I'm mostly concerned with portal and quest which can't do 6ghz.

Flint 2? I know flint 3 is about to come out but again, it's sacrificing 5ghz for 6ghz…

  • How does this play from a hotel room? Worth getting?

  • Wii U FTW!

  • I love this thing but you need really good internet to get the most out of it.

Barely get use out of mine because we have too many people living here using the internet at once and the gameplay gets all choppy and laggy

  • Good luck playing Expedition 33 on the remote.

  • Another option for remote play at home if you have an iPad or similar, connect the dualsense to it with Bluetooth and use the remote play app. Bigger screen, original controller.
