I was interested in getting this headlamp I posted previously hasn't gone on sale again recently, and didn't want to spend too much so looked at the next price level up. found both of these which seem to use a large battery to keep the bright LED powered for longer (some expensive alternatives that get bright have terrible battery life because of a small battery).

the H05B claiming 1200lm was posted for $23.39 but I think for a few dollars more the one in this deal is an updated model because it claims 1600lm brightness.
also comments in that deal suggest this is not actually a Sofirn product, but a rebranded Boruit model sold on Aliexpress. I also read the updated models have "glass on the lens and slightly higher output".

would be nice to see some battery life specs but they don't give any. 💁‍♀️

so what's the difference between the 05B and the 35R? I don't know, the 05B gets brighter that's all I can see otherwise they are identical.
both come with strap, both charge with USB-C hidden and waterproofed by unscrewing.
also don't expect these headlamps to do the maximum claimed for very long. they usually can't keep it for more than a few seconds, better to use one brightness lower, it won't suddenly get darker and you will get better battery life as well.

also interested to hear if anyone who has one of these and what they think about it.

  • Is this better than the $45 wuben that got posted earlier?

    • +1

ok sorry thought the post was deleted but by earlier you mean a week ago, this one $45.

seems to use the same size battery. but just by looking at what the Wuben looks like, seems to be just 1 LED and a small round lens like a small normal torch. I would expect it to light up a narrow area like a circle, compared to the Sofirn with 3 white LED's and not circular lens.
I prefer if it lights up a wider area, if I'm using it in the dark I want to see infront and left and right a bit, not just a circle infront. I guess it depends what you need I hear if it lights up a small circle in front the light actually appears brighter (at same brightness) than if it was a wide area of light, so it appears to reach further, you can shine the small circle of light like 50m down a path and actually have a chance of seeing that far.

here I just found one version of Sofirn which is more like for like to the Wuben you asked about.

Sofirn D25LR $27.19 with promo code

      • Spotty vs floody are the terms I think you're looking for ;)

        • yeah I just know one (spot) allows you to see far, but limited circle of light. flood allows you to see everything, but because all that wide light bounces back at you it's more difficult to see far.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: yep (i call it spotty, prob referred to as throwy in reviews) I've blasted myself indoors with lights on full brightness bouncing back at me, difficult to see far or near :)

            • @bamzero: yeah spot and flood is more relatable. because I've definitely heard "spot light" and "flood light" before. usually referring to outside house lights.

No strobe, SOS or beacon modes on the H35R (this is a pro in my opinion!)

ok thank you. so one difference I did not know between them.

don't quote me on this I can't find the source after my rush of research. but I think I read somewhere that getting to red light is easier on the H35R. in other words you don't have to cycle and turn on White light first. would be helpful if anyone who has it can confirm.

ok found it in the pictures here:

also just converted the weight from oz. H35R is lighter, 79grams. H05B is 89grams. honestly I thought 80grams is lightweight but H35R being 10g lighter might feel different on your head.

      • Thanks - going to return my H05B for the H35R as I use red a lot and I hate having to toggle through them, and the white flash before you get to red is pretty annoying for those around you.

      • H35R sounds pretty good, bright red with direct access. I like the operation of my Nitecore HC90's slider, slide to left for variable brightness of white light or notch to the right for red, green or blue but I use the red a fair bit while camping and that part isn't very bright.

Wouldn't happen to know if you can isolate the battery with a turn of the cap on this one?

          bright red with direct access.

yeah red is brighter than I have seen on one other cheap headlamp. but white is also brighter so. 💁‍♀️ but there are only 2 red LED and there are 3 white LED so naturally I assume white gets brighter.

Wouldn't happen to know if you can isolate the battery with a turn of the cap on this one?

yes it says that in the short user manual. can turn battery cap loose to keep battery charge. hopefully it's just recommending this for long times of not using it. I read some feedback online about Sofirn HS10 which apparently parasitic drains the battery in 2-4 weeks, with comments saying turning the cap can prevent it.

someone left a mad 1 star review. upset that "there is no charging por!" but there is it's hidden you have to twist one side to reveal it.
they probably didn't read the user manual. there is always one isn't there. 😂

  • would be nice to see some battery life specs but they don't give any.

    I'm guessing it's got a 18650 inside?

    • yes. same with the Wuben one comment at the top mentions.

from review "rechargeable battery is a 18650 that can be swapped out with another one that is already charged".

    • Can confirm 18650, as I kept unscrewing the wrong end to charge it.

  • When I got mine it didn't have a battery. Sofirn did send one out without hassle. Great torch too, lasts for ages. I use it alot when working on the car or walking the dog at night.

    • sounds like someone pulled a dodgy and yoinked it. (buy, remove battery and free return for bs reason because fulfilled by amazon)

      • hmm never thought of that.

  • Which model would be good for fishing?

    • +1

      Hannah Barron does ok.

      • Yes , her bikini tops get a hell of a workout.
Don't know how she manages to use a compound bow without giving herself an injury, but looks awesome doing it.

    • I got the H35R just based on the amazon page's 2024 release model info. "Date First Available 27 November 2024"

H05B says "Date First Available 2 December 2023" but that could be for the original version. I think they have updated stock now which is now 1600lm vs 1200lm of the old one and the newer versions are meant to have a layer of glass on the lens.

  • Graet headlamps I own all versions of the D/H series and some I have doubles off.

  • I got the H35R delivered. first thing I noticed is user manual says 79g without battery. amazon page says H05B is 118g with battery (because 89g without) so I assume H35R with battery is 108g. this didn't matter in the end though you barely feel it when you put it on. the strap was sized well out of the box didn't need to adjust it and there is a thin piece of foam on the back of the actual light, making it very comfy and weightless. happy. 😀

ok next read the user manual. it told me there is a round piece of plastic inside you have to remove before plugging it into charge. it also tells you the correct way the battery goes in just incase you get confused, head first which I thought is how it should be.

just my mini review as a normie. click once from off for white light, hold for red works well. I cycled through the brightness (5 levels) and yes it remembers what you were last using after you turn it off. great so it doesn't turn on too dark and it doesn't blind you by turning on at maximum.

I tapped on the front of the lens with my nail, makes the sound of glass to me. it's more high pitch than plastic. USB-C hidden under opposite screw cap, nice. (ok just realised I forgot to screw it back closed 🙇‍♀️ maybe I prefer a rubber cover)

I compared it side by side with this Osram LED mini torch I got from amazon years ago. the H35R is a tiny bit warmer in white. I didn't notice at first but I can tell side by side the Osram torch is slightly more pure white, which I always liked. but no big difference at all. and it's not darker at all either, a friend has a very warm torch and it makes it look darker at the same brightness (maybe this is why Sofirn says H35R is 1500lm [neutral], and H05B is 1600lm [white?], for marketing purpose). yes warm is slightly easier on the eyes like they said but I prefer the pure white light because it appears brighter (also warm makes you sleepy, pure white makes you feel more awake). ( - ok I think I found the correct term the H35R is neutral, and the Osram is Pure white)

is the H35R magnetic like my Osram torch? no it's not. oh well didn't claim to be I was just wanting to be surprised.

the light of the H35R is indeed wider than my Osram torch. but still not as wide as I expected it to be, but I was expecting wideness like my friends $18 Blukar which I tried at night and it was really wide, I mean it lights up to the edges of your vision almost. but at the same time because the Blukar lit up everything evenly, it meant even on maximum outdoors it could feel a little not bright enough sometimes.
I think the H35R wanted to reach a balance, so has a big concentrated spot in the middle (probably thanks to 3 LED's in a A shape), then it fades out a bit on the edges.

H35R brightess? it gets pretty bright. I won't be using it on maximum. 1/5 is like barely on, useless might as well use red light. 2/5 is nice but the fading at the sides is more than 3/5. 3/5 is perfect, it appears a lot wider and the big spot in the middle is more balanced with the sides. 4/5 maybe if I need that extra brightness. 5/5 too bright for me imo.

I don't know what else to say other than I would like to see what kind of battery life I get with 3/5 which is the minimum I will be using it on. I did a quick search and read that the Sofirn HS10 has some kind of parasitic battery drain issue. if you leave it for 2-4 weeks and go to use it, it's dead. hopefully not the case with this one I guess I will see. user manual says you can slightly unscrew the battery cap to keep battery charged (a bit concerning I don't want to have to remember to do this - it could unscrew and fall off if someone picks it up, and it ruins the waterproofing). oh and the red light is brighter than the Blukar, but so if the white light. 💁‍♀️

    • Giving the H35R a go but unfortunately no next day for me, who knows if I'll get it by next week

Whats the mAh of the included battery? Also you usually dont have to unscrew the cap very much to break the circuit. Just leave the torch on and give it a turn to see how much it needs, more than likely its still firmly attached and unlikely past the o-ring so shouldnt affect waterproofing. Like you say, hopefully not necessary anyway, especially if using regularly. I do it out of habit but dont use all the time so rather it be disconnected.

      • battery says 18650 3000mAh.

and I think you are right about the unscrewing the cap. because when I put the battery in, and screwed it on. at the very last turn, the headlamp flashes once (saying yes power). so most likely only need 1.5 turns to cut the power and prevent any parasitic drain.
