NZ South Island - Camper Van Company Recs

My partner and I are planning a trip to south island of NZ later in the year and have been interested in booking a camper to save some money and make our locations a bit more flexible. Unfortunately, the ProductReview and TrustPilot scores for the big providers (THL/Maui/Jucy/Britz) are very concerning.

Does anyone know of any other reputable camper hire companies that we should be looking into? Or does anyone have recent positive experiences with the aforementioned companies? We would want a fairly comfortable, self-contained (and certified) camper that was reliable. Or are we just going to be better off getting a car and going the traditional hotel/AirBNB route?

It's a few years ago, but we used Wilderness Motorhomes. They gave us a brand new European motorhome. Not cheap, but it was one of the best holiday experiences we've ever had. Starting at Christchurch and going clockwise, we did half a lap of the South Island over two weeks, nice and slowly. I can't wait to go back and finish the lap.

That's precisely the route we're taking too. And these motorhomes look excellent with excellent reviews. Thank you very much for bringing them to my attention. Now I need to work out the economics of it all.

  • We did this over Xmas NYE…except in a small Toyota Yaris. Fuel is reasonably expensive there. We just stayed in budget accommodation. It's a big area, but not massive. We're going, fit, love hikes and travel relatively fast. We wouldn't have been able to do that with caravans. We enjoyed the experi in a small runaround car and we would recommend it. Motels etc on booking.com we're pretty affordable.
