  • If these work on generic toners would make it an awesome price.

    • Laser good right?

    • Do they? This is usually where people share their experiences based on what firmware is installed on the unit (&/or required workarounds).

Generics work on the MFC-L8690CDW, but only if you don't update the firmware!.

To disable automatic firmware updates, go into the settings -> "All Settings," -> "Machine Info," -> "Firmware Auto Check," and select "Off".

      • +1

wouldnt they be rolling out production with up to date firmware?

      • +1

I've accidentally updated the firmware a couple of times thinking it's to beef up security and vulnerabilities, but can confirm that we've been recently using generic toners from Amazon and it's still working fine.

        Main version: ZL
        Sub1 Version: 1.33

        • Security? You worried that someone will hijack your printer and print their d*k pics?

          • +3

            @justtoreply: connected to network….
            reasonable powerful computing device…
            security questions anyone??

(actually, for some kinds of compute power, a printer has often been the most powerful device on a network. recall reading of printer being used to do compute, rather than print tasks in research facilities - eg university lab)

          • @justtoreply: No, but they can spoof their device with the printer's MAC address then impersonate the printer to bypass MAC filtering or hide malicious traffic within your network. Great gateway for them to infiltrate your other devices.

  • Have this (yet to try generic toners ), really good printer. bought from OW $455.05 with price beat..

  • Does scanning work in windows 11 on a Snap Dragon? I have 2 other brother machines that dont atm!

Thanks OP. Bought from OW $435.24 with price beat.

Great MFC. Used it to print round stickers with Avery labels, and custom greeting cards.

I use it heavily to scan documents to my consume folder of my paperless-ngx set up. The OCR is ok, I find myself having to fix it with the paperless-gpt plugin — usually on more complex text layouts.

Btw, does NOT fit on the upper shelf of the Ikea Trotten — I have, however, placed it on vibration dampers I had lying around and works great.

  • Can you feed multi-page docs into this for scanning?

  • Do you know the reason why the cartridges are twice as expensive as the other model?

  • same as another post got it with PB from OW for $435.24

  • just realised that the MFC-L8390CDW is LED Printer

  • i bought from Amazon. i like their returns better than Officeworks if something silly is wrong with the printer.

i picked this over 8690 because 5ghz wifi

  • Anyone know if the software in the 8390 or the 8690 support Oauth for email authentication?

  • +2

Looks like the 8390 has gone back up. $639. The 8690 is still available though

    • Looks like it’s back at the sale price.

  • If you don't need the auto-document feeder on top, get the Brother DCP-L3520CDW. I have this.
