Which nbn Modem Is Good to Buy

I recently switched from Telstra to Leaptel. I didn't change my modem; my Telstra Gen 3 modem worked seamlessly with Leaptel as soon as I switched it on. However, I discovered that my landline phone stopped working because I need to configure SIP/VoIP settings, which are locked on the Telstra modem.

Therefore, I need to purchase a reliable modem that offers good speed, minimal drop-out issues, and the capability to set up a VoIP landline phone. I am currently on a 100/16 NBN plan and live in a two-story house with around 14-15 devices connected, including laptops, mobile phones, CCTV, TV, smart bulbs, etc.

Could you recommend a budget modem/router that I can buy? Would a modem/router combo be sufficient for a large house, or should I consider buying a separate router? Please guide me on what sort of setup I should have and which one I should buy.

If you are on FTTP you don't need a modem I'm pretty sure. You'd just need a router. If you are on FTTN then you'd need a modem too but I'm sorry my knowledge is outdated in that regard.

    • Well, you still need a modem, but NBN Co provides it. You'd think it hard not to notice when they give you a modem, but people still don't comprehend.

      • You'd need a modem if you rent/buy one of those places where the previous tenant/owner took it with them. Yes that's a thing unfortunately.

  • Fibre to the property , Eero 6+ is my recommendation .

    • I have the Eero 7 Max and whilst it's good in the sense that it's reliable and "just works", it doesn't have a lot of features that I can tinker with.

Do you really need the landline (VoIP)? That seriously limits the routers to choose from. You could always get a separate VoIP ATA, but it does make for messy wiring.

I agree, ditched my home phone 10+ years ago, everyone has a mobile now.

  • Also need some advice on this. Current have HFC connection box, and 4-year-old TP-link wifi 5 router that came free with the plan. Would like to extend the wifi range and potentially have faster wifi (with Wifi 6) without spending too much. I tried some extenders but they were crap. Any recommendations for a cheap router? Thanks

If your problem is with Telstra modem not allowing VoIP configuration, wouldn't it be cheaper to keep the current modem/router, and buy a separate VoIP gateway / ATA?

  • Got this for my grandmother

Seems to be working well. Not as many VOIP cutouts like she was getting with the Telstra Smart modem (although that could've been other issues)

    • I've got the same NetComm NF18 CloudMesh from my first NBN provider/reseller Origin. It's still going strong and I'm so impressed with it, I picked up a free new one off Marketplace as a spare.

  • Thanks everyone for your help.
