Single Channel Dashcam

Hi guys, I'm looking to go overseas and will be doing a roadtrip in a hire car for a portion of it. I'm looking for a dashcam to record my travels as should be going on some really nice scenic routes. I don't need anything related to safety/GPS etc mainly just picture quality and ease of sticking it up in different hire cars and connecting it to the cigarette lighter.
I'll only need single channel and preferably one that holds a good size microsd card. Wondering what you guys would recommend? I see that viofos have gone up in price and entry level ones are dual channel which I don't need

Looking to spend $150 or preferably less if there any that are good bang for buck.

Thanks

  • Spare phone constantly recording?

    • Don't have a spare phone with that much storage or can take microSD but also think it might overheat if I'm recording for hours on end with a phone.

    • Yeah saw this but wasn't sure if I can get a higher quality one if I only need 1 channel.

  • https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/navman-mivue-170-safety-d… for $119. It can hold a 256GB MicroSD. I've got a Navman, and it's lasted me about 6 years or so. I am replacing it with a VioFo which is on its way.

Could get a second hand action cam like a GoPro Hero 7 Black and above on marketplace, cheap mount from Amazon for $10-15. You can re-use it to vlog when you're not in the car.

  • As a dashcam installer, my advice would be to skip the dashcam if you're prioritising filming/picture quality especially at <$150 - as mentioned above, you're better off with a second hand action cam (GoPro, Osmo Action etc), charge it via a cigarette lighter port when you're in the car.

  • Don't. Get a action cam and a suction cup. turn it on when you see something cool. What happens when you record weeks of footage? you're going to sift through it for highlights? edit it every night?

Otherwise, some of the action cams have a button that saves the last 30 seconds of footage.

  • What does "single channel" relate to in a dash cam?

Some of them have multiple cameras that can record simultaneously (front, rear, cabin).

Single channel typically means front view only.
