Optus Don't Accept Proof of Age Card for Prepaid Activation Anymore?

Their requirements are a bit clear as mud… it says not accepted online but surely that can't be right.

Why accept all other forms of photo id but not proof of age. A friend was on Optus nbn but since he didn't have photo ID they wouldn't renew his contract, so he went with Launtel. I guess I could take my sim into a retailer but that kind of defeats the purpose of buying the sim with the intent of taking it home and activating yourself.

  • The id number on proof of age cards is exactly the same as your drivers license number, in SA.

    • Same in Qld.

Why would you need a proof of age card if you have a drivers licence with your date of birth on it?

I thought proof of age cards were for people without drivers licences.

I'm epileptic, when I'm under a medical driving ban (typically becasue my neurologist is tweaking my medication), WA's Department of Transport physically takes my drivers license and stores it in their office. I have a Proof of Age card to use when that happens.

        • Come to SA. You don't have to carry your licence here to drive, so taking it off you to prevent you driving would be pointless.

        • Why do they bother doing that? In WA you're not legally required to have you licence on you while driving.

          • @Jake D: Section 53(2) of the Road Traffic Act 1974 states that a driver must produce their license when demanded by a police officer.

            • @GordonD: Not immediately though. The second half of the sentence states you can produce it to a police station later.

but it shall not be an offence if
the driver subsequently produces the licence, within a
reasonable time after demand, to the Director General or to the
              officer-in-charge of any police station.

@Jake D: I have no idea, it's just a PITA. They take ages to get it back to me in the mail, yet will collect it in person. I know exactly where they are stored, as I know some one in the DoT, but they insist on sending back in the mail. Drives me crazy, heaps of people don't recognise the proof of age card either "What's this?" I typically get when I hand it over. My last ban, I didn't report it to the DoT becasue I'm sick of dealing with their crap, I just didn't drive till the neuro said I could.

  • Optus NBN is different from mobile prepaid with ID purposes, Optus NBN goes through a credit check and 100 points of ID process with primary and secondary forms of ID. Proof of age card, I believe is secondary where as passport and DL is primary and you need at least 1 from primary.

Proof of age card should still be a legal form of ID for prepaid. Unless the rep doesn't know what to select, they prob just lied that they can't take proof of age card or something.

    • "Australian Proof of Age / PhotoCard: a current Medicare card (full, interim or reciprocal) must always be paired with a Proof of Age / PhotoCard. Includes Digital Proof of Age / PhotoCards issued in NSW and SA. (It's recommended that you also carry your physical card when visiting our retail stores.) Not accepted online."

I think, but not sure, they're saying it's just the digital proof of age ones that aren't accepted? In any case, this entry is under the primary/70 points section.

      • digital proof of age ones that aren't accepted

Maybe they need a physical card to make a photocopy? Auspost don't accept digital licence for passport renewal either. So is some hotels.

      • That's saying, correct me if I'm wrong, proof of age cards are not accepted online but in-store it's accepted.

Online process goes through verification process of someone's DL and passport numbers. Maybe their cross verification checks with proof of age cards online can't accurately match the person with RMS or whoever they're matching with.

        • Interesting… some time ago you could make up a DL. My experience has been that people who get commissions for e.g a mobile phone plan, the guy on the phone just overlooks it to approve you…

          • @bluejeans: When I worked for Optus retail, policies change all the time, one week its one thing another week it's another. It gets really annoying real fast.

But what I learnt from ID, even when they scan your ID in-store, it's just an easier process for the system to input your card details, they don't save the picture ID in the system. This may have changed since I left.

But with prepaid, I got alot of proof of age cards and we just enter it in the system and it all accepts, I even got a number wrong and it accepted the card. It was prob more relaxed cause it's prepaid, but post-paid was more annoying with proof of age cards cause we had to ask for more IDs and the identity cross reference checks can come back randomly.

In saying that, go in store with the proof of age card for prepaid and it should be fine. Unless their policy changed, I wouldn't be surprised.

  • What is a proof of age card where does it come from?

    • You get it from the same place as your drivers license. It looks the same, just says 'Proof of age'. Not everyone drives and photo ID is required alot these days.

  • I found my proof of age card in sa to be fairly useless, very rare that anyone accepts it, and if they do I need to mail in a signed copy of it and it takes upto a month. Probably better off buying a passport but they aren’t cheap

  • Use a passport?

    • $400 for photo id…
