Lenovo Yoga 9i from Lenovo Refurb Auction Is Now Falling Apart - What Can I Do?

In late 2023/early 2024, I bought a Lenovo Yoga 9i 16IRP8 (13905H & 4050) from a semi well known Australian auction site that auctions off "certified manufacturer Lenovo refurbished" devices.

At first all was fine. I've used it connected to the charger 24/7 at my desk, not very heavy use, never really pushed it too hard. But recently (~6months) the temperatures have skyrocketed on the CPU (90-100C with only HWINFO and Firefox open) and even highs of 105C in HWINFO. The chassis gets boiling hot if you look at it wrong. Also, some keys have been failing intermittently before coming back to normal for no real reason. Just right now I had the 2 key die and the 3 and e key died for ten seconds before coming back to life.

What are my possible recourses? I'd expect this thing to last longer than what it did.

    Auction?
If you didn't before, you now know you have zero rights for items bought at auction. Don't do it again.

Auction rules apply, so you have no recourse, hence why it was 'cheaper'.

I'd expect this thing to last longer than what it did.

Oh well, nothing you can do about that now.

    • It's lived indoors on a wooden desk plugged into power its entire life. I have never dropped it or otherwise caused physical damage to it. The most hardware intensive thing it has done is play FPS games. I have a much cheaper Lenovo from 2016 that runs cooler than this does.

      • A small desktop PC would have been better specs, lasted longer and performed the same job …

Why was a cheap second-hand laptop even considered for this job?!?

PS. Live and learn, there is zero recourse for auction purchases, they are always sold "as-is" - meaning no warranty, no guarantee to even function!

You even found a way to make a German car reference on an overheating Lenovo thread. FFS.

      • German cars do not break down.

        Straight out of Kabarett.

Sounds like the laptop needs a good cleaning and thermal repaste.
Especially if you live in a dusty area, the fans can clog up and which will cause the laptop to be unable to cool it self.
The keys stopping responding is almost certainly related to the heat.
I would recommend looking up how to take apart the laptop and reapplying thermal paste.

    • second that plus looking into ventilation where the laptop is sitting

It's worth taking the bottom cover off and checking out the battery to see if it is bulging. Swelling batteries can start to bend and put pressure on the motherboard to cause things like you are describing. It's also an easy fix as batteries are not too expensive and are usually just one cable and a couple of screws to remove.
Definitely a first step before re-pasting CPU etc.
Note: Worth looking up a youtube video or guide for your model of laptop as there are invariably screws hidden under rubber feet or bumpers that are not obvious. Will save you a lot of frustration and colorful language….and potential damage to the bottom cover
