Got a Rinnai Infinity 26L unit supplied and installed with universal controller for $1750 (after $150 rebate). This was for a like for like install as we were switching from a Bosch unit with similar setup to Rinnai so there was not a lot of additional work required. [Applicable for SA Only]

  • For additional context - I was quoted between $2300 to $2900 for the same unit by most suppliers. Found one local who apparently is a Rinnai partner and gets great pricing on Rinnai units. Happy to pass on the details if someone needed.

    • Yes please, I'm very interested.

Are there actually people out there replacing electric systems with gas? I can't wait to go the other direction!

    • -2

A lot of people are. The uptake in Victoria when VEU was pro-gas was quite the contrast from public acknowledgement. It’s still your more efficient heating source if you factor in year-round elemental, household and water on demand factors. Heat Pumps are cool but they aren’t as magical as many would suggest.

    • +2

Yeah strange. I know it costs more for a heatpump upfront, but running costs are negligible with my solar system. I'm so glad I don't have to given ongoing money to the gas cartel for my heating needs. No ongoing gas connection / supply fees, all electric here in my home.

Also : no need to let another meter reader onto my property

  • +7

Don't do it, as more Australians switch to electricity and leave the gas network, the remaining gas customers will likely face higher costs. Those fixed gas distribution network costs need to be rcovered across fewer customers.

    • If that is the case, then why is it electricity that is becoming so much more expensive than the gas?

"In SA, electricity prices rose by 20%+ in 2024 while Gas rose by 7%.. in 2025, Electircity prices are going up by 9%, while Gas prices are going up by 3.5%.".

    • And the cost of quitting gas - ie removing the meter aka "abandonment", not just disconnection - is another issue to think about:

      • NSW: While gas distributors in this state don’t provide abolishment fees on their sites, in 2023 the NSW Parliament found Jemena charged many residential customers $1,151.70 for gas abolishment, and that fees in NSW can reach as high as $1,445.
      • VIC: In 2023 the fee for gas abolishment in Victoria was capped at $242.
      • WA: ATCO charges $1,204.67. You also have to first pay for disconnection.
      • ACT: Evoenergy charges $948.20 for a regular residential gas abolishment. However, gas abolishment in the ACT may be reduced to around $242 in the future.
      • SA: ????

      • Nah, you don't have to pay a cent for that, simply call your retailer to cancel the contract and if they ask saying you're moving to a place with no gas. My current place is still connected to gas, last time they found I used about 0.001 of a unit they sent me a bogus bill including 9 months of supply charge assuming from the date previous owner disconnected the service but I have no obligation to pay. The only reason the reading jump because I plugged in the weber to test if gas was connected. They have since capped the meter and stopped sending anonymous bill.

Looks like these mobs are desperate to hold people onto gas. With the amount of money government at both levels throwing in for battery you might as well ditch gas altogether and go resistive tank and use the battery to shift away from peak usage. Unless space is an issue hot water storage is way better than instantaneous.
If you have solar it's even more enticing to ditch gas hot water.

You'd have to be an idiot to walk into a trap as obvious as this. Enjoy being one of the last ones paying the "accelerated depreciation" of the residential gas network.

I also note that OP is looking at battery, for reference with 20kwh battery system you can pretty much shift your entire home electricity import into off peak hour and use the mobs that offering 8c overnight rate or free hour and get your hot water running during that period.

The batteries will be good for houses that are not dependent on the grid.. unfortunately, we are at least in the winters even after we have that battery.

      • If you have lived in SA and owned a house that long you could've done all that on the cheap, 4 years ago they threw out generous rebates to get people on solar and batteries. Those jumped the queue already making thousands in savings. I remembered people getting 6.6kw solar and 10kwh battery for around $5000. It's not too late now with federal rebates.
Without solar you can still makes money using batteries by filling it up when cheap and use later, you can do that twice a day to ride out of morning and evening peak.

As the article below says "We've been talking about net zero by 2050, that number is in people's heads,".

Calm down people, Gas is not going anywhere.. The current household decline rate is -0.1% PA.. if we continue at 10x that at 1%, it will take 50+ years to get rid of gas.

  • Brands - I see lots of offers on Facebook to switch hot water to electric, and lots of different brands. Haven't heard of most of them.

What are the good brands (and what to avoid)?
