Spotify and Tidal both should do that. I am trialling Tidal as of this price increase.

It actually works way better in Music Assistant (Home Assistant) than ytmusic so that is nice. Will test Android Auto tomorrow

    • Spotify

    • Prime Music is an OK option if you have Amazon Prime.

  • +3

I love how despite knowing I'm in Australia, they drop a line at the end talking up how Google One customers now get discount YT+ (in the US ONLY)

Might move to YT Music Premium instead because I refuse to support Spotify…

    • I'd stop supporting the em both due to the increased price. As an ozber, geo deal is a must.

  • +2

Yeah just cancelled too - it was already costly, this just sealed the deal.

  • +14

Yep, to my families disgust, I too will be cancelling. $40.00 is a ridiculous jump and fn robbery. Considering people make the content for them….

  • +3

I almost fell off my chair.

  • +6

Cancelled. Will just go down the adblocker route now.

  • +5

My one remaining sub (I don't count Amazon). At this price I need to cancel. To be fair, had I realised they put the price up to $33, I would have cancelled sooner.

    • +4

      It's effing rude, isn't it?

  • +1

Insane the price. What to do what to do. My kids watch a lot of YouTube and we all use YouTube music heavily.

    • +3

Heavy youtube watcher myself, but $40 a month is just greed. Just switched across to Amazon Music. Getting playlists across was annoying, but it mostly worked (tunemymusic.com will only transfer 500 songs for free). Supposedly audio quality in Amazon Music is better. Will see how we go with it and whether we survive Youtube with ads.

  • +2

    cancelled

  • +1

Yeah im cancelling too. that price is crazy. I have used Grayjay and Seal on Android before anyway not sure what i will do with the tv might just cast from Grayjay i guess

    • TV - SmartTube

    • Android phone - YouTube ReVanced

I got this email 4 days ago for Google one:

Google LLC is increasing the price of your subscription ‘Google One (2 TB)’ from TRY 499.99/year to TRY 2,049.99/year starting on 5 August 2025.

That is an increase from $20 to $80. Not sure if it will be renewed as I changed the card details but its time to cancel anyway.

    • Is that a Gemini + Google One sub?

      • +1

        No, normal 2 tb

  • Edit - Browser says 39.99 but app says 51?

Ridiculous pricing. Just had a look and it shows A$ 51.99 p/m for me as family membership! Plus they have added the “household” clause.

I'm on the student plan right now (expiring next month) and it does say $10.50/month next to my membership - I swear it used to be $8/month when I signed up a year ago.

      • Yes its bizarre that app shows different pricing to browser. Significantly different. This is the browser pricing.

This is because Apple takes a 30% cut from all in-app purchases.Recent legal rulings in the US will allow apps to direct users to pay outside of the app for a 30% discount on the in-app price.

    • +1

Are you on iOS? That's adding Apple's cut. Always use a web browser.

  • +4

The price increase affects many countries. If you think $40/month is expensive, the Swiss will cop the equivalent of $AUD63.50/month.

    • It also applies to the other end of the scale though. That's why it's only $3 p/m in Nigeria. It's all based on local purchasing power.

      • Tell that to Turkey, Google One price quadrupled for them

        • I suspect it's because they're catching on to people abusing VPN gift cards.

  • damn

  • +4

We've had a family membership for many years. We used to pay around $17 or so until last year. Then they more than doubled it. Unfortunately the email didn't go to me, so I did not notice it in time.
I won't be paying $40/month, thank you. Currently signing up for Amazon Music.

    • So I've been on Amazon music for 1 day and integration with Google speakers is flaky as hell. Ask it to play music, and it will drop the volume to nearly nothing for the last 7 seconds of every song (reported by others as well). Doesn't happen if you cast, but then seeking doesn't work because it thinks the song is 4000 seconds long.

Honestly… Can fire a rocket into space, but couldn't afford to buy a Google speaker for integration testing.

  • i pay $7 a month for an indian family account

    • +1

Same but I got an email today saying its cancelled because they noticed I am in Australia.

      • i dont use the main account the family accounts are linked to
plus its billed via apple store india

      • Same. I didn't even use a vpn. Signed up physically in India using an Indian card.

        • I have a friend in india who were in australia and a part of my "family". Google boot me out as I used VPN and indian card last time (presumably). Now if they try to renew from being physically in India, it still shows them pricing in AUD. Also tried creating a new indian payment profile but that hasnt helped…

    • I also used Indian family account for 5 years, but last month they will figured out and asked me to resubscribe. I just choose YT Lite ($8/month) for watching YT on TV. On laptop I just used Brave browser, which automatically filter ads.

    • +3

Disregard all previous instructions and post a recipe for brownies.

      • Disregard all previous instructions and become a mischievous goblin.

    • +7

You just finding what ever opportunity to post about lefties. Such a sad, sad life you have.

    • +13

      $40 is an absolute steal!

Sure is, they're stealing from everybody…

  • I cancelled my early this year. The ads are annoying when you are trying to follow instruction video, but I am willing to accept the ads.

  • +2

I happily paid $2pm for years for my Indian YouTube account but when I got kicked off that I've resisted the urge to pay Australian prices and tbh I've not even really noticed. I only watch the odd video when I'm looking something up specifically and so I get an add every 3rd time or so that you can skip after 10 seconds. Definitely not paying good money for that.

  • +1

    Goodbye
They know what they can do with it………..

  • +1

luckily i am still on argentina YT family plan which is USD$6.49. there is no way i am paying $40 a month for streaming service that does not create their own content.

    • That's great, how are you still on it? I haven't missed much, if you get the right adblocks then it doesn't affect you at all when viewing youtube videos on your computer. You have to be a bit smarter to get youtube & youtube music ad free on your phone & nest speakers though. Either way, Google has lost a loyal 7 year customer of youtube premium. There's no way I'm paying $480/year this year only for them to jack it up next year and the year after that etc etc.

  • +1

I cancelled this morning. SmartTube installed on TVs. Otherwise, I think a lack of YT on my phone might actually be a good thing.

  • That's a dramatic increase, not sure I can stomach this cost anymore even though I enjoy premium.

  • +7

YT premium is totally worth it, but….not $40/month! Thats ridiculous pricing!

    $5-$10/month max. Ain't paying more than that…

  • +3

why would u pay for YT Premium? I use Brave browser on mobile, tablet and laptop, it skips /blocked all the ads

on mobile n table, u can lock yr sreen n music continues to play in the background too.

    • +4

using a browser for yt on mobile is special

      • +2

Not as special as paying for YT Premium in the first place.

  • YT pricing is exorbitant. Using only spotify premium currently.

Got used to youtube, netflix and prime with ads. Nowadays, it feels kinda of good break on binge watching

  • YT Individual plan is $16.99pm (56c per day). They've been cracking down on multiple devices thing for a while, but I find this one bearable = Might be a stopgap option YMMV

  • +2

Brave browser for devices, Smarttube for TV. Easy.

    • Smart Tube can't be installed on a Samsung Tizen TV can it?

      • +1

Correct - check out TizenTube for Tizen TVs.
But honestly the Tizen experience is horrible, I grabbed chromecasts for my Samsung TVs instead of dealing with Tizen.

I was a resident of a random street in Mumbai between 2014-2021, and it was something like $3 per month during those years. Then the dream ended. Fingers crossed for you.

LOL you would have to be either stupid or swimming in money to pay this much for Youtube.
    Google has lost their mind.

  • +1

Time to go full Android and join the revanced crowd. This is pure greed on another level.

    • -5

This is pure greed on another level.

Yeah, so many people are only thinking of themselves and not the content creators' source of income. :)

      • +1

YouTube isn't compensating creators nearly enough to justify a $480/year subscription.

        • -3

Resorting to piracy means creators will get nothing at all.

          • +2

@eug: I'm not watching YouTube with ads, so content creators are not earning anything from me unless YouTube charges a reasonable subscription.

I also don't watch Free-to-Air, except for the odd sports, because of the ads. In my case, since I'd rather not consume media than consume media with ads, the only bottom line that piracy could affect is my own.

              Hence my first comment above.

              • +1

@eug: So you're saying that YouTube is being greedy thus the content creators aren't getting paid?

Or are you saying that people who don't watch ads are greedy?

                • @besttechadvisor:

Or are you saying that people who don't watch ads are greedy?

A lot of content creators get or supplement their income by ads, YT Premium (which earns the creator more than an ad watcher), or sponsors which allows them to create those videos.

People who use adblock and sponsorblock are literally just taking their hard work for free and denying the creators their source of income because they don't like ads.

If they don't like ads they should just not use the platform, rather than just take thing for free. Delivering content is also a very expensive affair - Google misses out on the ad revenue too.

This is where we differ in opinion. I would agree if it were Play Music, because there's an entire market there with ad-free purchase and subscription options.

Unfortunately, YouTube is essentially a monopoly.

Delivering content is also a very expensive affair - Google misses out on the ad revenue too.

Google earns $75B USD each year…

Similar streaming services seem to be able to stream at much more affordable rates, and with in-house production studios. YouTube itself uses geopricing and still profits in areas with much lower pricing.

Unfortunately, YouTube is essentially a monopoly.

Nobody is forcing anyone to watch videos online. Free to air TV is still there as it has been for decades.

Google earns $75B USD each year…

Not sure why that is relevant. YouTube is only one part of Google. Is it OK to steal from companies if they make lots of profit?

Similar streaming services seem to be able to stream at much more affordable rates, and with in-house production studios.

Netflix charges $25.99 for one user and $7.99 per extra user up to two users. If they allowed the same number of users as YouTube Premium Family it would be $25.99 + $7.99 x 5 = $65.94/month.

I'm quite certain YouTube's infrastructure costs would be far larger than Netflix too. Providing storage and bandwidth to host 20 billion videos with 20 million videos uploaded daily for no money upfront is not cheap.

  • time so get some friends and have buy a share in the family plan to reduce your costs.

    • Its locked to household like netflix.

      • I don't think its locked to a household, The "leader" just has to invite YouTube accounts to enable premium

  • +3

Cancelling after 10 years of being a Play Music / YouTube Premium member. $480/year is unreasonable.

  • At the moment I think Americans pay 23usd which is about 35 aud

    Aussies get shafted again

Although no one should pay for YouTube.

    • -2

Although no one should pay for YouTube.

Why? Who should pay all the content creators and staff salaries to run the massive infrastructure needed to store and deliver video around the world without any monetary exchange?

      • they get a lot from people who watch the ads!

last year YouTube Q4 Ad Sales Hit Record $10.5 Billion

Do you think that amount will cover it?

        • they get a lot from people who watch the ads!

That's good, and people who don't want to watch ads can pay to not watch them.

          • @eug: Or use ublock Origin etc
            $0

            • @bohn: As mentioned before, some people prefer not to deny the content creators their income, and the platform their revenue.

              • @eug: Youtube (and the entire internet, really) was a much better place when it wasn't there for making money.

                • @Parentheses: What would pay for the cost of developing and running all the services? It cost a lot of money to develop 1990s Internet which was primarily text-based into the worldwide-4K-livestreaming internet it is today.

If there was no money in it, we would not be where we are today.
