Red Energy Service Charge Price Increase

Did anyone else get an email from Red Energy about their service charge increasing from 90c per day to over 134c per day? Never mind the usage increase itself which is pretty steep.

I couldn't believe it had to read it multiple times.

Is this an outlier in the electricity market or the norm now?

I'm in NSW.

i saw mine went up too.
im moving house in aug, ill change then

    • Why such an extreme step. My advice would be to switch energy retailer, not the house :)

      • we're moving from a Swiss cheese house to something where i cant feel the breeze on my feet while at the kitchen with windows closed

Just shop around for another provider. 95c supply charge with OVO. Plus 3 hours free electricity from 11-2PM.

You think that’s bad? I’m in regional NSW (Essential Energy), got an email from Red Energy yesterday and the daily supply/service charge, currently $1.45/day is going up to $1.98/day.

I’ll be looking at other providers of course, but Red Energy had one of the lowest supply charges on offer when I signed up with them last year, and this huge hike doesn’t give me much hope that any other providers will be any cheaper after 1 July, especially given the current prices on others are higher than Red Energy’s current prices as it is. It’s a bloody rort.

NSW is apparently going to be one of the hardest hit states with these July price increases.

    • Does that mean we need to wait until other providers make their move or do they all have to provider their new rates if we were to compare now?

      • If you compare online they have to give you their current rates as you would be switching tomorrow before the new prices apply. Unless there is a way to schedule the switch for 1st July or later. Maybe you can call to find out new rates

The new standing offer is only meant to be 9% higher so if your daily charge is going up so much, then the kWh unit rates should only be changing very little.

Holy hell. I'm in the Essential Energy distribution zone too and I was very close to signing up to Red Energy in the last couple of weeks because their rates looked relatively good compared to the competition. A 53c jump in DSC is disgusting.

How much is your usage rate going from and up to?

      • Yes, it’s bullshit, isn’t it?

The rates are, with current rates first (and GST included amount in brackets):

        Peak - from 37.950 (41.745) to 39.950 (43.945)
        Shoulder - from 31.280 (34.408) to 35.150 (38.665)
        Off Peak - from 24.480 (26.928) to 29.000 (31.900)
        CL1 (for HWS) - from 15.950 (17.545) to 20.200 (22.220).

And of course, solar FIT dropping from 5c to 4c.

        • Sorry for your loss. I'm on a single rate tariff and looking at usage rates in the 40s or more.

The electricity networks scored big this year with the regulators, they were very convincing rhey require extra $$$. The service to property charge is for the poles and wires and yes across the board they are going up and pretty steep.

    Shop around.

The retailer component part of your bill, your actual energy rates should not have increased as bad.

    • Have not seen a person touching our poles and wires and I work from home lost days.. And never seen a person at night dinner time either.. What a joke

Got an increase from 73.964 c/day to 104.335 c/day from them

My local pork roll shop increases as well… $9 now ffs

    • Find a place that sells non electrified ones

$9 is considered pretty cheap these days which is sad.

    Mine went up by 24%

Origin energy seems to be the lowest for me now but rates going up on 1st July the phone rep said.

They don't offer fixed rates unfortunately

Mine are up by 55%, from 86c to $1.32. Same, I read it twice to make sure I wasn't misreading the damn thing. They also rubbed it in by dropping my solar supply from 5c/kwh to 4c/kwh.

I have a feeling that I will have to wait till 1st July to find out the best competitive rate.

They are all going up on 1st July.
We all have to pay for Bowen's cheaper electricity renewables costs somehow…

  • Whens the last time you switched?

    • Like 4 months ago guess need to do some homework

  • It must be winter.
Most important thing is all the RTesellers in your area get exactly the same price fro the Distributor, so your rate is a set of variations on Peak, Shoulder, Off Peak, Controlled load, and Daily rate.
Your new rate will have been carefully revised to look good, but you have to do the hard yards, with an excel spreadsheet, particularly watching Daily rates vs peak or offpeak or shoulder. Also be careful of bonuses

      with an excel spreadsheet

Agree, but once the spreadsheet is set up it’s very beneficial and can be used for multiple years + shared amongst friends. Definitely worth the time

  • Thanks for the heads up.
