Trade in a Car to Interstate Dealer

Hi all,
Have decided to trade in my car to an interstate dealer.
It's not much, but iam not going thru to sell it privately.

Being in Victoria, am I within my right to cancel the rego once lve traded it in? It not being traded with a rwc. So I just need to request the dealer to fill out a transfer form or a notice for disposal?

Ring up Vic roads , they'll have all the relevant information

      They said to ask Ozbargain

      • Much like every lawyer, tribunal, etc

    • And ask the dealer what they would like you to do after you ring vicroads.

    • You can use a phone to make calls?

      • Stop it! Really?? A phone??

      • Unless you're Commissioner Gordon and can turn on the Batsignal.

Huh? Once you trade it, it belongs to someone else.
You can of course ask the dealer and they may well say go ahead as they probably don't want the Vic rego. But to do it without asking, is likely illegal.
Why not cancel rego before trading?
I traded a Vic rego car to a nsw dealer a few years ago and they were happy for me to cancel rego and keep money, but I asked before I traded.

    • i can't cancel the rego, as I planning on driving there to trade-in the car.

        Talk to them
Agree with them to cancel the rego
        Drive to them
        Take off plates
        Drive home in new car
        Cash in rego

        Not so hard eh?

        • or cancel and arrange permit ti drive it?
          probably cost more though
          .

  • Yes, you should ask the dealer. Dealer may have factored in the refund of registration in the purchase price.

Secondly, are you driving the car there or are they picking it up with a tow truck?

    • driving there and picking it up and driving the new car back.
they asked me to give them a transfer form. But my concern was that it's still under my name.

You get a copy of the transfer form.

Keep it in case you get a fine.

No need to cancel the rego (which requires you to hand back the plate)

        • thanks, i wasn't worry about the rego as it due in a few weeks anyway.

@godofpizza: FFS - if it's due in few weeks, then there's nothing to cash in

Just give them the car, take whatever paperwork you can, drive away and enjoy your new car. There is literally nothing else to do.
