[VENT] 2 Hours of Failing to Fix Adobe Software {FAIL}

even though I'm not the most computer literate person, since I'm the youngest I often have my go at fixing small issues.

I just had to vent here and share hoping something could be made of this, also that this helps someone.

the problem: family member had adobe software installed, it came as part of their work years ago, except adobe quickly did a 180 and started asking for money.
they noticed on a regular basis adobe process running in the background using like 50 60% CPU for no reason. so they uninstalled everything except Acrobat.

now Acrobat started acting funny. whenever you open a PDF it opens a square window asking them to sign into their corporation (this sign in had stopped working a long time ago, can't sign in no matter what - and there is no "sign out" or dismiss "don't use an account" option). and even half the time when just selecting a file to preview it in windows, it freeezes the preview and shoots up a blank white version of the same square, but you can tell it's got "Adobe service something something" on the title.
it does this every single time.

the solution: so as you do I looked up the problem in google (as well as the ai solution that pops up which doesn't make sense and changes every single time you change the search words). found all kinds of solutions. none of them worked. you reinstall acrobat and it remembers everything, and shows the sign into corporation window again every time.

I made sure to go to Remove programs and remove Acrobat, as well as "Adobe services something" under it. reinstalled. nope still broken.

the final one I tried seemed like it would work. a special adobe cleanup tool from adobe's own site, it claims to fully remove everything if your adobe software somehow didn't fully install/uninstall. I did that. it asks that you restart the computer, and after remembering some comment I scrolled past that said "have a look in task manager for adobe process" sure enough after fully removing everything adobe and restarting the computer there is a process at the top "Adobe Acrobat Updater" doing something. you can't put out the flames.

I went to windows settings checked all areas for any trace of corporate account or adobe corporate account, nothing. nothing is linked to adobe. installed acrobat again, and it remembers everything. 2 hours and I couldn't change a thing. not only this, it's worse because on top of the "sign into corporate" window, I got a "Try Acrobat Pro for free" pop up when I opened a file.

and also yes there was a popular solution I found early on, go to preferences, and where it says account email (where it shows nothing since the beginning btw, it's just blank and the "sign out" button is blank you can't click it because no account is signed in), enter gibberish and the popup will go away. even if it used to no it doesn't work.

after 2 hours the problem still exists, and it got worse. can't fix it. I'm surprised if anyone except an IT expert can.

ALL I wanted to do was uninstall the broken Acrobat Reader (that keeps directing with popup to sign in to a corporation where user no longer has a sign in), and install the same free Acrobat Reader again, so that stupid thing doesn't popup every single time you open a file.

so here is my warning, I heard rumors on the internet about them being an evil company. it's true. if you ever installed adobe software on your computer, good luck getting rid of it and everything it remembers if it breaks itself. it's permanently on there and your only option is to setup or buy a new computer.

unless you have no other option, if you don't need it, DO NOT install ANY adobe softwares on your computer.

whine over.

Is there something in the windows registry?

    • I don't know but I wasn't about to start typing code to remove something that's not a problem on my own computer.

      • After thinking about it, the registry is probably where the corporate account thing is stored.
It's understandable that you don't want to go stuffing about in there though, especially not on your own PC.

        • yeah tbh I'm done for today.

obviously maybe some other programs and stuff are relying on some kind of previous work connection. so I don't really want to mess it up.

      • start typing code

        😂

Best to use a 3rd party uninstaller such as "ioBit Uninstaller" that tracks installation and them removes everything including Registry entries.

Worst case scenario - do a full backup of data, reformat the hard disk and then do a clean install of Windows and then all other programs

  • It'd cost me more time and frustration to learn Adobe alternatives at this point. My brain is hardening and I'm not as willing to learn new things as I was when I was a kid. I do pay the student price though.

    • just learned from a few searches that at the very basic level, these adobe programs (except probably whatever corny AI they are injecting into it) were designed and programmed by coding geniuses 20 years ago. and so as a tool nothing has changed, it's only that adobe is running some "Adobe genuine service" check constantly in the background to make sure 100% that you are a paying customer. they described it as almost like a 24/7 virus scan, except it's checking all the adobe stuff that it isn't fake. they are milking it so hard.

family member thought "what is this crap" when they saw it always running and hoarding the computers energy. they didn't realise until recently because they barely used the installed version and it was identical to what was available the in the cloud, but whenever they made that choice to "install it" was a big mistake.

      • I used to pirate Adobe. And I probably would today except the AI features are a massive time saver and they rely on Adobe servers. I do recall tools that scrub traces of Adobe from your computer that people would use before pirating, but I've been paying for so long that I can't recall.

        • yeah well whatever they are doing. they are probably constantly breaking things conveniently to force people to pay something.
the official cleanup tool was probably still downloadable to prevent them from being sued or something, but it probably can't find everything and so conveniently leaves files behind.

by the way one of the users online in "adobe community" was a paying subscriber of Acrobat Pro, and they were having the exact same issue. 🤣

        • What are the AI features that you use?

Adobe Acrobat is a paid program. The sign in window shows up because you need to sign in to an account with an active paid license for it. It sounds like you've used up the free trial so that is why it no longer works.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is the name of the free version of the program, maybe try that one instead?

    • no no I know the difference there is adobe acrobat reader free (not called "free" but you get what I mean, as long as you don't start a free trial of Pro). I have installed it on other computers with no issue.
Acrobat Pro is the paid version.

      • There's 3 different versions:

        Adobe Acrobat Reader = free
        Adobe Acrobat Standard = paid
        Adobe Acrobat Pro = paid

When it asked you to trial Pro is what made me think you had installed Standard instead of Reader.
There are other brands with free PDF viewers as well but I've never tried them personally. Might be worth a try though?

        • Adobe Acrobat Reader = free

yes the top one I always make sure of that.

There are other brands with free PDF viewers as well but I've never tried them personally. Might be worth a try though?

yeah that's what I'm considering. but family member seems to value the ability to fill out confidential forms or whatever they called it so it might require the official version?

        • Pro is the one you want.

          • @AustriaBargain: ok so are you saying the reason they could fill protected type documents until now, is because the Reader was bugged out and still giving them the paid version?
and then because all other adobe was uninstalled, it must have started losing it.

tbh it looked like the free version to me. I reinstalled and it looked identical. except for the "Try Pro for free" popup.

        Incorrect
        Adobe Acrobat is also paid
A$20.99/moincl. GST (A$251.88/yr) for the annual, billed monthly plan.

        https://www.adobe.com/au/acrobat.html

You need Adobe Acrobat Reader which has always been FREE

But there are alternatives that are less resource hungry and perform more functions for free

So ditch everything Adobe and install a free PDF creator and reader.
There are plenty to choose from

        I recommend Foxit PDF reader
It also creates PDFs from various documents

    • by the way sorry if I keep editing my comment happens a lot.

also noticed, since the last time I installed Acrobat Reader Free which was probably a year ago. the install process was hella dodgy. like it just shows you a window showing the progress and % (and it takes way longer to download than a free file viewer should btw) and then all of a sudden finished! like it used to show you exactly what it was doing.

You can't make a silk purse from a sows arse. Adobe is a bloatware, interfering pox virus. Look for an alternative app. Any alternative is an improvement.

    • Look for an alternative app. Any alternative is an improvement.

      yes good advice.

hopefully my do not install advice is also remembered. doesn't matter if they offer you 6 months/one year free don't do it.

      • I suspect someone probs hit the upgrade or try AI button, and it let the next level Adobe pox in.

        • I think the mistake was "installing" adobe suit or whatever onto the computer.

apparently it basically showed in a window, the exact same cloud versions of the adobe tools they can access in chrome browser. no point installing it, it just give them a bs excuse to invade your computer and burrow there permanently.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Adobe used to be OK. If the rellos can hack a free version go down that road.Change doesn't come easy to some dyed in the wool ppl. Maybe suss out if Foxit Editor / Reader fits the bill???
Just the update takeover shit in Adobe is reason to ditch it. It's so invasive and resource robbing.

I'd like to buy an uppercase letter please John. FFS.

    • WHAT A CAPITAL IDEA, OLD BEAN.

The free version of Revo Unistaller has caught most application leftovers for me.

Not sure how well it will work for you now you've uninstalled, but if you do a tracked (re)install you might be able to fully uninstall all traces.

My suggestion, install BC Uninstaller (which is free), uninstall anything to do with Adobe, and then install Foxit PDF Reader (which is free).

As others have said, Adobe PDF software bites the big one and has joined the ranks of Norton, McAfee, etc. Get rid of it.

    Again, just my suggestion.

  • Sadly, I have to deal with this a lot.
A bit of googleing around whats required to remove the adobe reader profile sometimes manually is the only way around it.
This is the best solution I have used.

Hope its ok to paste this here.
This should "forget" the corp login.

Normally deleting the folder recommended is enough.
    Just restart when its done.

hi thank you. I think you are mentioning exactly what the issue is.

when going to preference>account stuff, it's got nothing there just a blank box where email is supposed to go, and the sign out button greyed out, unclickable.
but it still remembers the old corpo login. and the popup even directs straight to it. so clearly something is bugged and stuck there, even though it shows nothing.

      will try this thank you.

Format the PC and reinstall the OS. Don't touch anything Adobe again. Block off all Adobe URLs in the firewall.

  • Monkrus, and done

  • honestly don't want to dedicate anymore time to this but here is what happened in another 1+ hours. good thing is it isn't exactly my problem otherwise I would be furious.

used the official Adobe Cleanup tool again (I noticed at the end of the file it's called "DC_2021" btw so it must be from 2021) to uninstall Acrobat Reader (Free).
followed djathome's linked instruction and nerfed the Acrobat update service then looked in the appdata folder. and let me tell you not just in the roaming folder there was adobe folders in the local and local low folders too. some of them sounded like remains of Adobe cloud suit or whatever the installed version called. deleted all adobe.

restarted pc. and something told me to check task manager. Acrobat update service is STILL THERE. I figured out before closing the process you can right click and open file location. found another mountain of Adobe folders in Program Files(x86)>CommonFiles>Adobe. nerfed Acrobat update service, deleted all of the Adobe named folders in CommonFiles. restarted pc. (I did not attempt to install Acrobat Reader at all during this btw).

ok now after restart no more Adobe process in task manager. great. downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader (Free) from Adobe site. the new installation is dodgy like i already mentioned it just downloads and installs everything it wants and doesn't tell you what it's doing.

open Adobe Acrobat Reader, it had this Adobe logo window plus some tiny text that appeared for a few seconds, that never happened before it's memory must be completely wiped I thought.

BUT NO. the corporation sign in popup appears again. I close Acrobat Reader, go to a folder with PDF's. the second one I click opens a BLANK Acrobat Reader popup again, and blocks the preview. it's exactly the same as before, only allows 1 preview, before blocking it.

last resort I go through the Acrobat Preferences.
there is one that says "show messages from adobe when opening a file" and right next to it "don't show messages from adobe when opening a file" (what? aren't those the same thing) I untick the first one and tick the second one.

then found one more in preferences, "allow PDF previews in file expolorer". I tick that, and it doesn't let you scroll down btw, you have to find the scroll bar and click to move it down where it exposes "ok" and "cancel" (dodgy af). click ok. now the previews at least must work right? NO. NO CHANGE. ACROBAT IS EVIL. user wants to use acrobat, I'M DONE.

I probably forgot a few small things but I also clicked the option to "not use the new reader" because I thought that might fix things. nope.

  • Try Sumatra PDF - anything has got to be better than adob3

  • Last thought. Is there anything stored in credential manager pertaining to adobe?
Only other thing I can really think of being a corp sign in.
Still an amateur after all :D
    DJ

    • s there anything stored in credential manager pertaining to adobe?

I don't know but I will look it up on google next week.

I had a similar thought, user already uninstalled everything adobe except Acrobat so I couldn't do anything about that, but in the Remove programs area there was Acrobat, and Adobe services (or a program called somethign similar). I thought maybe I had to sign out of that somehow first, before uninstalling. but from my memory of quickly looking at the Start Programs menu, there was only Acrobat. the Services was just a program you can't open, but doing stuff in the background.

the weird thing is, the sign in hasn't worked (or at least user did not have to sign in for awhile) and when they tried recently to sign in with everything correct it won't let them sign in. so it's in a situation where it isn't signed in, but it's not signed out. I'm guessing some kind of bug it's trying to auto sign in, but the account doesn't exist anymore so it can't and user can't make it "forget".
