  • How does this compare to the $10 one I got on Amazon a few weeks back?

    • Hows the pressure with that? I had one similar and with new batteries it was so painful.

      • +1

I've never owned one before to compare but it seems pretty powerful to me.

        • Too powerful ? Is it painful?

          • @Arnor: No it doesn't hurt but I imagine if you have sensitive teeth/gums it would. I first used cold water and it wasn't the most pleasant experience but now using warm water and it's fine.

@Arnor: It's surprisingly powerful (the $10 one that is). I use it on the most powerful setting and if it was any more powerful it would be painful.

I have used the older version of the Waterpik corded (blue and white) and the Anjou cordless posted awhile back https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/Anjou%20Dental%20Fl…

Both are great, with the Waterpik lasting 2 years or so before breaking (a lot of noise but no water pumped) and the Anjou still going strong after 3-4 years.

Out of both, prefer the Anjou for the portability (generally one tank is enough) and have had no plastic catches or bits break or depletion of the battery. The three speed/pressure settings are good too - on maximum setting you can use it to clean the bathroom grout though be careful of chipping.

The best thing is the price difference and portability - the Waterpik takes a bit of real estate and in a small bathroom just does not look good or convenient and I think you pay a little for the branding.

  • For 100 bucks this is solid. I got a 2 pack a few years ago and both still work

    • that seems to be the regular sales price, just looks a bit bulky to fit in the bathroom cabinet

It is the biggest item on the vanity, yes. Its probably the size of 2 Listerine bottles put together.

        • Yeah does look pretty big, can you store it with the tip / brush off?

          Height (with Tip/Brush) : 9.90 Inches ( 25.15 cm )
          Max Width (Base) : 5.60 Inches ( 14.22 cm )
          Max Depth (Base) : 5.30 Inches ( 13.46 cm )

How would you compare usage-wise between the ultra and the cordless unit?

          • +2

@actinium227: I remove the tip/brush after every use. The Ultra is my daily driver while the cordless unit has only been used on an overseas trip. However, it is quite gutless compared to the Ultra and the water tank is quite small.

    caution

my dentist told me to stop using this, or use it less frequently. this blast away your gums over time. so your gums cover less of your teeth as it recedes.

dont use high pressure, but then you have to use high pressure if the food isn't coming out. lose/lose situation.

i use to love it, works great, but long term gum health is an issue.

    ymmv

guess that's the same with toothbrushes, you need to be firm but not too firm.. never knew i was brushing my teeth wrong until i went to the orthodontist

    • Use it less frequently, when they recommend to floss daily?
Use it on a lower setting, agree. If you have food stuck in there, then use it only in that area and then go back to normal once it's out.
If anything, if used properly, this improves gum health and breath.
Had my waterpik for a year now, no more threads and picks for me. I use it every other day. The Laddas last a long time and low pressure is enough to get all the bits out that brushing doesn't.

Now excuse me while I call my dentist for my annual check.

I asked a dentist about this recently and she said pretty much don't bother unless you have a kid with braces. She reckons is not nearly as effective as flossing.

  • Up Vote for product design. Looks like Star Wars Storm trooper helmet !!!

  • I am using this and it works well.

I find cordless one little bulky to carry while travelling.

Old school dentist was pleasantly surprised after I used it (I have the older mains powered one)
You’ll still need to floss from time to time with floss string.
Takes you a little while to get used to it (dribbling the stuff out that you’re used to keeping in your mouth)
But crazy how much gunk can come out.

You also build the pressure over time (every few weeks)
I’m on max setting now (have been for a year or so) and use morning and night.

Cheaper than a dentist visit, so can definitely recommend even if it’s just preventative in nature.
I add diluted listerine to it from time to time as well.

Suggest getting the mains one, the lithium will never have the same level of power and has a smaller water tank - I’ll use 2x full water tanks (1x top and 1x bottom teeth) every time morning and night. So larger water tank is helpful (your gums adapt quickly)
(Also suggest getting piksters and using this afterwards from time to time)
    Hope these tips help

  • What’s the advantage of these compared to just usual floss?

    • With food lodged in there, it is great. also great when i had gap between my molar and wisdom teeth that was hard to reach and clean out with floss.

you are fine with just floss. also great with mixing water and a little bit of listerine and shooting between teeth. really gets in there and kills the germs..
