Please use LEGACY as shown in the post.

      • Ah, thanks. I did not realise it was case sensitive. Typed "Legacy" instead.

        • I didn't either. Will update info.

  • Although the post says it is only for those who received the email. I didn't receive one and I could order.

  • Isn't it now controlled by that rich mining fella?

    • Yeah same dude that owns RM Williams.

  • +1

Very much is a case with these of buy once, buy for life. We have some in my family that have been worn for 50+ years between generations.

    • Any idea if the new ones have the same quality as the old ones? Also, are they "One size fits all" or they come in different sizes? Tia

      • No they have a range of sizes, you need to know yours.

      • No sorry, can't comment RE: quality. But as far as I know they still use the same templates, same material, and same factory so I'd hope it's still just as good!

I have an Akubra that I bought three years ago, worn daily for 8 months of the year and a couple of times a week in the remaining months. People ask frequently me if it’s new - it could easily be mistaken for coming straight out of a box. In my opinion, the quality is still absolutely top tier and still fits the ‘buy it for life’ category.

        • Cheers. Wished I checked OzB early today to read your comment as I could have visited the store here in Adelaide CBD and try them on. This deal expires today and they close at 5pm, so looks like I missed out on this deal. Will probably check them out in store when I get a chance just in case a deal like this deal is posted again.

They do last a long time, but sweat wrecks them fairly fast.

    • Have had mine for three years and it's developing a hole in the peak.

    Most OzBargain post ever!

    • -1

Yep. We love mining billionaires and they deserve our hard earned cash!

  • Where's a good place to try these on in person? Any shops in Sydney?

      • How about for Melbourne?

  • +2

Dang! I missed out on my size. Guess I saved money this time.

  • Great deal.. sadly the sizes dropping like flies..

  • Had an akubra and as cool as they look and feel, they get damn hot. I'm all about the straw (or similar fibre) hats now. Can get very nice ones

I've just ordered 2 Cattleman hats - for me and my wife. We've recently arrived from Europe for couple of months and we felt in love in Australia and Ozzies' style of life. Therefore, we'll bring them to Europe and proudly wear this part of your culture ;) I only hope we won't regret the size we've chosen. I'll be appreciate for any advices how to take care for the hats so they'll keep the shape and good condition for the years.

I've still got the Akubra Squatter I wore surveying in the Great Sandy Desert for 5 years in the 80's! A bit bedraggled and holes from the sweat, but relatively intact! :)

      • -1

I've got an old cotton cap I've worn for over 10 years

        • +2

Ha! That would have caught fire out there!

Spent $185 my Saturday night didn’t see coming. Thanks OP.

  • +1

Thanks OP, debates a hat but walked a way with two belts.

    • Are the belts as good as their hats? I'm thinking about buying a belt with a multitool or knife pouch, but I don't know if it will be easy to move it through the trouser belt

      • +1

To answer this I bought two belts and they're pretty terrible.

The leather is plasticy the stitching is sharp and rough and it's sewn over the buckle so if it's a bit too long you can't trim it down like most good quality belts

At full price I would have returned them.

    • +12

Or just realise it is a good quality hat, that is full brimmed and protects your hat and face quite well. Something quite important under the Aussie Sky.

      • -3

All things that can be achieved with a hat a fraction of the price.

        • +5

Please show me other examples of hats that are as hard wearing as rabbit pelt, Aussie made, in that price bracket.

    • +10

The audacity of people wearing something they like and supporting Australian manufacturing. /s

If they are at the same camp sites as you what makes them glampers and you a rugged dinky di Aussie camper?

    • +1

What high school do you go to that you can see a camp site from it? Or does this experience happen during school holidays?

  • +1

I won't be wrangling cattle anytime soon. So, which one of these would be suitable for just working around the yard?

    • +2

Cattleman or Traveller both ideal for that

  • +1

Which one does Bob Katter wear?

    • Bob Katter threatened to boycott Akubra around a decade ago because they were going to stop using Australian rabbit pelts.

I believe that his hat is an Akubra Arena, but for some reason I seem to recall that someone told me or I read that he has his hats custom made now. I can’t find any info on that so I may be mis-remembering.

  • dang it, the colour i want is only 30% off, but the ugly green one is 50% off. :(

    i'll wait for 50% off

  • Do you reckon you could order the wrong size and swap in an RM store?

    • now that its owned by the same company, i don't see why not. ymmv

      • +2

Bit of a gamble. The Legacy sale listings explicitly say no change of mind or exchanges. Only accept returns if it has faults.

I wouldn’t risk it short of having spoken to your local RM Williams store today to confirm they’d do it.

Archive items are final sale and are not eligible for return, exchange, or store credit. Faulty policy will still apply

Same parent company isn’t necessarily a sign they’ll do exchanges between stores either, although maybe someone can comment on what the case is here.

  • Doesn't work. Code expired?

  • +3

It took everything in me not to jump on this. I've wanted an Akubra forever but I couldn't commit $160 to ordering a hat I'd never tried on. Great post though!!

    • Yeah if they’d had my size in the Cattleman Fawn I’d be all over it.

Was a few other colour options that were close to getting too. Those were however 30% off and at that point I figured I should go to a store somewhere and make sure I have the exact sizing down.

Signed up to their newsletter for a future sale, but I take it these are very rare?
