Anyone know where I can get a desktop computer for free? It does not have to be working. Just want to spend some time with kids on building a PC together.
Just need, Motherboard, CPU and RAM.

Just ask on Facebook or keep an eye on Gumtree.
I had a few towers recently I put to E-Waste.
Waste transfer station or e-waste drop off centre (ask your local govt where they are in your area) . Who knows maybe OW has them?
If you go on OCAU forums there is a trade / sell section that people often offload old / unwanted PC parts for very cheap (sometimes free if they are extremely old parts).
The downside is you need to be a member for 90 days before you can access the forum.
Gumtree and Reddit are alternatives. The risk is fairly low if all you're looking for is junk parts for the PC building experience.
For proper working PC's buy new for less hassles or from a refurbisher, of which there are many posted on Ozbargain like ACT computer traders.

not trying to be facetious, but wouldn't friends and family be the obvious places to look? Like, you know, it comes up in conversation:
friend/ family: how you been op?
op: great!
friend/ family: what have you been up to?
op: oh just getting into hobbies, i want to start building a pc with my kids but i cant seem to get my hands on an old cheap pc
fiend/ family: oh i have heaps in the garage. Why don't you come over and help yourself to one?!
op: oh that would be great!!!just be sure to not end the conversation there and walk away, it might get awkward.
I tried, hence I am asking online.
Many friends and family do not have old desktop lying around. They discard immediately once they have a replacement. They are not from IT so wont normally leave spare parts lying around.
Go to places like the good guys. I've seen whole computers chucked into the ewaste bin there
Facebook marketplace. Alternatively, kerbside collections: they are hot stuff, always disappeared quick when I put mine out.
