Does this handle work with the older Fusion 5 blades? Been using my handle for eons and just been buying the blades of which I still have a few left, but handle if getting all sticky and worn out..

  • Does anyone know what these are like? Dad is driving me crazy wanting me to find him a decent gillette shaver - mach 3, fushion, labs which is better?

    • Fusion probably best.

Does anyone know what these are like?

They are amazing! Just care for the blade, clean it properly with hot water each time after use and a single blade last me well over 2 months on almost daily use.

      • If i got this for $15.30 what would be a good shaving cream to go with this? Noticed the labs cream is $6.30 with subscribe and save

        • what would be a good shaving cream to go with this?

There are plenty of choices but Schick Hydro Gel Sensitive is my go to as it gives me amazing result!

    • The Mach3 only has three blades compared to the 5 (6 if you could the reverse blade the Fusion and Labs have, they state it as a precision trimmer) and has a slightly smaller head.
Having used a Mach3 Turbo for years, going to the Labs seemed a little more bulky but you get used to it fast and having 5 blades seemed a little smoother on the shave but could also be the bias of used blades to new ones. I found the Mach3 as a very good travel blade as both the handle and head were smaller.
As for the Labs exfoliating bar, can't say feel much from it, guess it kinda stretches out the skin before the blades but the Mach3 has its own little rubber bar like the Fusion just before the blades.

I'd say the Labs makes a nicer gift though c:

    • Schick > Gillette.

Price goes to $22.49 when I try to checkout. Anyone else having that happening?

    • Yes also showing as $22.49 for me too weird

      • +1

Managed to buy it for $15.30 with receipt emailed, but I cannot view the order details nor view the subscribe and save details

      • It's a postcode thing. $15.30 if I use a parcel locker in town, $22.49 to home address.

I'll say it any time terrible disposable razors come up…

JUST BUY A SAFETY RAZOR!!! Double sided safety razor, a sample pack of blades (everyone's skin is different and some will do better with different blades), and go for a shaving brush and shave soap if you're feeling fancy (shaving cream in a can is garbage).

I bought my razor and blade pack ($~40), then worked out which blades I liked and purchased a pack of 100 blades for about $12. This was nearly 8 years ago and I'm almost out of blades now…. literally paid pennies to shave over much of the past decade.

    • Any recommendation please? Thank you

Honestly it's been a LONG time since I did the research, but there's HEAPS of knowledge on https://www.reddit.com/r/wicked_edge/

      • https://www.amazon.com.au/Merkur-Classic-Straight-Safety-Raz… is a reliable brand and comes with some razors. I just use shaving cream as normal, no longer bother with brush and traditional soap.

Do get a good after shave like (imo the goat) https://www.amazon.com.au/Eucalyptus-Menthol-Aftershave-Loti…

      • A cheap way to start or trial is with the King C Gillette which is regularly on sale around the $15 mark, which includes 5 blades.

I started with the 3 pass shave and was flying through my shaving foam tubes, so then I got a cheap brush (Jack The Barber at woolies - got on sale for around $8) and the Proraso Shaving Soap which is around $12 to $15, but lasts forever (quick calc - 6 months = 26 weeks x 2 shaves a week x 3 passes = approx 150 shaves).

Then as stated, the blades can be got for $12 for 100 from Amazon (Wilkinson Sword), but I do intend to get a sampler pack to see if any blades are better than what I got.

    • Where did you get the 100 blade sampler from?

      • +1

Many brands sell blades, the one I used is from Astra. They are all similar priced so just pick whatever has good listing reviews.

        • +1

Thanks. I was curious about the 100 blades for $12 more than anything as the packs I were looking at were more expensive. Makes sense now that they were astra.

      • Oh sorry I bought a pack with about 5 or 7 packs of 5 blades, and then once I worked out that I liked the Astra blades, I just bought a 100 pack.

Beard and Blade do a sample pack, but you can get sample packs off Ebay etc as well.

Yes people! Stop throwing your money at these modern razors, it is worth learning how to use a safety razor as the blades cost literal pennies. I bought 50 blades 6 years ago and still have so many left. You don't have to pick up the "full gear" to do wet shaving. I usually just use shaving cream and aftershave, that's all, no fancy brushes or other equipment. Ignore the snobs that say you can't use canned shaving cream.

      • +1

Yea even just changing razors is well worth your while. Personally I don't like canned shaving cream, but lots of people do like it.

I hear you and I tried, tried and tried some more and always cut myself no matter what, not to mention it takes considerably longer.

Definitely though, if it works for the person issue free then go for it, I loved the process too, almost relaxing.

Unfortunately, my growth is coarse and grows in so many different directions.

With disposable blades I can shave in any direction, eyes closed and I'm not getting cut.

I go for the Coles Rapid 5, works out at $1.62 each.

      • +1

Yea fair enough, it's probably not for everyone. But I think most people could do equally well, if not better, for a fraction of the cost.

  • +1

That’s a cost of $3.825 per blade - not bad specially including the handle

considering Woolworths sells 8 pack for $6.75 per blade.

A value refill pack from shaver shop would be my pick at $3.68 for 16 blades

    • Cheers for the shaver shop steer. Also found some oral-b brushes so a bunch of boring things sorted for the next year!

I know we all cancel after using S&S, but why would anybody want to Subscribe to razor blade refills with an handle? Maybe for those who keep losing the handles?

  • Still using my Gillette 5 blade from 10 years ago. Your skin is leather I just strop the blade on my arm or stomach in the shower to sharpen, only takes a minute.

  • Thanks, bought 5.

Schick Hydro 5 FTW over anything Gillette in my sensitive skin's humble opinion…

    • +2

I am still going through my stock of Hydro 5 blades from the OzBargain megadeal from a few years ago!

  • Thanks. Bought it for the free cap.

BIC single blade disposable for the win. I'm serious.

I'm 50 and I've done everything from 5-blade cartridges to safety razors to Braun Series 7 electric.

With a single blade disposable you get unrivalled value for money, perfect for sensitive skin as it only has one blade, doesn't cut you to pieces like a safety razor can (if you're not careful), and gives you a result only bettered by multi-bladed cartridges that scrape your skin very hard.

Only one downside is they're plastic and bad for the environment.
