First post in a couple of years.
Bunnings Pinnacle 5 Shelf Shelving Units on sale

1830 x 1200 x 410 $88.80
1830 x 1200 x 540 $109

Some people have criticized these in the past because they suffer gradual deterioration of MDF. I just bought 2 on click & collect. Enjoy.

If you’re going to go for these instead of the all metal rack storage units, pay the extra for the 540mm deep shelving. It’s a game changer.

And as the OP warns, if you’re placing them in an area with any exposure to moisture, paint them to protect against mould and deterioration.

    • +3

I only have a single garage, I went for the shallower ones because I didn't want them sticking out too far. But yeah seems like a great price for the 540mm if you have the space.

      • +2

I’ve got 410’s, 540’s and 600’s like these https://ebay.us/m/EdBwYh If you have a location nearby and can pick them up plus buy during the frequent EBay % off sales which they usually participate in, they can be had for very similar prices to these units.

If you can fit them, the additional usage the deeper shelves provide is uncanny, and the metal never warps or gets mould.

        • +3

Yes I have the same ones, these can be found in your local area, just search "metal shelving" on facebook marketplace or can recommend https://www.skyteckonline.com.au they have local warehouses in WA / QLD etc.

I put one in a pretty dry room and mould set in pretty quick, it was easy to address but a lot quicker than I thought. Price decent though.

      • +8

Likewise. A quick paint and spray with vinegar is a very worthwhile investment.

        • +4

          Vinegar spray, good tip.

        • What paint do you reckon? Acrylic or latex spray paint (that I already have)? Or other?

          • @WingedNike: Water proof house paint

          • +1

@WingedNike: I clean them up with Selleys Exit Mould and painted with an exterior grade enamel based gloss paint, perfect.

            • +4

@ScottTheFalcon: As an ex pro painter, a gloss enamel, preferably an oil based gloss enamel, then warer based

gloss enamel. But at the end of the day, any washable paint is better than nothing, even

using clear polyutheraine coats (at least 2) will do.

    terrible quality

    • +2

Not industrial quality, but lengths of the straight better than the flimsy Giantz rubbish you see posted on here all too often.

      • I wish this deal would have come a month earlier. I bought Giantz because they were cheaper at the time and I expected them to be similar quality to Pinnacle.
I had pinnacle first, then next place bought Giantz , and yes, will only recommend Giantz if you are desperate to save a buck. Pinnacle is miles better for the price imo.

Now bought heavy duty pinnacle, and quite happe with it.

    • +5

Depends what you use it for? Had mine 8 years to house some tools, boxes, paint tins etc and they are like new.

    • Ive installed 7 sets in two houses, yeah they are pretty shitty but they do work - if its sheliving you do a lot of taking off / putting on I would bother. If you just leave most of the stuff there they should be fine.

      • +1

Yes this is it. If these shelves are in a dry garage just storing boxes and containers, you can pencil them in for 20 years. If you're in Queensland trying to store swimming pool equipment you shouldn't be mucking around with MDF.

        • Indeed, I'm in Queensland and MDF = Mouldy, Dusty, FAIL

  • +1

I'm really happy with these. Use them inside the house in a small storage area.

    • I wouldn't keep bare MDF inside my house long-term.
I used to with these, and it didn't end well.

  • +2

How much were these normally pre-sale?

    • +1

The $109 one is $144 normally according to powerpass

  • +6

Rack-it is much better than pinnacle in terms of quality

    • +12

Something way more expensive is much better? Crazy, if true

      • -7

Do you actually think more expensive always means better quality?
I bet retailers love people like you.

        • +6

Spare me the lecture. It’s childish.
And yes, in many many things—> more expensive means better.
There are many exceptions to this rule, there are discounts, stock clearance, profit margins, expenses etc I could name 100 things why a cheaper product could actually be better. But the rule is different.

    • +1

Um. True for the framing. It's still the same crappy mdf boards.

Source: Us. We have lots of crappy mdf boards on our rackit. Fine as long as you keep it dry. We figure if the mdf gets wet, we'll just gradually build better shelf from whatever other wood we have around.

  • 9mm MDF shelf will sink down in humidity.

And if they get wet, they will bubble or on the edges they will tear apart.

    • +1

If someone breathes a bit too much around them they'll start to go mouldy…

    • +1

Looks all metal vs this MDF shelf unit

    • Yeah after my 5 MDF bunnings shelving units failed, I'd go for the Amazon ones for metal shelves any day - even if more than twice the price

  • +3

That's the depth (not the height)

    • In the end its how you use it

  • +1

My dad fitted out his garage with these. Added reinforcing pop rivets and screwed them to the brick wall. Rock solid. Ended up costing several hundred less than Rack-it

  • Complaints about the MDF sure but I found the whole unit to be very flimsy. Cheap for a reason.

  • +1

Replace 'gradual' with 'rapid' and you have a description of my experience!

  • They are just one tier above the bottom. Not sure about the hype.

  • +1

Is it possible to buy replacement non-mdf shelves for these? Other than just cutting your own ply etc

    • I've also been wondering this. I have these Pinnacle units in the shed and a couple of the MDF shelves have deteriorated. Been wondering about replacing them.

      • +1

Bunnings have off-cuts MDF for $1. Just buy and cut to size.

        • Don't replace with MORE MDF!?
I did laminated melamine - but more expensive

  • Anyone know if theres one like this with glass by any chance on the walls?

  • Got a mesh version of this for slightly more. Decent deal back then but never again.

  • For the shed I'm making my own with shitty timber (pine, non-structural) + plywood.

It's a shame OSB is so expensive here compared to USA (pine lengths too for that matter) but whatever.

  • +1

    Im getting 144$? Anyone else?

    • Yes. $144 from Chatswood, NSW store for the 1830 x 1200 x 540mm

    • Yes, WA.

  • Are these the same quality as the $45 version, just larger?

  • +2

I never understood why bunnings don't treat their wood to be against moisture before selling.

    • +1

simple: so they can sell it again

    • Bunnings don’t manufacture the product and Bunnjbgs will happily sell you the treatment product..

  • Considered these but picked up some brand new all-metal shelves over the weekend. FB Marketplace has a lot of sellers selling the same type of shelves for around $140 that's 2m (L) x 2m (H) x 600mm (D) that are all metal and easy to assemble if you have the space and prefer the metal over the MDF.

  • Planning on chucking my fishing stuff and other bits and pieces, would this be a good get?

    • +2

      paint the wood first,

  • +2

Doesnt come up as discounted for me :(
    Says 144

    • Check again today :)

      • Thank you !

  • Even though this type of shelving appears stable when new it will, over time, loosen up and go tend to start swaying. Brace it up at the back and sides with some hoop iron or the like and if you can secure it to the wall your placing it against. Safety first.

  • Got some cheap all metal ones from Officeworks a few years back. I think just better overall.

  • +2

Price showing up as $144 for the 540mm unit.

    • +1

      Same here.

  • +1

I'm still using those cheapo aluminium $20 shelves Bunnings use to sell.

Still got 4 in good quality in the garage. But they're pretty small for what my wife and I now need to store… probably need a few 5 tier units at 1.8m or taller.

Not a big fan of MDF… anyone got a value for money, all metal option they'd recommend?

    • FB Marketplace seems to have like a persistent paid add for these selves in metal 2x2x0.6

  • Price back up to $144 for the 540mm, did this last week too, so keep checking as might go back down tomorrow, who knows?

  • +1

Paint the MDF with some Cabothane. Makes it more durable and waterproof. Worth bothering if they might get exposed to water and you have time to do it. These have lasted long time for me.

  • I bought the 410 version a few weeks back, to display some statues. Are they in danger lol?

    • No just treat it as the mould pop up

I use mine for 3d print displays

    • paint the MDF

  • Price down to $109 again today for anyone waiting

  • Finishes today. Plenty of stock.
