Heroquest Game System $98 + Delivery ($0 C&C/in-Store) @ EB Games

760

This is an all time low price for this table top, dungeon crawling board game, as far as I can tell.

Great value considering all the miniatures included and the options for expansions and homebrew.

I'd get another set if I didn't already have two!

The Prophecy of Telor quest pack is also on sale for a great price at $36.

Not an all time low but great price, was $85 in Dec at EB (I bought it then).

    • +6

Still unopened in my closet of shame "waiting to be flipped" is the official stance in front of the missus.

      • +7

I wish I could say I wasn't the same. My mancave is a little over run with unopened board games I want to play. My missus says I should sell some since I havent played them but I counter with "well play them with me".

    • +3

Was a lot less for my 1990 version!

      • Not really , the 1990 version was rrp $199.

      • With CPI increases over that time, I actually doubt that.

        • -1

I bought one. The principle price comparison would of been usd vs aud not cpi.

        • It was largely sold out the first Christmas in Melbourne and my parents got it at mindgames for 120 which was an absolute rip. Eat shit mindgames.

    +1 for the YouTube link.

  • +2

Whenever I see this, it reminds me of Hero Academy, a great strategy game that sadly no longer exists.

    • +1

Android/ios suck in terms of retaining classics. GOG and intel systems all the way

    • Played that game endlessly on the original iPad. Was terrific!

  • +5

I maintain that this game would not have the following it does without that 1 video lol

  • +4

One day I will regret not buying this and instead will fork out $250 for it

    • +9

Or, hear me out. You buy it on sale and never play it like the rest of us.

      • +6

        This is the way

      • +1

I already sold my vintage one after it sitting there for 25 years and having never played it with anyone else (but a few forays by myself.. always re rolling to make sure my 10yr old self survived)

        • There is an app that lets you play solo these days, if that appeals to you.

Personally I don't play as much as I'd like, but am quite enjoying painting the miniatures, which I never thought I'd do.

      • As someone who missed out twice now, sometimes I really hate ozbargain.

        • +2

It still says available for home delivery (though guess depends where you are).
I would suggest going to JB and price matching as most stores have stock and they are generally pretty good with price matching depending who you get.

          • @Damannation: Yeah it wont complete for me (despite the available claim) but thank you for the jb tip!!!

          • +2

@Damannation: Mate it worked. Secured it through JB.You're a deadset legend!!!

Thanks so much for the idea.

  • +9

I still have the original from when I was 10 years old.

  • +2

I'm pretty sure my parents got this for me as a kid, still gotta buy for the nostalgia and get the kiddos to play it with me

  • +3

If you're on the edge about buying this, just do it. It'll be a fantastic Christmas present for 'someone' ….
    at a hundy, this is a bargain…….Really!
(still not as cheap as the 35 quid ones back in blighty a couple of years ago mind!)

  • +1

As an avid boardgamer who has played a bunch of modern day boardgames and dungeon crawlers, how does this hold up?

Ive played Cthulhu DMD, Descent 2nd Ed, Gloomhaven (digital), LotR JiME and others.

    • +3

a bit boring and repetitive really as an adult. BUT, where the real fun lies is 'making stuff up' and embelishing the basic rules.
my son loved it when we all made the time to play it.
I've bought all the extensions regardless, we'll play it

    • +2

I think the rules and gameplay is going to be much simpler than some of the games you've listed, but that makes it a really good point of entry for new or younger gamers. Also fun and not too complex to play with mates over a couple of beers…

There are also lots of expansions, and opportunities for home brewing rules and adventures and there are some pretty active online communities (e.g. Ye Olde Inn on Facebook) and YouTube channels (try AshQuest and Always Board Never Boring) if you want to see some reviews and opinions.

      • Thanks for that, it makes sense.
My intro into board gaming and dungeon crawlers was D&D Castle Ravenloft, dnd has a line of dungeon crawlers.
Would you say that this is on that level but with more home brewing opportunity?

        • +1

I think the difficulty is closer to monopoly than d&d. Having said that I really enjoyed it as a 12yo kid.

I just wonder if a lot of the love for it is just nostalgia.

        • +1

After playing GH JOTL, and a ton of digital, I find this boring, the maps are limiting, most fights are around doors and there so little apart from rolling dice. If you have the nostalgia then go for it, but otherwise, go buy $200 Frosthaven (and $70 flip book) and enjoy that instead

    • +4

Hi Hashtrid, as an avid boardgamer also, we got this (for a lot more) and I think my assessment of it is that its broken. I played the DM and I had absolutely no tools at my disposal to stop everyone just crowding outside a door so the monsters couldn't reach most of the party and just jabbing away through the doorway. And the "traps" mechanic doesn't work because there is no time mechanic, so you can just search for traps anywhere with no actual penalty. Gloomhaven works because you run out of cards so have to move super fast and not waste a move.

      • +3

Ah, but this is where you can play Zargon as you choose, bringing in homebrew ideas to spice it up…

Heroes crowding around a doorway? Well here comes an orc patrol wondering what the noise is all about!

Players taking too long in every room? Start a countdown using a d6 for every turn that there are no monsters in the board. When it reaches one, unleash the abominations!

The rules as written are definitely simple and can be exploited by the players, but there is nothing stopping you from adding to, or adapting them to suit.

        • +1

haha I like it Lambchop. I sort of wanted to do that, but I was playing with my brother and cousin who DID NOT let me deviant from the rules as written. At one point I said, ok, the goblins all have crossbows and can hit from a distance (this kind of thing) and they weren't having it.
$100 still a good price though

          • +1

@carlscott1982: Don't let those puny heroes push you around @carlscott1982, for you are the mighty Zargon! :)

I guarantee the other players will also have added fun if things are more risky, or there is an element of urgency.

          • @carlscott1982: Jaws of the Lion is a better buy for much less than $98.

Sure you get cardboard standees instead of miniatures, but there is so much more strategy and tactics. But it also differs as there is no GM to beat, you are all the adventurers.

  • +2

I think I bought mine from Grace Bros… probably first time I got a retail therapy buzz from a 'large' purchase.

  • +1

JB and Amazon have it "on sale" for $167. Just when I've all but given up on EB they go and do something awesome.

    • +1

EB also have Prophecy of Telor at the lowest price I've seen it. Apparently not the best of the expansions, but pretty good at that price, I reckon.

  • I had this as a kid and have fond memories of playing it with friends.

Will probably keep it in my memories than buy it again and realise that it hasn't aged well.

  • +2

I have fond memories of this. Grabbed it as a pre Warhammer Cursed City intro for the 4 and 8yo who want to play cursed city and Blackstone fortress with their older brother and his friends.

  • +2

I have nobody to play with but always want to buy it….must resist…..

    • +1

Would it help if I told you there is an official app that you can use in place of Zargon, so you can solo play as the heroes? :)

      • Woot. Is the app any good?

        • I haven't used it a lot, but I think it's pretty well made, although there is a small learning curve at the beginning.

You draw on the map where each of you players move to and specify any actions they take, and it will show any furniture or monsters, which you then place in the physical board. It then moves and attacks with the monsters in the app and, depending on your dice roll, you update the app appropriately.

There is also narration at the start of quests and some suitably atmospheric background music that you can toggle on/off if you want.

          • +1

@LambChop: Gotta watch some youtube and see if its my tea. Thank you.

  • +2

grabbed it for christmas at $85 plus a few of the quest packs as they were cheap. Like many here, its now sitting on my shelf of shame, along with many minis waiting to be painted.

I grabbed it for the nostalgia of never having it as a kid (i grabbed Space Crusade instead back then), but also wanted. Now i just need to find a friend to play it (of get that app). And get back to painting…

Fun Fact - This is the reason Sierra on-line changed the name of their game "Hero Quest" to "Quest for glory"

    • As a big fan of Sierra back in the day, I knew that!

I think I even had the original release, before they changed the name.

Now you've got me thinking about what a Leisure Suit Larry table top role-playing game would be like. 😂

  • +4

Logged on to EB Games site - there is none in stock within 100km of Brisbane…

Hit up JB Hi-Fi on their online chat and got a price match for two of them plus the expansion at the same price. :-)

    A solid win!

    • +2

      Two sets plus expansion!

Because the only thing better than HeroQuest is more HeroQuest! 😂

    • Lucky you did. EBGames are out of stock now.
