I'm just starting to learn keyboard/piano and came across this deal that looks pretty solid. The Casio CT-S410 is going for $299 (down from RRP $529) - 43% discount.

eBay: Apply coupons SSNOW & BMEOFY25 for $279 delivered.
eBay Plus: Apply coupons BMEOFY25 & TOPTOP for $271.66 delivered.

From what I can tell, this seems like a decent starter keyboard:

AiX Sound Source.
Horizontal Bass Reflex technology boosts the lows and, together with custom speakers, brings powerful and vivid sounds
600 built-in tones
200 built-in rhythms, with Auto Accompaniment featureTouch Response – add intensity and rich expression to each note you play
MIDI Recorder – record your performances and play them back
Pitch Bend Wheel – allow manual variations in pitch, giving your performance more flair and emotion

I think Casio keyboards are generally well-regarded for beginners, and this price seems competitive compared to other retailers.

    piano

I wouldn't recommend this for anyone looking to learn piano, as it doesn't have weighted keys. Otherwise it's a great keyboard.

Can confirm. I have one. Just starting to learn… for the last 2 years… but yes, it feels like a toy rather than an actual instrument.

Don't get me wrong. It has it's place, but if it's not weighted, it's more like a fun thing to bring to parties.

I don't really understand this. It's just an electronic instrument. It's not a toy because the keys aren't fully weighted with the feel of a hammer. There is absolutely no reason why you can't transition from this to a full size grand if you wanted to. Learning on this will make it easier to pick up piano. It will also make it easier to pick up guitar. Or the sousaphone. Just learn any instrument basically.

        • NGL I had to google what a sousaphone was…

          • @astevens: NGL I picked the silliest sounding instrument I could think of…

            • @johnno07: That's fair. It's good enough to learn chord shapes and stuff. And yes, transitioning to a piano will be easier. It's just that, like a guitar, you need to build the strength in your forearms. Just get used to how things sound when you hit the keys at levels of… pressure? Is that the term?

Anyway, it's a nice little thing to have sitting on your lap in front of the PC to learn things. I also have an old Clavinova someone gave me, so I sometimes play on both. I used the term "play" very, very, very, very loosely.

If you can get a weighted one for cheap, even better.

But get a stand for it too. More comfortable than having it sit on your lap.

I would go 2nd hand at this price. Plenty of decent weighted ones sloshing around on marketplace
