Only 3x3? Is this Rubik's square?

    • says unavailable lol o well

  • Thanks OP

While the price is cheap at only $5, the quality is absolutely terrible.

Pick up one of the chinese branded ones for $12-17 for a substantial upgrade in performance.

I would love to buy one like this, do you have any specific links/products? Thanks!

      • Agree - these "official" ones are very clunky to turn.

Something like this is much smoother to turn

one of the latest competitioin cubes

        GAN15

you can previous generation ones for much less

        gan11

I would definitely not recommend any cube over $30, let alone over $100, to a prospective cuber.

        • Imagine comparing $5 cube to a $60 one

        • +2

Honestly the GAN 356M is about $30 and feels so premium. It's good enough for almost anyone. And given the Rubik's one is $25 RRP, that's a fair fight.

      • +2

Agree this is a terrible cube.

Look for Moyu RSM V5 from aliexpress. For about $10 it's a great cube for beginners.

Once you see an 8 year old on YT solve it in 4 seconds you really think "what's the point…"

    • AI robot solved it in 0.7x seconds. so yeh… theres really no point.

    • +2

I know people that still run even though they're never going to match Usain Bolt.

    • Good on him. I'm much older than 8 and I'll never get it without researching

I guess the point might be.. working it out.. or having fun. Rather than comparisons

    • It's a lesson on what NOT to encourage your kid to do in terms of what skills to practice? :P

  • Great thanks!

  • +3

thanks op, but i'm too stupid for these

    • +5

They have a formula you can follow. Anyone can do it

      • -3

does that not defeat the purpose? kinda sounds like using gamefaqs

        • Well you still need to know what to do and when. The same moves won't work for every combination. But eventually you'll learn the appropriate algorithms and can do it on your own.

Even if you follow a tutorial it's still satisfying when you solve it for the first time, and it becomes even more so when you can do it "off by heart".

After that, you can figure out how to do it faster if you really want to.

    • +1

Yeah it has nothing to do with being smart.
Source- look at me, I'm smart and I still can't solve it.

      • You can absolutely solve a rubix cube. Lots of tutorials on YouTube for the "beginner method". Takes time (I would need a good 5-10mins to solve a cube, so I'm no speedcuber), but it can be done.

        • -1

I'm not really down with looking it up tbh. I'd rather solve it myself or not solve it

    • Same here - doesn't matter if it's a speed cube or not, I'll still fail to solve it just as fast!

  • +2

are the coloured squares stickers because that is the only way I have ever solved one of these?

  • +1

i had to learn how to solve it, after my son took an interest in it and every time he mixed it up and couldn't solve it, i helped him solve it…(took me a few night of youtube videos to learn. and after teaching my son for a few weeks. he can do it under 10 seconds. no where near competition level speed, but he he is working on it. he is 8

    • Imagine if kids put the same effort in doing homework

      • Maybe they should assign Rubik’s cube as homework

      • The kids that can solve a cube well generally also put the effort in for schoolwork. There's a big crossover in mindset (and especially a correlation with Maths ability)

        • +1

          it's just memorisation tbh

          • @Hydralyte: Just like homework

          • @Hydralyte: I'd say that's a big part, but there's also some spatial awareness and logic going on. Not 100% rote learning.

  • Missed it, damn

  • I ordered two Rubik's cubes and received a msg from Amazon last night saying they have limited this to one per account. My order has now changed to one and preparing for shipment. Anyone else experience this?
