Solar Quote for Victoria

Hello Bargain Gurus,

I'm currently in the market for solar and have received a few quotes for the following setup:

30 × 440W Jinko Tiger Neo All Black (N-Type, JKM440N-54HL4)

Sungrow 10 kW 3-phase hybrid inverter – SH10RT

Sungrow 25 kWh battery – SBH250

So far, the quotes I’ve received range from $18,000 to $27,000 (after all applicable rebates, including the battery rebate).

As any savvy bargain hunter would, I’m here to ask:
Are these quotes reasonable? Is anyone can share similar experience or should I keep shopping around?

All quotes received are for same system above. which is very concerning because the price difference is huge between lowest and highest cost.

Thanks

    $27000

The break even on that for our household would be about 14 years. That's bonkers.

    • -1

      would be about 14 years.

Is that taking into account all the maintenace costs and replacing the battery after it dies?

      • +2

Nope. If the battery fails at 14 years or the panels get damaged in a hail storm then the cycle continues.

  • Correct, assuming nothing breaks it will be around 7 to 8 years for me to break even on lowest cost as i am using EV charging and referegrated cooling.

  • The most important factor then is the installer. There is no good getting a cheap quote on quality items only to it be butchered on install, you will regret that, thats where I would be putting my research time into.

    • Thanks, i will consider this as well. so far all the quotes received from reputable solar companies and their reviews are very good including installations and cleanup afterwards.

Also what do reviews say about communication both before and after installation.

Have any of the companies come out to see your property and discuss where you want to place your inverter and battery? How much time have the companies actually invested in you so far?

Search the company names on places like whirlpool and reddit as well. And there’s also a Facebook group called Solar Q&A Aus/NZ that you can search the company names, and also the products you’ve been quoted to see what prices others have been quoted. Or even just share your quotes there.

        • Thank you, true, only 2 people actually came to visit and provided quote. Sure i will look for these forums ansmd get some insight.
          Much appreciate your input.
          Cheers

          • @bjasani: We immediately canned any company if they didn’t offer to visit and just sent over a desktop quote.

Some offered to visit and still sent over the quotes, but then revised it once they came. Realised they could get more panels in.

            • @jjjaar: A good resource i had found was solarquotes.com.au

Sounds like you will never break even with these prices?

    Or will you?

Caclculate your ROI. IF it's within 5 years it's good, 5-10, it's ok, beyond 10, look elsewhere.

    • correct thank you. Currently ROI is around 10 years

  • Just for comparison, there was recently a solar and battery deal posted on here for a 10kwh solar system with Canadian solar panels and a 19.2kwh goodwe battery for around $11,000 (after rebates). I know they are less quality options but might be a helpful reference point.

    • Thanks, yes it helps

  • What is the rationale for installing solar if you're not even going to see any savings for the next 10 or 15 years? This all assumes you even stay at that property and life circumstances don't change. I don't see the incentive for any of this…

    • that's very true.

Duuuuude, My cousin intalled 15kw of solar in 2019. He never paid any bills and now made the 11k back. Pure profit at around 1k (cold hard cash per year) AND no electricity bills despite being very careless with electricity and heating/cooling. Solar make sense if your ROI is reasonable.

With batteries, given their finite life, you need faster ROI.

I recently got a $1.5 Million loan from the Victorian Liberal Party. I used the $1.5M to buy a nuclear power plant from Peter Dutton. Producing plenty of power. No need for a battery. I export my excess power to the free Electric BBQ at my local park.

    • All because of former and current Vic and Fed lib leaders Dan and Jacinta, and Bill and Albo, nothing else. Also because of them russian - ukranian; iran - israel wars, Vic is in sought and Qld in north, Tassie detached from the mainland, WA and NT too far away from melb, winter is cold, wellington beef with mushroom so and so fart etc etc etc!

I've finally decided on a 13.2kW Trina solar panel system, paired with a Sigenergy 15kW inverter and a 32kWh battery, all for $18,500. Hopefully, this turns out to be a smart choice—otherwise, I might have to give up my OzBargain badge… lol

    • Have heard that you can sometimes make some additional profit through setting up as a VPP (e.g. through Amber). Let us know how you go!

      • Yep sure, i will update on how it goes

  • Sorry to hijack the thread but I am also in the market for solar. I received a quote for new 10kwh Canadian Solar + Goodwe 10kwh hybrid inverter + 19.2kwh Goodwe battery for $9000 (after all the rebates and include Solar VIC $1400 loan). According to AI, the ROI is about 4-5 years for us.

I can add another 3.2kwh battery module for $550 each. Or even add a second 19.2kwh goodwe battery for $2000 extra.

Wondering if the additional capacity is worth it for our family (we are only a couple but looking to have 2 kids in the next 1-3 years). We'll also install split system for heating and maybe get an EV or 2 in the near future as well.

    • No worries, if you are deciding to buy an EV plus everything running on electicity then sure go for the largest battery you can afford because you can claim this rebate only once. keep in mind your inverter size as well. Go for bigger inverter as well to maximise the output. After much reading i decided to go on larger inverter and large battery. At the moment my ROI will be around 8-10 years which is norm for larger system.
