Which SIM/Plan Should I Get for My Android Headunit?

I recently purchased a generic FYT7870 headunit, it supports 4G/"4G+", I have not yet tested supported bands (should I?).

For my phone I am currently on month-month boost mobile, but I doubt the headunit will need many GBs of data.

Speed dosen't really matter as it's mostly for music and live traffic.

I've had a look and seen that ALDI has a data only for $89, is ALDI Mobile reliable?

any help would be much appreaciated!

  • test before you commit and woud it be feasible to tether?

  • What does the 4G Connectivity actually do? What makes it different to using Android Auto / Car Play connectivity?

I did a quick google but nothing said specifically what it did.

It runs android and alll android apps without the requirement of a phone for Android Auto/ CarPlay.
So say I have Waze installed, it would be able to have live traffic updates.

      • Ah okay, very interesting. I like it.

I would look at Aldi Mobile as they use Telstra's network. I think first as well, you need to work out how much data it is going to use and then get bang for buck. Could try a Amaysim Card and then see how much data it uses in 30 days before doing something longer term.

I've got an Amaysim 365 PAYG plan for my cars GPS tracker, its on the Optus Network and it used about 4MB a month, so $10 for a year is great. But I suspect your headunit could use more, especially if you stream music etc.

I use my phone with Apple Car Play. I use Wase and Spotify in the car. Pretty much every day, and I use under 20GB a month. Depends on your usage, but that is a rought guideline on what you might need to look at.

Amaysim have 30GB for $25 a month (28 days). That might be an option, I haven't looked around for cheaper options.

  • Does it connect via wifi? If so you can just hotspot through your phone and not have a separate sim to save money.

Yes, it's pretty much an Android Tablet with extra pinouts for RCA/USB.
However i'd like to not use my hotspot as it heats up the phone and burns through battery.

    • also, it's connected to my OBD-II via wifi. so i can't use both at once

For low data a travel esim might be cheapest

You can get a esim to physical sim adapter like esim.me or 5ber

Eskimo travel has 10GB 2 years expiry for $18USD
    ThreeHK has 365 day pass 30gb + 5gb social for ~$53
    Ezsim has 128kbp throttling
Roamless has payg and uses both Optus and Telstra
(I've used they all in Oz)

Just depends on how much data you use and what networks work best where you drive. You can compare plans on esimdb and look out of intro/referral codes. Note there can be issues because data routes through another country so best to test.
