My favourite non-ceremonial, affordable yet quality Matcha is on sale. I like to stock up when its at this price.

Ito En, unlike some of the cheaper/culinary variations on Amazon is not bitter. Its fragrant, tastes smoother and has the typical antioxidant levels that are magnitudes higher than a standard cup of green tea.

Matcha, whilst containing caffeine, contains a compound that negates its jittery and nervous side-effects.

    Is $20.65 for 56 grams a bargain?
    You cannot be serious!

    • Certainly not cheap, normally $28.71

Roughly half of a teaspoon per cup is sufficient.

FYI, this is the CCC price history:

(Yep, I'm no expert, someone enlighten me) I'd question if this matcha is worth $/g, 4 x this supposed ceremonial grade 1kg bulk bag. Or 100g for $16.99 delivered

I've enjoyed having a big ol' kilo of the green stuff to dump in my mug, mix 'er up with a teaspoon, all ceremonial like, ya know… I guess it depends on personal standards and expectations. Quantity over quality maybe?

      • Do you portion the bag and freeze most of it or?

      • +3

Ceremonial grade match don't usually come in a 1kg bag, red flag already.
You can usually tell the quality of Matcha by eye by Just looking at the colour of the powder if its Shrek/swap green usual indicator of poor quality matcha.
Also Matcha has a short shelf life so buying a 1kg bag would spoil quick.(Shelf life of about 3-5months) If stored in the freezer unopened. Once opened i usually like to finish my tin within 3 months and stored in the fridge.

Being an Ozbarginer, One thing i wont cheap out on is the quality of matcha. Lower grade will have less antioxidants and Nutrional benefits.

Thanks, I was legitimately interested to learn. Sounds like good knowledge.
I go through these bags faster than 3 months (yeah, it's oxidising the moment the bag is opened). There's definitely some L-Theanine and Caffeine keeping me productive.
When my 'tea ceremony' is a dirty old mug on my workbench and the alternative is instant coffee, it's not such a bad purchase.
Likely not a fair comparison to Ito En though.

Given the color of the matcha, I highly doubt this is ceremonial grade; at best, it might be daily grade, though even that is questionable. The price of ceremonial grade matcha has skyrocketed due to its trendiness, and it's typically picked at the first harvest, meaning it doesn't last very long. Additionally, the label looks homemade, which raises doubts about the origins of this matcha. However, if you're not too concerned about the grade, this is still a good price for real matcha.

        • Sounds about right, you get what you pay for. Sure beats instant coffee.

@alxjpow: I mean this label couldn't even get their website name right on the label and Japan has strict guidelines of how companies design their product labels so….

    • meh you can get better macha for that price. especially if you are on keto.

Bleary-eyed, I truly thought it read "Japanese Marching Powder" for a moment.

C grade green tea. The matcha powder used is "culinary grade" so they stick it in tea cakes and smoothies and definitely not for any self respecting tea slurper.

Expensive. I bought a bag (560g) of Organic Matcha from Ito En from Costco USA on a trip a few months ago. Only cost about $15 USD

Don't get bogged down by "ceremonial" moniker.

    • would love to know why this isn't the one to buy. Do people say bad things about it, i see people saying 'real matcha,' can it be construed as fake in some ways? Looking to give making it at home a try and this would make it affordable. Just need the equipment if anyone has recommendations.

  • I started drinking matcha after listening to one of the episodes about cancer prevention on diary of a CEO podcast.
